I thought I'd build my favorite car. Much more to do with it. Not the easiest model to build. I'm still looking for more reference photos of the top and rear hatch area. Any good links, let me know. :)
I haven't posted a wip in quite a while.

Wow! I appreciate all the comments and photos. All very helpfull. Tiny update. I took a detour from working on the body and built the rims and tires. Glossy reflections on the wheels and disks, double-sided material for the paint (It speeds up renders because the renderer doesn't have to calculate reflections on the backside of the materials.) Polymodeled body, splined rims and tires.
Time to get back to working on the body.

Hey.. looking really good .. i try to clarify my question:
Case in point, below is my car, showing my attempt at putting in door handles. Would this be how you would do it. Or you would you do it later when your in poly mode ? I find it hard to edit polys on the car so i do all my work in spline mode first. LMK if this makes any sense.
Second question, if your using Brazil (i assume u are) which version are you using? I have gotten my hands on the new Max 6 and have installed Brazil 1.0 to no avail (crashes out). LMK.
Radarhead
27-10-2003, 02:10 AM
Thanx.
Personally, I would do it when you're editing polys. It's difficult to be sure since I don't know what style of door handles are on the car you're modeling. I use Max 5 and Brazil 1.0.

Thanks! Definently lots of good stuff in that Elise thread.
How's my paint?:
Radarhead
28-10-2003, 05:22 PM
cyberdenz: If I didn't state so earlier, I use Brazil. The last renders with the soft shadows used the Brazil skylight, tinted slightly blue. The car is sitting on a circle shape that was converted to a mesh. CSG (Brazil's quick ground plane) makes the renders take longer so I use a circular plane with a two-sided material as a ground to ensure light distrubution is even.
snowMAN: HDRI: Make sure the HDRI white balance is set up correctly when loaded and use the white point as a guide only to setting the output of the image. Often the HDRI will look more realistic if the RGB output is set lower than the whitepoint.
Zymotico. The paint looks great!

looks incredible, i cant believe you work so fast lol
whenever im doing cars i always get these weird mesh errors when doing seams then yeah...
are your meshes all quads?
and a pink version would look badass... lol
keep it up, cant wiat till the interiors done
Radarhead
29-10-2003, 01:31 AM
neo_mosher_zion: I won't give away the bump map (although I may have posted it in another one of my car threads.) I don't just apply a bump map since a real tire's look is more than just due to the tread's relief. I use a blend material for the tread using the bump map as the mask. The raised tread has a no-specular dirt type material and the sunken tread is darker with a slight amount of gloss/spec. I apply the bump map to both materials. I painted that tread in Photoshop and it is seamless.
sarN: I do have one or two tri's and a couple of 5-sided polys but it's almost all quads. Meshtools and csPolytools helps me slide edges into place when I need sharp edges.
Pink?!? Are you serious?
snowMAN
29-10-2003, 02:21 AM
Thanks sooo much for the tips radar. One more question. Do you blur your image for the sky light and use an unblurred image for reflections? Or are all the hdr's in the scen left as is.
Radarhead
29-10-2003, 02:49 AM
I didn't use an image for the lighting. Just the Brazil skylight tinted to whatever color I needed. Sometimes I paint my own "HDRI"s in Photoshop when I want a more dynamic lighting setup with soft shadows but I didn't do that for these renderings.
I almost NEVER use HDRI's for lighting since the sample rate must be set so high to get a smooth result. I have developed my own technique for painting lighting images in Photoshop. Some secrets I must keep for myself.) :)
no wonder your images look so good lol
i always lit mine with HDRI lol... they sucked :p
anyway keep it up... and ... YES, PINK!

