I saw the super car thread and thought it would be cool to see peoples aircrafts... havn't seen many around here
anyway heres the plane I've been workin' on for the last 2 days.. ignore the mat/lighting, just wanted to show what I have for a model as of now
Keep the thread going, let me see what crazy stuff you guys got cooked up... and any C&C about what i have modeled so far would be great....
*oh by the way its a "P-38 D Lightning" (the D actually makes a difference)

It shouldn´t be so straight.

ptacnik,
Yeah I'm totally with you on this thread and I'm gonna try to get it started. This first post is a model I was making in conjunction with a B-17 Flying Fortress I had a long post on about two months ago. I did not post about my P-51 Mustang so its new to the forums. ;) Its not finished totally, mostly just the modeling. Still I learned a lot about modeling do this one. What do you guys think?

This is my most favorite helicopter ever! I love this thing. I have tried several times to model it years ago but never got very far. Last week I dove head long into it and I am making great progress. I still have to the the main rotor and various other details. The bulk of the modeling is done and I'm happy with my results. If anyone knows alpt about this helicopter please let me know cause I need some specific help on certain parts as far as reference goes. Let me know what you think or if you need to see other renders. Lets keep this thread going. :D

started this one earlier today... again ignore the tex/mat
the model is almost complete... just need to finish a few touch ups and get the cockpit created...
only took me a day for this one... but these two planes are my fist try at modeling an aircraft.... and modeling the cockpit for this one is gana be a pain i think, if any of you have some techniques for the best way to model cockpits please send them my way...
again C&C are welcome
* this plane is a German F-W 200 C3 condor

Enjoy
Your P38 is coming out nice, just a few tweaking needed esp. the pod ahead the cockpit is straight when it should curve and the outer horizontal stabilizers must be semicircular.
The Condor is nice too. There were civil versions of this a/c, or rather it was a civil a/c adapted to military service. As were all Nazi planes developed before the Spanish civil war, of course.
Here's my splined DC-3, still unfinished. I have to polymodel it - someday:roll:

Some very nice planes. This was something I did a while back and is going to be the first of the futuristic planes.
Nice to see thread like this.:D
I made helicopter also (there are too little of them). It is Bell-212 or UH-1N(millitary designation).
Helix- special greetings for you. I see we have similar helicopters. It is realy hard to find decent references on the net for your model. I have some small pictures of your bell-205 and will try to dig up something useful.
P.S. Decorative barrels by the helicopter on the picture are no mine. I'm sorry but i lost file in which was the name of the modeler.

This is the first plane i ever did...doesnt have much detail at all, but like i said it was my first try and i learned from it.

raf, nice BELL 212. I was making this one for ahile then noticed how different it was from the UH-1D. Not much different mostly different engine wise. My next step after my UH-1D I want to try and make it into a UH-1B varient and put big gun pods on it. Seen any good pics that have gun pods on the 212 or 205?
wOOt 3Dan I love DC-3 Skytrains ;)
Otacon, I like your plane I think it looks great. Is it a F-86 Sabre?
Rick, cool model, I want to see more futuristic, concept planes too.

i bow to the plane creators! :D
the main problem i have when creating aircraft is the wing roots/rudder fuse/ engine cowl to wing...
ie when attaching them to the rest of the plane my mesh comes out real crappy :( the smoothing looks crap as i've tried to make up for crappy out come of the boolean operation.
any idea's?

ps: i still very much a newbie!

Very old. During the time I started and finished a model on the same day. Texturing modelling and scene. Never spent enough time on one part.
These are great machines you boys churned out!
Helix, i love the Mustang too. (so much that i can draw it without a single reference)
I have blueprints for the Twin Mustang and plan to model it one day:roll:
Here's another unfinished one. I HAVE to get back to them...

