View Full Version : Wheels: Post your fancy rims and tires!
I suck at doing wheels, rims so I made this thread. Hopefully I will get better in the future.
This is what I've "experimented" today :D. It is made out of a cone and a cyllinder and it is supposed to be the rim of a Porche 356. It looks like crap.

Oh, Ive seen those. They are soo cool, when the car is moving the wheels dont turn but when it stops the wheels turn.
R2Wrace2win

thinking about it, they probable wouldnt be that hard to make.
They show on the retailer page just the spinner it self. and then the rim behind it. :-D Just search yahoo for "rims spinners"

Morzog,
Thanks, glad you like them. Wires were modeled and rendered
in Strata 3D Pro 3.7 using a 'radial array'. You model one wire, place it in the proper location relative to your hub and rim and then make the desired number of radial array copies. Virtually all 3d model programs will do this as far as I know. Rim and hub were lathed.........Tire treads were also produced by radial array.

another concept rim, thinking about giving this one away :D:D:D:D but i think i finally concord chrome, maybe, think it still doesnt look like it, bu anyway, 3hours to model only because i didnt take any short cuts, its all 1 piece and welded together besides for the little post things........... and i always tend to make the lug holes way too small but its all good
59minutes to render at 800x600 and, it might be too bright, sorry , as you may or may not know, still working on a very dark monitor  :grr:

I had a few people ask me how I modeled my rims, I thought I would post it here so everyone can know. :)
1. Create a cylinder with sides and cap amount you need. (Differet for each rim style, cant remeber how many I did.)
2. converted to a poly and deleted the polys you dont need. You want to create a single spoke.
3. Fix up the remaining polys to look like the screenshot in the attached
4. Array the single spoke and attached/welded. For some funny reason I need to convert to mesh then convert back to poly for the meshsmoothing to work right. I think it has to do with the triangles.
5. All done.

orrrrrrrrrrrrr, you can do it the easy way :P@kingcobra :D if you have a positive number on the bump section, [example: bump: [30]] is the standard setting for it in max..... just make it a negative and it will make the bumps go the other way.... :D
so if the number is possitive, make it negative, if it is negative, make it possitive :D

If he is using Radarheads tread map... which it looks like he is, then he does have the bump right. See image below. if you notice on his tread on the bottom of where the raised part should be, there is a darker shadow than above. Meaning he has the tread correct. If that makes any sense. Although I could be mistaken as well:D

that map is correct...but his tire for some reason is wrong...the top of the tread is sunk in...its reversed.
Siris07
03-11-2003, 11:52 AM
I guess I'm just not seeing the tread as being reversed. I'll just explain what I'm talking about, then ill just leave it as the tread being reversed. On the image below above the red line is the dark part I was talking about that would only be that dark if the tread was raised correctly. I circled it where its the easiest to see so It makes it easier to see what I mean. If noone else sees this then I appologize for posting this. That's it from me then.
I do appologize Korx for drawing on your render but it was the only way I could explain myself:)

Thought idd give this thread a wake up call... Anyway it may not be a radarhead but its about the tire mostly.. crits welcome...
I think you should make the tire bigger/wider and remove the texture or bumpmap it. I also think the tire should be rounded on the sides because it looks a bit like its made of metal how you did it.

The only map on it is the sidewall and yeah I know its crap.......just wanted to see it It would work.
I'm drawing the real one in illustrator that goes with the tread but I can't find a decent pic and I don't have a camera.
I've found the best way to get the face of the rim is to lathe then shapemerge. When I turn it to a poly it creates a horrible mess. Any ideas???
keescopyright
25-11-2003, 04:19 PM
IM not sure if i know what you mean, but my advice is dont use lathe at all... but thats me, if you create a tube with a number of sides dividable by 3 at least so it fits in 360 and convert it to an editable poly... best thing to work with..
but the thread explains quite a lot..

I just used Kennyliu's settings basically. However I did use GI and 2 Omni's.
I've got a 2 screen setup and the brightness of the tire looked good on one of them but too dark on the other. Hows it look to you?

How do you guys create your tread patterns? If you use a bitmap how do yo actually get or create it, I want to do the wheels on my car to see if I can make wheels....
http://www.restorekids.com/wreed/bmw/mansion2.jpg
I also have Kumho Tires and wish to do that tread.....also maybe one day pull off making my car in 3d!

is that your car? is that your house?   ...
ANYway, yea, u can use an image file for a bump or displacement file, or you could use rick stephanies method, its in one of his threads, try the jeep thread.. other than that you could look in the fiat tutorial at www.3dtotal.com, its got something on treads using that method..
Wreed is that your house OMG dude... um can I um have some money :D I will make your wheel for you :D but for real I would go with Blackwolf's suggestion... and once you have the hang of that you can make just about any tire tread you wish....

Yes its my car, hell no thats not my house, a old mansion that is up for walkthrough, I pulled the car up to a no car area quick snapped a ton of pics and then left....
If anyone is from NJ that Mansion is Skylands Gardens in Ringwood NJ....
Its funny that you thought it was my house....I would have a ferrari in front if that was my house, screw the beemer hehe.
Can you link me to the jeep thread?

I just managed to model the wheel i've been trying to do for months!!!!
I posted my progress about 2 pages back. Thought i'd give it a bash cause the wheel i'd just completed had tought me a lot and was near perfect
I started from scratch and did it in like 1 or 2 hrs:D :D .........I'm well 'appy might go back to the bimmer for a bit.
WREED - The best resource I ever found for tires was on www.suurland.com was about half way through the beatle section. Like most things when modeling something in 3d use images from which you can trace in a rough way to get the desired shape

oops, forgot to find the tread, i think you will find wat u r looking for here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=740&perpage=15&highlight=jeep&pagenumber=2) :D good luck
Time to revive this thread with my new Skyline Pennzoil wheel. Got pissed that my blueprints for the Skyline sucked so I enlarged the fenders, made a huge hole in the hood and turned into a Penzoil Skyline GTR (yellow car). The blueprints for that car are very good and I hope my model will be as accurate as possible. I will post some stuff on it soon (I want to finish the first half of it).
Anyway, about the rims. They are kinda accurate. There isn't much reference on the net but oh well. They will look great skinned with stickers on the spoke thingies. I got the Bridgestone Potenza logo's made in black and everything but I don't know how to turn them in a circle to fit on the side of the tire. Any ideas (for Photoshop)?
The rim is splined then poly-edited. No tire texture as the car is a tracked vehicle.
Kujoe
26-12-2003, 01:36 AM
The rim looks great ,are you gooing to model the tire?:)
It is a tracked vehicle, what do you want me to model? Do you see nascar racecars having tire textures?

Ya you don't have to make it a slick tire .You can model a tire and not texture it.

Finally managed to get my M3 rims modelled almost how I want them, what do you guys think?
SNap007be - just render a version with materials and use a noise map to get a little something on the tire then it will look sweet

You got the face shape of the wheel looking good, think the profile needs a little work though.
Post a wire but maybe in its own M3 thread!
And remember the rear wheel is wider than the front and the profile is completely different
When we gonna see a wip of the M3?!?:D

Silver Bullet - They look good, only 4 problems as I see it
1 - Needs to be more rounded
2 - Needs to be more square
3 - the wheel bolt holes should be bigger than the other holes
4 - The inside lip of the rim should be bigger
Sorry for drawing on it but you do it too!:halo:

Raven, I just assign different material to different part of the wheel. I select the green parts and assign them with Green material, select the chrome parts and assign them with Chrome material.
