View Full Version : Do you hate sniper rifles?
k guys, i need some help. I'm currently working on a mod for HL2 (actually, we started for UT2K3 and made some progress, then bailed for HL2, but now we may go back to UT, but i guess that dosn't matter) And me and the team are in a deadlock. Sniper Rifles or no Sniper rifles? Some of us hate them, Others love them. What do you guys think?
P.S. I'll post pics of the gun models as soon as i get them from our modeling guys.

Well as you can tell from my name I love using sniper rifles in games, but it really does depend on alot of things.
Firstly, what kind of game is it? If it's a team death match / objective type game like CS etc., then sniper rifles usually make an appearence, but of course there's no point having these rifles if they're not catered for in the level design. If it is a tactical FPS then sniper rifles are a very worthy addition as a sharp sniper can help greatly to both clear the way for advancing teams, or to defend their position.
One of the main concerns about sniper rifles in games are that most rifles are one shot kills, like the AWM in Counter-Strike, and too many users wielding these beasts can be very frustrating for other players.
I suggest you work out how the maps will work, and then come to a conclusion. If you still can't decide then I say add them and write a few more lines of code to allow server admins to easily disable and / or limit the amount one team can carry.
Hope I've helped a bit, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions, I've both been in and created many mods, most for Half-Life, so I know how important these kind of decisions can be :)
Looking forward to seeing the models :)
ok, heres a brief summery of gamplay.
It will be a team based game, but not in the usual way. One side will be human's, they will buy weapons in a system somewhere between Tribes and CS. except ammo wont be as plentifull, so you actually have to aim - no spray and pray here.
The other side will be non-human's, this will be an entirely class based side. but the differences between the classes will be huge(no barely different reskins). so far we have the light troop, who is very fast, can climb walls, leap far and has a very powerfull close range attack. then we have the heavy, it can pick up physics objects and throw them, as well as pick up opposing troops and throw them, with a sort of ranged grappling hook arm thingy. we want to add at least 2 more classes, but havnt decided what yet. all of the non-humans will be able to push around physics items very easily.
As for gameplay, all the maps will be built on some sort of roadway, so they will be long and narrow (think 1 mile by .1 miles). the humans will start at one end of the road, and thier goal will be to get to the other end alive, plain and simple. So, naturaly, the nonhumans goal is to stop them. it sound like gamplay would be way easy for the humans, but i plan to build the maps to favor the non-humans. with lots of physics items for them to build barricades with, as well as many hiding spots. So in a way im encourageing camping for the Nonhumans, but since they are mostly short range attackers, they have to come out to fight. We want to capture a surt of survival horror feel, without the slow gameplay.
so, back to the original question, Should humans have sniper rifles? I think if we give the humans snipers the game will turn into a 3D version of duckhunt, but like i said the other guys want them. Also, any and all other input you guys have is very welcome - the concept is very rough and will be close to impossivle to pull off. so we need all the advice we can get.

Um if the point of the game is to get to the other end of the road, then sniper rifles is nono.
Reasons for my comment are: the humans have no use to it cause they have to advance all the time, so small handy weapons with great damage up close is te choise to go, uzi, shotgun etc.
non-humans, they try to stop them, how frustrating is for the humans to be shot everytime from mile away by these so called "defenders" it craps the gameplay, believe me, if you make snipers then it is the same to make the non-humans invisible and 500% faster than humans and put a invisible wall in the middle of the map. Cause that it is like.
Personally I like snipers, but not in this kind of game you described.
If don't have anything to say don't post here again. Thank you.

Well you are talking about team play. The sniper rifle is a very used weapon. Maybe you could try to take away some of the accuracy to the rifle but to me is seems a must. Sounds somewhat like Halo to me but you can be the covenent. I do not know if it is possible but you could try to incorperate wind and distance were you would have to use the ticks in the scope to aim properly. Put some realism to the gun. Most games the round does not fall with distance. Wind does not effect it. It they are close range fighters then make sure you put coverage in. It would make hard to use the sniper rifle without hitting your own guys. Just my thoughts.
Thanks for the comments, so you know -B- is is also on the team and he started a new thread in the game art forum, its more of a general discussion forum about the mod. theres actual posted pics in that forum too.

yeah, but the Team Fortress one sucked in many many ways.
First of all, it looked really stupid, that laser sight thing was the worst idea ever..
and the auto fire idea...well..wjhoever thought of that idea should really be hit over the head with a rather large plank of wood.
Guys, dont forget, one side is mostly Melee attack based (read my big post in the beggining of the thread for play details). If one side has guns, and the other dosn't, i think the side with guns should have close range guns.
Also, in the big post i mentioned wanting more classes for the Non-human side (can you tell were having trouble thinking of names?), any thoughts as to what they sould be?
