The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Just finished up modelling my rubbish bin and will work on a beauty render. I might give the maya toon shader a shot if I have the time ;)

Ok here is my entry :D
I stumbled across the idea while searching on google and decided that the futuristic recycle bin would make a fun and unique model. Here is the original design. (http://media.treehugger.com/assets/images/2011/10/tonymech_binbot.jpg)

For the beauty render I decided to do a simple mentalray toon shader effect. I have never used toon shaders and I do have to admit they are quite fun and I would like to muck about with them on some of my other models lol.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else can create for the challenge :)

Very cool entry astroAJ :)

I've been working hard today, really big headache too as i've been creating a medical illustration animated both of which i've never done before! It's alot of learning in a short period of time, kinda creating and learning how to create at the same time (not good, and not easy).

The project has been postponed at the moment, but here is what i'd got which is part of the animation on page 28 here (http://www.touchbriefings.com/ebooks/A1rmht/intercardio61/resources/index.htm?referrerUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.aol.com%2F 35138-211%2Faol-6%2Fen-gb%2FSuite.aspx), the task was to reproduce the same kind of animation and early signs are that they are more than happy with the results (thank goodness) I cannot show the final vid because it's not completed (and won't be) they just wanted an example of the kind of version I could create, but here's two shots from the project that I can show :)

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk208/classicgamer-3dt/stentguidelinerendertest0300.jpg

It's all shader based, they didn't want anything realistic, although I did do some tests and they looks a bit too real and gory lol.

CG - awesome :) . it remembers of my one project i did for a medical univercitie's covention where i had to do the whole human torso with a slice to its inside with all the bones and guts. how long did it take you to do this whole thing?

this looks really "from a medical commercial like" high end ofc. very nice - can't quite grasp the mesh due to different RL layers of the tissue or did you just unwrap it nicely, but it's clear to the point :)

AstroAJ, that's some awesomely great modelling for the smoothing. I'm trying to learn how to optimize my low poly mesh for smoothing, so thanks for the good example! My entry's coming soon...

honestly this took me from Monday afternoon... maybe 4pm till around 11pm then all day yesterday so aroun 16-18 hours all in..... fairly quick turnaround really. It's been abandoned now, but the whole thing was more about "can you replicate" the medical style and it's looks like yet I can, but I had actually managed to do 80% of the animation, the stent mesh in the upper ventricle was animated using FFD and is hidden until needed and was done by a friend on CGTalk yesterday when I asked for help because I was really struggling, but I managed to do the bottom ventricle animation with the stent grid attatched to roll out and then extend the mesh to fill the artery chamber and then the guideline rolls back out off screen. The upper grid mesh was managed with an FFD animated mesh with a grid & alpha shader, whereas the bottom one is actually modelled from a circular spline, then placed into a cloner. When I get chance i'll show the wires etc, wanted to try and show the animation i'd got but the vid was around 149mb and only just got Final Cut X & Compressor and not sure how to use it yet.

Anyway thanks alot guys :)

It's actually alot simplier than that, the mesh is made up of 3 different mesh which as complete meshes, then I made loop selections for each layer such as skin, veins, fat, and damaged cells and set those selections with selection tags and pointed the tags to individual shader materials..... it probably would have been better to add more decay to the damaged cells if I unwrapped it properly in bodypaint but I was keen to see results quicker than that..... and bodypaint isn't my strongest toolset.

Okay, Here is my entry was a very quick one but used it as a test for MODO's compositing ability, didn't have time to set up the lines etc. for the composite but was very surprised at the result none the less, I'm going to have to make one now with some actual time put aside for camera matching etc..., no Photoshop work on the beauty render at all, just making the collage for the entry.

Garner - Very nicely done there, great modelling too :)

I'm working on the next SMC right now, should be alot more exciting than this one, all I'll give away at the moment is that it's a good detailing challenge :)

there were some cool entries at the end; may do a garbage bin just for the hell of it. i did the mech challenge even tho it already ended cuz the idea was awesome in itself. i'll post some extra stuff (animation) for that forum in a few days. since the challenge was over, i decided to take it further cuz i had the time that day....

i kno i usually do the challenges after the fact, but i still like posting whenever i get the time to do them cuz of work and not getting used to the time zones - in chicago, il, usa at the moment....

hope to see great stuff from you guys for the next challenge
