The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: Robots & Mechas.
Deadline - 10:00PM GMT 13th January 2012.
Description: A robot is a mechanical or virtual intelligent agent that can perform tasks automatically or with guidance, typically by remote control. In practice a robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by computer and electronic programming. Robots can be autonomous, semi-autonomous or remotely controlled. Robots range from humanoids such as ASIMO and TOPIO to Nano robots, Swarm robots, Industrial robots, military robots, mobile and servicing robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense that it has intent or agency of its own. The branch of technology that deals with robots is robotics. Mechas appear in anime, science fiction, and other genres involving fantastic or futuristic elements. Mechas are generally, though not necessarily, bipedal and are best described as a mix between a tank and a robot. Some mechs have arms, hands, and fingers capable of grasping objects. A mecha that approximates the shape of a human body may allow the use of martial arts movements and swordsmanship, ceremonial acts of honor, saluting, and other human mannerisms. Discombulated from powersuits, Mechas are usually seated machines armed with a cockpit, while powersuits are "worn" as exosceletons powering the man inside. Androids cannot be called mechas, as they are not piloted. So this is your chance to model your own take on a Robot or a Mecha, and as ever the choice is all yours so get modelling :)

Modelling Time: 90 Mins.

Prizes:

1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge.
2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge.
Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges

Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck!

My Starter

Went for something like a fat Ironman style here, i've modelled Ironman before and always liked the style of the head and the chest area, so knew where to start when modelling and gave him a centered wheel and totally different arms, modelled initally half with a symmetry null then made them editable and carried on from there.

Cheers matey i'm glad you liked it, left ALOT of details out, might finish it one day :) Looking to try something completely different for the next one, spent way too long building an upper torso earlier today and then realised I had about 20 mins left so abandoned the idea, must go back to the planning stages instead of trying to model straight away without any prep.

Had another go at this, went for a cartoon styled Robot. Thought it looked ok, the lighting on both could be improved but didn't really spend much time on either...... just a bit of fun :)

woot, on a roll here, actually found time again to day to make an entry, got no where near the amount of detail I wanted and had to recycle quite a few parts to meet the deadline.

Here's my entry for this SMC :)

model and materials in 3DS Max 2011, Post Production in Composite, making of the entry poster in PS.

I had plenty of time left to continue modeling the robot considering the 90min we've got, but due to my own spare time i had for this i started right away with the materials and stuff.

The environment are basic primitives with some extrusions and with the greeble modifier on top of that.. (how quick you can make a sci-fi environment with greeble :lame: )
I screwed the material for it but i was lucky to fix it in composite. (see the firery-bomb-like colors in the original render)

Since I didn't had Photoshop installed on my laptop when i was ready in Max I gave Composite a try and i loved it! a little figuring out how to, and I was quite content with the result.
(color curves, blur, glow and some blend&Comps with the render passes)

what a nice little robot. i think you used my concpt that i posted at your wip to model this :D .
and i think it could be legal to compete here - i think you could easily model this in 90min . easy : a cylinder here and there, a box here and there..... and reapet this about thousand times :D .

This is my entry for the SMC#37

Hello! Time to take up my passion for 3D again after over a year and this is a good start. I really enjoyed this and found a really nice workflow which isn't usually the case for me during these kinds of projects. It's amazing what you can do with cylinders and materials

borgfriend: U need to include a wireframe and write the software used and time on the image itself to be eligible to compete it the comp ;)

linfre: Nice work mate, great shader work in the beauty render.

I don't have the time to enter this one but maybe the next one.

Okay, so, this is a little weird. You're probably thinking that I didn't read the topic right, but let me explain. As I started thinking of robots, I was thinking of a story for a short animation that I want to make: A bunch of alien robots, who just happen to look a lot like our electricity towers, decide to invade Earth. Over the last 50 years, they've been strategically placing their robot drones all over the world, preparing for a coordinated attack! So here one stands, awaiting further orders...

(I know it's a lot of pictures, but because the thing was so big, I couldn't fit all the aspects into just 1 or 2 pictures to show the detail that I modelled.)

I had some free time and decided to do this challenge - I know it's already closed but that isn't the point - because I actually had an idea for this one. I just wish I could've finished within the 90mins, heck, I spent more time figuring out how the joints would move and fit in relation to one another than the modeling itself...

Since that was the case, I decided to bring a bit of character to my new friend and created a test animation. I only used pivots tho, mind you. No hint of a rig as that isn't my territory or skill...

I dunno how or if I can embed this video, so here's the link: My Lil' Bot (http://vimeo.com/35826107)

nice one ransomInK. I like the animation to :)
Try to spend lots of time on the concept stage/pre-planning as that will determine the quality of ur final model ;)

That's cool. Nice animation. Hey, don't be afraid of rigging, it's not that hard. You're halfway there already, it looks like!
