View Full Version : Japo - Stylized Challenge #05 - "Pigeons"
For this challenge I hope to make 5 pigeons. And you know me, I want you to guess who they will be. The picture is already in my head, so the only challenge is to match my mental image to that on the screen :)
I intend to start with one generic bird from which I will proceed to the 5 individuals adding some typical features of their human counterparts. Toes crossed, I will post the generic pigeon tonight :)

I really hope to see something along the lines of Reservoir Dogs knowing you :)
Or the Pigeon Beatles!
Lots of idea's growing, can't wait to see where you go with this, glad to see you on board this challenge!
hehe there are loads of possibilities :D But first things first. Here is the generic model I will use for all the pigeons. There are some variations in neck sizes and torso sizes. I did those just to see how it looks. There is also winged version, as one bird has to fly (there will be only one flying, regardless of total number). Do not take it as a hint though, its for purposes of composition and to better "capture" the personality of the birds real life counterpart. Today I have thought of expanding the "flock" to 7 birds (rules out Beatles :))

Haha when I saw your thread title I immediately thought of The Goodfeathers from Animaniacs.

They look great! I wouldn't know where to start modelling a cartoon bird :)
Thank you :) Here is first shot at two of the five pigeons. I just hope they at least resemble the characters. Postures will differ in the final image of course.

The taller one looks like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory :)
Oooooooooooo thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you :D. After staring at the image in the process of modelling, I could no longer tell if I got it right.

math, science, history unraveling the mystery... :)

Very good likenesses :)
Can't wait to see this progress!
How are you going to tackle the feathering? Displacement Map & Textures? Or Hair/Fur Generation?
Thank you very much :)
Feathers will be textures, normal maps, possibly displace (if my computer allows it). It will be better way to achieve the... "puffyness" of pigeon feathers. Well, if I use proper shader of course :)
Hair would be heavy for my machine and it would "inflate" those models so I would have to compensate the volume in geometry. To make it proper, I would have to use different hair lengths, and adjust the base mesh accordingly in every place to maintain the current shape. Meaning I would have to remodel everything (lesson learned the hard way many years ago :D)

don't watch the show, but you are really good at making people into pigeons! I've always thought pigeons were awesome. I look forward to seeing the textures, get some nice purple and green around those necks!

4th day no updates. Ah JACameronPO what are you waiting for :)
Wonderful cartoon bird modeling. They look so nice I am wondering about the final renders :)
I am sorry for such a delay and thank you very much for your patience and support.
I have been busy and therefore wasted when I came home. And fact I have been doing modeling all day didnt help either - its always better when I wear different hat before competitions (like animator's, effects, post etc.) :)
But here is roughly the composition I will go with. Maybe move camera a small bit upwards. And maybe move the card to right side of the door to make room for the show title.
And here is one for the nerds: there is molecule model in Sheldon's apartment. I am doing the same here, only less complex molecule. Can you tell which amino acid is it? (those good at chemistry and TBBT nerds should have no problem with this one).
Its quarter past 2. This morning wont be a pleasant one.
Greetings everyone :)
texturing aint going as well as I have expected... so here is a little something in the meantime. The card that will decorate wall in background.
oh and that molecule is Sheldons favorite amino acid lysine :)
There will be one more update today (I hope). Anyways, its half past four here, and this is my progress so far. Deadline is tomorrow midnight, right? :)

That looks great to me :)
Thank you :)
as evening turned into early morning, I have decided not to post another wip. But here is the final. Barely made it.
- Its strangely blurred here though. I hope its only my browser, as all previews look sharp.