although im not sure if i can actualy create tires like some of the tires ive seen posted here. plus i cant texture that great, im probably going to have trouble unless i get into this weekend class that is at a univeristy near me, they might be able to explain how to get into textures better.
Radarhead
29-10-2003, 04:46 AM
neo_mosher_zion: If you're unfamiliar with blend materials refer to your Max help files. You don't need a class to learn how to make convincing materials although it might speed up the learning process. Of course you can create tires like you've seen. Just don't give up.
sarN: I thought Barbie drove a Corvette. :) Solid pink or metallic pink?
I started the interior today but only got the basic shape of the dash completed due to lack of time.
Morzog
29-10-2003, 05:05 AM
I have seen your interiors before and they are nothing short of amazing. I am working on my interior but it is really hard getting it right with just being able to see it it the perspective viewport. Was wondering how you get yours so perfect, aside from the fact that you are very skilled? Should I be detaching and hiding or something?
snowMAN
29-10-2003, 05:11 AM
Again thanks for the tips. I know how it is sometimes, people askin how to you have done things, wantin to know without them actual goin thru the trial and error. I have begun to paint my own hdr's now it makes the scen light set up so much better.
Your mat on the brack disc is amazing. I assume you made that with splines and then have some costume maps. Prob a little more complicated then that. Looks Amazing tho.
Radarhead
29-10-2003, 05:57 AM
Morzog: I find as many interior photos as I can as a reference for modeling interiors. Model all the ellements as seperate objects, isolating only the other parts needed in order to get things to line up, etc. Example: to model the dash you may only need the windshield or doors visible. Don't forget that you can hide groups of polygons so that only the neccessary polys are visible. Like the back edge of the hood, etc. Otherwise, your system may bog down while rotating the view due to the high number of polys the video card is drawing.
snowMAN: Thanks . The brake discs are splined. The material is a combination of a custom bump map, color filter map and glossy reflections.

awesome job radarand if im not mistaken, thats the low poly wire blended in with the smoothed and textured car right?
Radarhead
29-10-2003, 07:01 PM
The body wire is NOT smoothed. The tire geometry does not get smoothed. That's how they are at render time. I could do one with a smoothed wire. The model is over 500,000 polys smoothed now.

Ok, sarN. Is this pink enough? LOL!
i just keep looking at this car and, your seams are amazing lol, you should write a tutorial on how you do yours like, whenever i do mine i always get like a mesh error
heres what i do... i chamfer all the edges at .15 then cut two edges to form squares to keep it sharp
then extrude the border back... then i get like small knots near the sharp part of the seam (most of the time)

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't have any time to work on the car today.
DBJ: Haven't really thought about my next project.
Silver Bullet: I may write a short tutorial on how to do a composite like that.
cyberdenz: I won't be doing a car tutorial. There are already plenty of good ones out there.
Dire Wolf: I use Brazil glass and a custom painted bump map for the headlights applied to only one side of the lens. The lens in modeled with thickness like the real thing. IOR of 1.5 for all the glass on the model.
ido: A subway train? LOL!
RafG: I use Brazil Advanced Default materials for auto paint, placing a Fresnel Falloff in the reflection slot, with an IOR of 2.5. The discs are simple splines with a Bevel modifier to extrude and slightly bevel the edges.
Kujoe: I'm not sure what your question is. Do you mean for reflections etc.?

You want to move a material from the material editor to the environment slot? All you need to do is drag the material to the environment slot.
To go from environment slot to material editor - Drag from the environment slot to the material editor
Hope you dont mind me helping you out. Also hope Radarhead doesn't either. :)

Thats odd...What type of material are you trying to drop into the slot?
I believe it has to be a map (ie noise, bitmap, smoke, etc) not a material. Beyond that maybe post a screenshot of the material you are trying to drop in the environment slot.

Ahhh...You are trying to place a HDRI map in the enviroment slot, I believe.
Try following this tutorial for that. (HDRI (http://www.splutterfish.com/gabry_hdri_tut_tmp/) ) Much clearer and detailed.
You will need this plugin (here (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/downloads/max/hdri/HDRI_v1.0.1.zip) )
And here (http://www.debevec.org/) you can get some HDRI maps. You will need to edit them using HDR Shop (http://www.debevec.org/HDRShop/), which is covered in the above tutorial.

