I have this new book I got. "3ds max animation and visual effects techniques" But in this one tutorial it doesn't realy make sence to me. Please help!

Here it is: Extrude the stair area up about 20 units ( I know what to do there) and then scale back about 10% (don't get) click bevel again but don't extrude (I get it) but now scale smaller by 20% (don't get) Now bevel again but downward to original level( I get it) and scale smaller by 10% ( don't get).

Im not sure if you would need pics, if you can't halp, thats ok. But if you can, that would be great!

THANKS :D

Extruding and then scaling is the same as bevelling.
Does the book show images of the end result ?
Are you using editable poly or editable mesh ?

Don't get nr1: After extruding grab your scale tool and look on the bottom(where you normally see the coordinates), then scale that polygon, while you are doing that look down and you see with how much percent you are scaling, use 90.

Don't get nr2: You might as well use inset for it, i think it doesn't have to be perfectly 20%, so you have to guess that part.

Don't get nr3: After extruding -20 grab the scale tool and scale it again with 90%.

I attached a pic to show you the result, i began with a box.

I bought that book a few days ago, i hope it isn't that bad, i'm still waiting for it to be delivered.

I have this book as well. I wouldnt spend too much time on the brief modeling and texturing areas as this book is mostly focused on animation and some effects. Lots of good stuff on rigging and skinning a character.
