So, I'm getting ready to upgrade my computer and was thinking, what is everyone else working with?
Post a picture of your computer, maybe even toss out a few specs. Then maybe we can cut down on the, what should I get in my next computer threads. All the info they need will be in here. That includes me.
Thanks again Poopipe:dance:
As soon as my parts get here, and I get it together, I'll show my before and after images.

Oh, and no one wants to see your parts... :p
I'm only running on a lonely Q6600 quad, with 8GB's of RAM, a 8800GTS 640, 1TB HD with Windows 7 Professional.
Oh and the monitor is a Samsung 20 inch 16:10 SyncMaster 206BW (Max res of 1680x1050)

I don't build for 3D anymore. My latest rig is built for multi-tasking/programming. I use a AMD 1090t processor, 8GB of RAM (which I STILL haven't boosted to 16 as intended at build time), 2TB hard drive and Nvidia GT 460. It gives me good balance and is/was affordable.

I'm pretty satisfied with mine:
I7-980 @ 2,7 GHz. If I'm doing something intense, I can easily clock it to 3.8 GHz :D
12 Gb 1333 mhz Ram
One 300 Gb and one 500 Gb harddrives.
GTX 580 1,5 GB GPU
and two 1680x1050 monitors.
Seeing as, this'll do me pretty well for the next year or even two, next item on my list is a 24" Cintiq, since they cost about half as much in Denmark, where I live now, than back in Iceland.

NZXT Sentry 2 LCD Fan Control 5,25" Bay.
4 x Cooler Master SickleFlow 120mm.
24 LG Flatron screen.
Logitech g500 mouse . Logitech MX 3200 Keyboard.
The best upgrade i have made in the last five years is the ssd disc. All programs run faster. Start up, normal operations, everything.
It's worth the money.

My best one is:
Intel I7-2600K @ 3.40 GHz (8 CPUs)
16 GB RAM
GeForce 580 GTX
80 GB SSD for Windows 7, software and current project (the speed of an SSD is ridiculous)
2x2 TB HDD @7200 RPM
+ a bunch of additional coolers
I do not overclock, ever.
I bought this in July 2011, and my next purchase will have 32 GB Ram (because 16 is just not enough for After Effects and FumeFX) and will be whatever the top Intel processor will be at that time.

I should have listened to Poopipe, I just picked up a GTX550 ti about a month ago, so, didn't want ti to go to waste. Went and got another one. Now, the drivers dont seem to be working. Black screen everytime I install them.
old setup was:
a quad core intel I guess it was 3.2 ghz
6 gigs of ram
two 500 gig internal hard drives, (1) 500 gig and (1) 1 tb externals
gtx 550 ti gpu
new:
asus sabertooth mother board (loving it)
i7 3.5
16 gig of ram
(3) 500 gig SATA internal hard drives
and get this, I went to best buy looking for a ssd, found a 500 gig ssd drive for 130 dollars. I asked the guy if that was a mistake, he said, not his problem.
(1) 500 gig SSD hard drive
(2) GTX 550 ti (no working drivers)
I think mine is the worst here, though mine is now getting on a bit. I can't even remember when I built it, it was that long ago.

It'll do for max, I've barely seen any improvement with max between my old 260&280 and the 560ti in my dell box, it doesn't make any use of the newer features under directX mode so all you're really going to get an effect from is memory bandwidth. in my case i suspect the cpu is a bottleneck whereas yours Will make up for any shortcomings, particularly under citrus

Big Toe -
Does your power suppy have enough juice for both cards ?
Since one requires abo ut 400W, I´d think you need at least a 1000W PSU to run both cards + rest.
Are you sure the cables aren't faulty.
Do both of them work individually.
And are they from the same manufacturer ?
BiG ToE-3DT

Yep, got a 1000 watt power supply. I figure the card works, I put the old one, which I know works in the second slot, new one in the first. Everything is hooked up to the new one, which works when the drivers are not installed. But as soon as the drivers get installed, I boot up to a black screen.
I may have to back down to a single card. If that is the case, I'll return the one card and get the 580 like everyone says. Then try and sell the old one. Or give it to my brother.

What model of the i7 did you get BigToe? I would HIGHLY recommend the 2600 or 2700 sandybridge series i7.
My main work machine is an older 920 (non-sandybridge) and its really fast. But my render box has a 2600 sandybridge and it can almost cut render time in half. Hell, even my macbook pro (with a 2700-series sandybridge) can outspeed my primary machine on certain scenes, despite heat and power-saving issues.
When it comes to just raw-number crunching (which is what most rendering consists of), the sandybridge outperforms anything else out there, hands down (yes, including top-of-the-line, multi-cpu xeons).

not so sure how fast it is just yet, haven't installed any of my programs yet.
as far as the driver situation goes, nvidia has a audio driver that conflicts with the audio driver of the motherboard, I'm guessing they don't work well with each other. After removing the nvidia audio driver and reinstalling the graphics driver, it seems to be working. For now.

If you look here, you can see that one 580 ( 82.2 FPS result ) is still stronger than 2 550s in SLI ( 74.9 FPS result) : http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/Aliens-vs.-Predator-Gamer,Marque_fbrandx876,2667.html

did you just compare my pc to an apple computer?:wall:

on a side note, I returned the 2 550's, because I was doing an exchange, they didn't charge me the restocking fees, which would have been 25% the cost of the 2 cards. The 580, its, so, big.

not many people have - there's rumours similar to that one about pandora's box about the consequences of opening a mac outside the holy sanctum of an apple store and the presence of a mac genius
a mac pro is just a xeon built with the best quality components in a fricking awesome case by the time you've wiped the disks and put windows on it - no shame in being compared to that.

Installing Windows on a Mac would be like painting an orange with gold powder, when you eat it you are going to remove the shell anyway. A Mac is just a branded PC, you can buy the same parts (or better) for a fraction of the price.
Anyway I just upgraded my rig last week, my new specs are:
AMD FX-8120 8-core 3.1GHz (will overclock it when I get better cooling)
ASUS M5A 78L-M USB3

...my phone has more processing power than my laptop.
My pc is as follows.
It's black, some lights on the front. Got a hole in the side with a spinning thing in it. There's little pink and green holes in the front, and they make me happy. Inside there's some dust, wires in lots of pretty colors, and a big green thing. Also it says cooler master on the front, I bet that means it's super fast.
My grandma thinks it's pretty fast, and I bet she's an expert on computers.

not strictly true
There's no hiding the fact you're paying an apple premium on their products but to say you can get the same hardware for a fraction of the price just isn't true.
These aren't consumer level boxes to be built on a budget - every component is of absolute top quality and they're designed to work constantly and reliably for years.
If you go and spec yourself a system that matches the spec of a mac pro with the best quality components you can find you won't fall far short of the cost of the mac - and you still need to factor in well over £500 for an equivalent case.

Warning to anyone that cares.
the i7 intel proccessor, paired with the p67 chipset motherboard, causes some strange error in the stata drive cables. After some time, the motherboard is unable to recognize the hard drive.
I learned this the hard way. Freaked out for a few days, thinking I lost everything. On boot up, the system says can't locate the operating system. When I popped into the bios, the main hard drive was not showing up. Long story short, I had to upgrade the motherboard and send in the old one to get replaced. Now I have a motherboard sitting here, doing nothing. A waste of money in the end.
