UPDATED MESSAGE:
for those who dont want to browze through the WIP,you can view the updated set of renders here:
i saw this wacom artwork at another forum and decided to model something along the same lines.
the storyboard concept is mine:
STORY BOARD:
time period: late 25th century(post aplocalyptic period)
background story:all life support is obsolete.people no longer live on earth due to unsuitable atmospheric conditions and hazardous natural phenomenon.
psyclopse-advanced earthquake generator prototype:is an advanced earthquake generator.hydraulics based/uses water resources to initiate kinetic/mechanical energy for generating food resources and oxygen necessary for surival of the residents of the megacity that it holds.the main engine is hydraulics based and rests below the main body/hull.
this is what i have so far,
thx for taking the time

mmmm..is that just a sky map used for the environment in the first pic?
I love the coloring and mood the sky creates in the scene.. Very nice! And pretty incredible detail on the tank!
Nice work. :D

17-10-2003, 05:35 AM
thx for the comment jyncus, yeah i post my stuff there sometimes,no constructive feedback there anymore.
started working on the mechanical generator inside the tank, still a long way to go...

Heh I know what you mean..the 3D section on somethingleet stays pretty dead. =/
Anyhow, I'd be interested in hearing what kinda methods you used for that mechanical generator section - heh I always have a real hard time with mechanical modeling. - err, specifically the "joint" areas you know.
Looking awesome so far!

ths for the comment jyncus.i am pretty much sticking tostandard/basic objects, box modeling some of the other details, the concept is pretty much in my mind still.:) because the scale of this thing in real world will be colossal,so i will have to texture in a lot of detail too.:)
Dire Wolf
17-10-2003, 08:44 PM
I assume this tank is HUGE, since it is carrying a city on its back. I think you need to add some reference objects in your first scene (or your final scene) to give it some scale.
Maybe some burnt out trees, or even better building ruins.
Jazzy
17-10-2003, 10:23 PM
I think it's a great start, so well done :D
The piston looks a bit like a leg, so maybe the tanks could transform into huge robots ? hehe .... just kidding.
Seriously though, everything looks nice and clean and well constructed so far. I'll be looking forward to some updates so good luck with the rest of the work.

lol ok ill look for sum concept ideas for ya man :D
//edit// nope, cant find ne so heres the basic ideas, one: a pole/drill that sticks into the ground and vibrates at natural frequency (And disturbs magma) to create earthquakes, giant speakers.. i dunno e)(plosives? a giant crystal that creates sonic waves when a lazer or sumthing hits it ?

I am a tad confused on the concept.
This machine generates earthquakes? For oxygen and food? How does it get oxygen etc. from an earthquake?
Or do I have it backwards, the machine uses the energy from earthquakes. Then uses that energy to produce food and oxygen for the city.
jawahar
19-10-2003, 11:15 PM
thanks for the comments.
dire wolf:the vehicle derives heat energy that the core releases when an earthquake is created and water from the surface and then transforms that energy using a solar generator into water and oxygen for survival.:)
i am modeling the core/solar generator right now
will post updates soon.

thx for the comments so far guys.decided to rework the concept a bit more, the legs dont really seem to hold much gravitational force to be able to generate an earthquake so i changed the setup a bit.
still modeling the suspension below the main hull and the generator core that will go inside the vehicle along with the interior, also have to add lights and navigation system(radar).
please leave any suggestions/refernces about a cityscape to add to the environment.

Wow! Hey, who gets to drive this thing?
What happens if you throw a tread or something else breaks outside this beast? Are there gonna be little R2-D2's or is there going to be some kind of mek for mechanics?
Might be interesting if there were some forward scouts or something.
jawahar
30-10-2003, 07:48 PM
thx for the feedback xlnt,
i am going to model the interior soon.
still stuck on the suspension and the engine.
its a vehicle from the post apocalyptic period ,so there is no sustainable life on the surface anymore, the megacity on the top holds the population of the existing human race.
read the storyboard, then it will be more clear to you.and your ideas are very much appreciated, thanks
keep the feedback coming guys, improvisation is my aim for this project
thx
XLNT 3d
30-10-2003, 08:22 PM
The storyboard states that "people no longer live on earth ", but they live on this "megacity". That was a little confusing. No sustainable life on the surface makes sense tho.
I'm not trying to break your balls, but things break and experience wear and tear, especially in extreme conditions. I was just curious on the maintenance of this bad mama jama.
BTW it is a cool model and excellent modeling skills.

