Hey all... I've just finished modelling a low poly commando for a game I am working on... havent textured it yet so I just slapped on some basic block colour ... all C&C's welcome...

that looks S***
Well I wouldn't go that far, but in order to have any real detail here, the texture is going to have to do a lot of work, because there's not much there in the mesh.
The anatomy is off in places - the feet are too short, the mouth is non existant, the arms are a mass of lumps rather than believable muscles, and the face is almost blank. The eyes are tiny & too close together & the mouth is non existant.
You may not have been going for realism, but a passing nod to real world anatomy helps sell the believability of the character.
I also think the mesh could use some more work - without seeing a wirreframe it's difficult to judge accurately, but those shoulders don't deform well judging from the pic.
Sorry if this sounds harsh - it's not meant to be really. I would say what you have there is a good start that needs more work & detail, especially in the face.

I've got a character who is "somewhat" similar. I'll give you the same critique that I got - spend some time working on the face. A well modeled face can make an okay model a good model.
Can't wait to see the textures. Here's a decent link for low poly texturing. Hope it helps.

Why is it a "Heavy weapons guy" holding a tiny SubMachine gun? My grandma, were she still among us, could fire that thing. I think you gotta give the guy heavy weapons to go with his name... like a gatling gun or something :P

hehe thats the scouts weapon... I havent modelled his m60 yet ;)
Thanks for the comments... I'll try and get a wireframe sorted soon... the texturing stage has begun and is already making it alot better...
just so you know its not going to be for a 3d game.. eventually they are only going to be little 64 X 64 sprites so I wasnt aiming at loads and loads of detail... just a quick shape to texture really.. Saying that they will end up being used for some more close up menu screen shots and maybe a little intro... but nothing uber realistic or high poly...
I've got another face that I think I wil probably "transplant" onto him anyway... that area was definatly rushed...
The texturing is well under way and is already making it much better... I hope to have it done for monday of next week...
I'll get a wireframe and upload it when I can...
cheers

hmmm Things have changed quite dramatically... and I've decided to start again from scratch... :)
looking at the model now I realise that the initial concept
and construct planes were done in too much haste...
so I've sat back and started with some concept work
to build up on the details... (which when I look at it now were severly lacking) I've only just got the torso head and arms to an acceptable level and still have to do the legs... but I thought I would post it for comments etc...

My first addtion was the backpack... he's a heavy weapon guy so he's gonna need somewhere to stash is ammo...
he's also got an belt with pouches and a canteen on to build on the detail..... with his leg section I'm giving him a pistol holster on his left thigh and a combat knife strapped to his right calf...
Thanks for the comments on the above model... its really helped me look at my work with a more critical eye.. and given me the motivation to start again :D

You might want to add those criss-crossing straps of bullets. If he has a big gun, it usually chews through a lot of ammo belts. Besides, their fun.

yeah... I was thinking of adding somthing like that......
here's an update... not that much more done... a couple of drastic things and mostly subtle changes really... I decided his hair.. (that most people thought was a hat) :) had to go... so I did just that... I got rid of the bulging cheeks.. sorted out a problem with his left shoulder appearing too low... gave him a canteen and a belt... hmm I think thats about it...

I'm happy with the way its going... I just need more time!!!!

yah, the poly count there doesn't quite make sense. you can get quite a bit more detail with that amount of poly's. Good luck!