Ray: You can't drag a material into the environment slot but you CAN drag a bitmap into the slot. Click the Get Material button and select Bitmap. Then choose the HDRI that you want to use. Make sure to map it spherically. Then you can drag it to the environment. Make sure you select "Instance."

Yes, the wire one was a PS composite from 3 renders. One was the wire, the normal render and one was just the car with an alpha channel that I used for masking in PS.

Hehe, thank you, my friend! Kujoe and Radarhead-how do you like this car paint material I came up with? I used an HDRI map from the site you (kujoe) gave me for the reflections, and radarheads settings for the paint! Not meaning to steal your thread radarhead, just wondering if this is looking correct to you? Your model is looking great so far radar. I really love the white paint you have! The purple/pink/red in the last couple of renders is looking really nice too. And kujoe, I don't think doing a composite like radar has is very time consuming, and it's a really nice (and simple to do!) effect. Well, here's my paint anyways!
Radarhead
01-11-2003, 10:24 PM
Your paint looks good but if it's meant to look like metallic paint then you need to place a specular-only light in the scene and use a broad highlight on the material.
Started the interior. I used a super basic material for the seats and default lighting so things would show up better.
Radarhead
01-11-2003, 10:25 PM
Another angle.
Regarding the HDRI I'm using. I've been using several, depending on the render, lighting camera angle etc.

I really like the background for that, the moody sky really compliments the car and makes it stand out .... gives it an attitude. Composition is always as important as a good model, so well done on that side of things too.
What i like about the picture is how it looks like a poster you'd find in a car magazine, stick a couple of staples in the middle, but some text and headers on it and hey presto ..... instant Top Gear magazine poster ..... (or the American equivalent :D)
Have you ever thought about printing your work ?

very nice modelling as usual -5stars! actually i think the giant brake disks work and the mags r pretty kewl even tho they r not overly complicated :D
Radarhead
03-11-2003, 12:25 AM
Thanks for the comments.
The new rims are from a newer model of the F1. Several versions of this car have been built. The materials will be better when I take the time to tweak them. Right now I'm trying to get the modeled components completed. The door panels are now complete. I did shove the brake discs back. The disks on the original car are huge.
0verfl0w: The renders with the sky involves an image of the sky on a plane. Use the align tool to orient the plane to be perpendicular to the camera. As far as getting the right camera angle and shadows it's a subjective thing which involves experimentation. There is no single correct answer. Just find what looks pleasing to the eye.

that really looks beautiful.
the only thing that doesn't seem as perfect as everything else is the material of the wiper.
but that is just my opinion.
and i have another question for you:
i think you used a hdri again for your reflections but you have a gradient background.
i always wanted to know if in brazil you can make an environment for reflections and a different one for the real background?
Radarhead
04-11-2003, 04:52 PM
0verfl0w: I used a map that I painted in PS for that last render for the environment and "yes" with Brazil you can have a different background than the one that reflections are "seeing."

Proffesional work as usual mate...:):) Thumbs up...
Only one question...What`s your method of lining up vertices, to get as smoothed lines as possible? I always find your models edges really smoothed and lined up...I always use numeric values for each vertex, but its a time-consuming method and not ``practical`` .
Radarhead
05-11-2003, 01:12 AM
Thank you LittleJohn. Most vertices I line up visually but there are times that I enter numeric values to correct errors that need extreme precision.

With a carbon fiber frame I would be a little freaked to get in a wreck at any speed. It is like carbon fiber mt bikes. They are great in ridged strength but one it starts to break it just crumbles. Does not bend and absorb. Kinda seems like starping a rocket to your back and jumping on a skate board.

P.S. if you gonna post a wireframe, can you post a low res? High res is not much of a help :)

How do you do detach + extrude and keep the sharp corners after mesh smooth?
nico3d
01-04-2004, 06:33 AM
mengy, I'm not as good as radarhead but I can answer your question. For sharp edges you have to chamfer the edges, Small values will increase the sharpness whereas high value will smooth out the surface.
Or you can use crease as well but the results are different from the chamfered edges.
are there any cheats for Max that you're using Radarhead :p
looking awesome
