Welcome to the Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com Threedy Forums . Please post all images & questions in this thread.

So what is this challenge all about?

Each month we will select a title for the Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, model it, and create a final 3D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for threedy forums in the form of final images.

What are we looking for?

Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Stylized Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Stylized Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylized/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the requirements?

The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 3D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 1280x1024 pixels, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured on the threedy forums.

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in their WIP thread before the end of the month deadline, as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging only.

Posting Works in Progress

Each challenge participant will have one thread each that starts their name followed by the challenge name, then a name for there scene.... so for instance member name, Stylized Challnege #02 - Wastelands etc etc. that thread will then be where all entrants post their WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Judging

Everyone who entered can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up & announce the winner(s).

Timeframe & Deadline

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

February 24th, 11:59 pm GMT - FRIDAY

For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the 'VOTING' thread before the 27th of February 2012. Voting will take place from the 28th February to the 1st March 2012, when the winners will be announced.

This month we have chosen POST APOCALYPTIC WASTELAND!

Brief Description: Apocalyptic fiction is a sub-genre of science fiction that is concerned with the end of civilization due to a potentially existential catastrophe such as nuclear warfare, pandemic, extraterrestrial attack, impact event, cybernetic revolt, technological singularity, dysgenics, supernatural phenomena, divine judgement, climate change, resource depletion or some other general disaster. Post-apocalyptic fiction is set in a world or civilization after such a disaster. The time frame may be immediately after the catastrophe, focusing on the travails or psychology of survivors, or considerably later, often including the theme that the existence of pre-catastrophe civilization has been forgotten (or mythologized). Post-apocalyptic stories often take place in an agrarian, non-technological future world, or a world where only scattered elements of technology remain. There is a considerable degree of blurring between this form of science fiction and that which deals with dystopias.

So in this challenge we ask you to create you own stylized wasteland, it could be from your own imagination or an existing city, place, landmark that been ravaged by time and space etc. The stylized element of this challenge means it needs to look totally different than anything else that's currently on the planet, so for instance you could reduce time square in New York to a wasteland full of rubble or transform London's Westminster to an overgrown forest. The choice will be all yours, as usual please post your work in progress in this thread and above all enjoy it and have fun :)

I might have to give this a try.

Thought that myself :)

Always wanted to try something like this..... especially damaged buildings etc...... will look into what I want to create...... although haven't sketched for a long LONG time, will HAVE to plan this one :)

Got a brilliant idea already..... but no idea if i'll be able to pull it off, I wanna go all out for this...... texturing will be difficult for me but i've got a pretty good idea forming..... more later.

Never did an environment.:hurt: Definitely gonna join.

As far as the environment goes, are we limited to creating a whole scene like (Times Square) for example or can we do an alley or a street?

it is difficult for me, but i'll try because i've never created enviroment in my whole life. :D

Me neither... but that's the fun of it, a real challenge.

xxxcubanxxx - You can do what you like, however you wish to interpret the subject matter, for instance you could create an entire wasteland/cityscape or you could just model an abandoned alleyway etc, or even just a desert with burnout vehicles ala Mad Max/Rage/Borderlands, Fallout/I Am Legend etc etc.

I'd started modelling a train and a bus that are gonna be in mine, but really need to draw a concept..... but as I found out earlier I really suck at drawing.... it's been about 10 years since I drew properly :wall:

Oh man this is such an awesome challenge, and really really tough . You don't see stylization too often in these types of environments. .. suppose Wall-E, Rango, 9, and Borderlands would be some of the the most obvious touchstones...

Ugh I really wish I could give this a go, but im still in the middle of a move and my computer is two thousand miles away... anyone know of a modeling package that will run on a seven year old laptop with a gig of ram?

Cinema 4D, Modo, Bryce & Moi should work fine :)

Wow really? I tried installing Maya and it wouldn't even launch...

Hmm I've been looking for a reason to learn Modo. Might be a good time to do it.

It should do, before I had my Mac I used to have a laptop and a Dell with only 1 gig of ram and Cinema 4D ran perfectly ok, as did Modo :)

Slight update!

I'm changing the rules ever so slightly as BiG ToE-3DT rightly mentioned to me, this challenge & future challenges will likely be big and overload one single thread, so please do create your own individual threads for the work in progress.

Label the thread with your name - Stylized Challenge #02 - "Name Of Your Entry"

So for instance my thread will be Classicgamer-3DT - Stylized Challenge #02 - London's Burning.

exactly like the Sculpting threads are created..... also this challenge will run until 27th February :)

Awesome! Do you have a preference between the two purely for modeling, or think one is easier to jump into?

Ill prob have my desktop by the time im ready to render anything, so ill just jump back into Maya at that point and stick with what I know.

Also thanks for the extension, this kind of work definitely takes a bit more time.

I'm biased for Cinema 4D.......... both are extremely easy to jump into and learn.... but I will say I learn't how to use the basics of Cinema 4D in around 2 hours, and it took about 4 hours for Modo, both are extremely easy to learn and dive straight into, as you've got experience with Maya you might prefer the GUI of Modo, but both can be changed to the same style of GUI that you are used to in Maya.

Also in cinema i've never had problems exporting to OBJ and importing into any other package if that's what you need to do.

ClassicGamer, thanks so much man. I won't be able to start anything until Feb 1st anyway so I'll probably do a bit more reading about the two. I've always been interested in trying Modo, but C4D actually looks lighter on the system requirements, and everyone that's used it says its incredibly easy to jump in.

Nope, apart from being featured on the site. It's been decided to just compete for fun :)

arty, I saw your avatar and for a second I thought you were Kerem Beyit... man that guy can paint a mean dragon!

Anyway I think my laptop could probably run it, but I'm not sure if it'll output .obj files to take into zbrush and maya later on. I'm actually leaning toward picking up the C4D trial and giving that a shot.

That app does look interesting for preparing simple models for 3D printing though. Almost like Autodesk's answer for sketchup...

Signed up for the forum mainly to participate in this (been watching these forums for years, and I plan on being decently active here from here on out). Excited about this challenge though! Think I have a definitely... stylized approach to this one too!