XLNT 3d: sorry for the grammatical errors on the storyboard,i will fix that:p
yeah ,i havent really thought much about the maintainence of this vehicle yet, using droids would be very cool concept indeed.

I thought the whole thing was just on one set of tracks, i didn't realise that was just one side .... and that there would be another set of tracks aswell !!!
I t's a great piece of modelling and i can't wait to see it finished, how much more do you have to do in terms of actual construction ? I would assume there is alot of detailing to do, but i'm just wondering how much bigger this thing will get ? :haha:

I am speechless! This is an amazing model and concept. I have been waiting for someone to create something in this type of sci-fi vein.
As for a cityscape idea, how about something similar to the ruined Tokyo city in Akira? You could even go all out and either model or do a matte painting of the huge Neo-Tokyo cityscape and then degrade it and make it look as if it has been destroyed by nuclear war, etc.
I will keep a close eye on this thread as I am utterly excited to see the end result. Keep chuggin on this one!

The mechanics are very nice.. The problem I see is that the city that this thing is supposed to support is a couple boxes on very detailed treads...
I guess you'll want to get the earthquake generator bit out of the way first, but if you aren't planning on it currently, I'd suggest making the city parts LOOK like a city.. like with transportation areas, greenhouses, police, etc etc. Sorta like imagine someone started playing SimCity on top of your Syclopse :)

thank you guys ,really glad you like it so far.
any ideas on what to proceed with /feedback for a cityscape most appreciated .
thank you again for taking the time.
A couple of things that spring to mind after looking at the construction of the treads/ engine.
1. You need 7 axles, not just 2. The 2 you have there look pretty flimsy to hold all that weight :) Alternatively, you have the original 'city' parts directly over the dual treads. Perhaps you could split the treads just a bit more and put down supporting pillars underneath each city section. That way the weight can be transfered straight down to the treads from above, instead of through the axles.
2. City stuff - I just went looking for pictures of arcologies - I figured that 'giant, self-contained cities' was what you were looking for ;). Admittedly you'll have to use your imagination, but perhaps the attached image will help. Think green spaces in domes, transit tubes, etc. I believe the primary transport would be on foot.
3. Last thing - what's the scale of this thing? How big compared to a person?
novoAlias
24-11-2003, 11:54 PM
i think one segment of that tread flat would be about an 8 story building big, it looks like your going to need some seriously powerful hardware to do ne detial from a human perspective... but wow..just wow that things amazing, do it justice and make an animation, heres a few ideas, just seeing it in motion sould be impressive but why not have the camera follow some sort of ship docking etc.. i assume theres some sort of hangar etc in there? seeing it at a distance and getting bigger and bigger would be impressive to say the least :D hate to figure out the scales for a thing like that tho :p. also a biodome thing like that thing from the sims would be interesting, a rainforest type thing in a glass dome type other thing (complete with weather) would pretty much guarantee this a place in any 3d gallery IMHO :D:p and a nice landscape would be nice i wuld suggest more than one in the same scene but im not sure if any computer could handle that
sorry to type so much random stuff.. im winding down from the english exam.. plus too many ideas- ask if u want more!!! :p

25-11-2003, 08:11 PM
thx for the feedback Paws,BlackWolf and SteelViruZ.
Paws:i agree that the connection around the suspension and the treads has to be stronger.it needs 7 axels to connect to the treads,i will update the progreess on that sub comp soon.thanks a lot for the refernce pics for the city.
the real scale of the object with relation to human proportion would be a little out of comparison, like Black wolf mentioned, the height of one tread would probably be equal to 5-6 storeyed building, the challange for me at the moment is to optimize poly count and still portray a sense of huge scale.i al thinking of modeling all details for a city but at the same time confused whether i should just use textures for the buildings.
blackwolf: thanks for the ideas on the animation,i will surely animate this thing,i think putting the environment and the vehicle together and rendering with the animation would be quite impossible ,so i will end up composing the entire animaton with the effects in seperate passes and then composite in combustion with particle effects and enhanced dof.yeah,i hope it makes some 3d galleries too :)
thanks for the feedback everyone.