Got some beautiful aircrafts so far!
Otacan, very well done for your first plane IMO
Helix : I love your mustang! Also : I did some hunting and found your older model (cant remember the name) but I must say its a great model... should most definitely add a screen of it to our collection.
RickStefani : Nice designs, very original, a little creepy, but cool non-the-less :)
BlackWolf : I look forward to seeing what you have to add to the post, and I hope you found the blueprint links usefull
3Dan-3DT : your DC-3 is awesome, and I figured out what you ment by the nose on my P-38 needing a little tweaking. The earlier models of the P-38 were not as rounded as the later models but I defiantly agree 100 % that mine needs some work.
The "D" model is a pretty rare model (only 36 made) and its next to impossible to find reference pics for it, and even when I think I may have found one I realize its a later (and more produced) model like the "J" or "G" But Ill giver her a facelift and post an update for C&C sometime maybe tomorrow.
Thanx to everyone for the comments, and contributions... lets keep this thread going....
THX Blackwolf:D . Your link is absolutely fantastic!
Helix: On that russian site there is zip file with 3000x2000 blueprints of UH-1B,C,D and N. I think that they used modified M-60s for gunpods on early Hueys. Here is the picture of D with M134.

Awesome WWI aircraft. I tried a Sopwith Pup awhile back but never finished it ;(. Honestly with a bit of photoshop tweaking you could actually get a good "painted" effect because you already have kind of a oil painting feel with the color IMO. I've wanted to recreate this painting that has my grandpa's signature on it. Only 500 were ever printed so I think art like this can get pretty valuable if it has some personal touch to it like stories or signatures from poeple in the art. Ofcourse no one is still alive to sign your WWI art ;( Just a thougt if your into making these types of scenes often. Again great scenes.

Mine is not as nice, but I thought I'd join in the fun. I made this about the same time as that American/Chinese spy plane fiasco a while back. The mesh is very low poly (1030 triangles). I was going to use it in a Quake 3 map, but it never when any further than was you see in the pic.

Never really serious started to texture it, so here's a kinda clay render...

29-09-2003, 07:39 AM
Thanks, ptacnik. Those will come in handy.
Here is a topic that might be worth talking about. We all need to put our aircraft somewhere and I want to put mine in the sky. Anyone have any good methods for clouds, sky and ground within a 3D package? I've seen some nice renders with a sky in this thread so just throwing it out there. ;)
otacon
29-09-2003, 08:28 PM
All i did for my scene was get some nice sky images doing a google image search, added some motion blur in ps, then put the image as a background, then you have to try and match the lighting of the background pic, and find a dramatic camera angle, add a tilt, and if your lighting is good enough you'll have a cool looking scene.:D
Good reference for Apache could be model from the scene "Apache-FlyBye" that comes with standard 3Dmax. It is not very high poly (55000 faces) but it has some good low poly details and the shape is right.
Here is the render of it. I exported it out of that scene a year or two ago. Almost forgot that i have it.
It needed some work on textures which also from come with max and added Helfires.

02-10-2003, 12:07 AM
oh what the hell, I might as well post one of mine. This is a model from my early days in 3D when I didn't really know what I was doing and I hadn't discovered polymodeling. This was done in Rhino. It sucks, I know but it was the best I could do at the time.

Be sure to do that, primal. Russian fighter jets are so cool and they totally kick their western counterparts´asses in manouverability and yes even rate of climb, ie the MiG 21 compared to the western fighters in production at that time had a phenomenal rate of climb. The Mig 29 and SU-27 are the only fighters able to perform the "Cobra Maneuvour" flawlessly btw.
I hope more ppl will send in pics of fighter jets :p

Thank you very much
I am very happy to hear that i have been an inspiration to somebody :D
A stearman would be an excelent project.
And, considering how many of them are still around today, you shouldn't have too much trouble with refs.
Also helps to have a friend who owns one ;)
I've also been considering starting a full blown structural model based on an aircraft from the same time period.
Not sure which make yet - kind of depends on what I can find adequate refs for:
P6, brf2b, Bristol Bulldog, Gloster Gladiator ... one of those
should be fun