alright so i'm still in Aw of this, but i think ive pulled it together enough to give some input on that problem you mentioned.
SO the pins/drive shafts/ whatever they are (TOP RED) look to briddle and theres no chace of it holding up the engine. They connect at tred (TOP ARROW BLUE).
"TO ME" your going to have to add more (BOTTOM BLUE) inorder to drive the HEAVY looking treds. Space will be an issue... Some how connecting the two new pins (RED ARROW BOTTOM) via an extention of the block (BLUE ARROW BOTTOM) that the orginal pins are connected to should give the feeling that it will infact hold the weight of the engine...
I dunno if this jibberish helped yeah any ... i hope so.

wat is the point you are trying to make entangle? i know for a fact that booleans and primitives dont meshsmooth ;) how is that engine made with booleans? btw ive been dying to see a wireframe :p
Hello there.
Quite an impressive project, would be awesome to see it animated.
I also think that the belts need to be better supported, and I think the axle ends should be completly straight. As it is now it would cause a "bobbing" (not sure about the word) motion when turning the axles. Compare to a pair of bicycle pedals.
Keep up the good work!

thanks for the comments bjod, blackwolf and entangle.
entangle:wow man, thanks for that quick lesson in modeling,i will keep it in mind next time.:D :D :D
p:s : nearly nothing on it is a primitive except for the obvious hose object,i wouldnt model that wihen its already there.an intellegent modeler will not create things that are already set as default now would he..

I have to agree with the "flimsy" comments. Not so much flimsy, as just not as beefy as we instinctively suspect.
http://www.eyesonthecape.com/Shuttle%20pictures/Crawler_Transporter.jpg
Have you looked for pictures of this thing. This the crawler that carries the space shuttle to the launch pad.
You might notice that this thing is starting to look more like the structure of buildings than vehicles. Gusset plates, stiffeners, cross bracing....etc. Hydrolic rams instead of coil over shocks. Now I think a nice blend of the two looks, like you seem to be doing, will be great sci-fi. But keep in mind that perception is relative. Even way out there sci-fi stuff has to have real world references for us to "want to" believe it.

Sometime you are going to have to stop adding detail and start to texture. May god have mersy on your soul. Awsome work. I do look forward to seeing it. That is the part I hate to do. Mostly the UV mapping. I like to paint.
I love the original drawing and now the twist you put on it. Are you going to have it on an edge of a sink hole with the waterfalling like the original?

thx for the feedback rickstefani
just a few minor issues with the suspension and i am off to texturing,i hate it too :p .
i am planning on compositing the vehicle with a matte painting of a cityscape or modeling an environment with a post apocalyptic ruins of a cityscape.

damn dude, I can't believe the ammount of detail. I was working on a mechanical device myself, nowhere near your ammount of detail and it was already laggings, and I have a very good computer. Yours must be a nasa computer with a very cool room next to it which houses all it's harddrives and processors!:D

DanielB:my computer is pretty basic in configuration,i think file management and compositing will be a major factor in the later stages.
Drew Carey:this was the initial concept i was inspired by:http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/3341581/.
a lot of doodling and rough sketching on paper napkins and sketchpads is yielding the project, will scan some of them in soon.:o

some updates on the engine, figured the motor and the engine need some external casing to shield against weather conditions or earthquake generating impact, will update more soon.

also with the wheels ,can you be more specific.

In the last render ,u might have noticed that i changed the alignment of the arms to horizontal leverage rather than keeping them vertical,i think it justifies the scale of the model.
suggestions on whether to stick to the current settings most aprpeciated,i think it will make a major effect on the mechanics during the final animation.
