View Full Version : A Challenge For All In The Forum!
04-11-2003, 12:19 PM
This is a Funny challengue that i want to do with all of you.
It's simply, make only with a teapot of max and a plane, the most realistic scene, only with this two objects. Use textures, lights, radiosity, all that you want, but generate the most realisitic and visual impresive teapot of the millenium. Are you good enough??? waiting for images ;)
04-11-2003, 12:29 PM
One question: is it ok to change the shape of the Teapot with meshedit or anything like that?
Great idea, i will see what i can do
04-11-2003, 12:35 PM
do all you want with only this two objets, but the final scene must be a teapot on a floor, not more.
04-11-2003, 12:36 PM
Wish i was more max savvy :xyz:
04-11-2003, 05:47 PM
no more?? to hard for you? c'mon, let's try!!! ;)
04-11-2003, 05:55 PM
but wait school starts in 30 mins... ill do it this afternoon :D
04-11-2003, 07:55 PM
i like this idea of a challenge, im in if i can find time in between all the homework :p
04-11-2003, 09:35 PM
here is my teapot ;) come on guys, it's not easy as like :D
is post production allowed?
04-11-2003, 10:20 PM
I'm in.I win;)
04-11-2003, 10:54 PM
heres mine i dont know how to fo that fancy stuff so i just used max standards
05-11-2003, 12:56 AM
05-11-2003, 09:34 AM
wow, Great!! xD
but c'mon, more teapots, ina w days we start a votation, to decide who wins
05-11-2003, 12:35 PM
...a beginers attempt
05-11-2003, 02:42 PM
never did a teapot/plane before..but what the heck..here is my first attempt at it.. :p :p
05-11-2003, 02:53 PM
damn, and here I am with Maya, that doesn't have a create teapot button :( or brazil for that matter
05-11-2003, 04:30 PM
I saw a MAYA teapot plugin somewhere. I think it was around $295. The teapot is supposed to come with Maya Unlimited 5. I know, get a programmer to write a custom script!
Are you saying that your creativity is being held back because of software limitations? Come on Daniel don't hold back.

05-11-2003, 11:32 PM
06-11-2003, 12:28 AM
stumbled across this thread while playing around with vray, so i thought id post something...here it is...
06-11-2003, 01:48 AM
johann: it is the default brazil glass material, i just changed the filter color to a veeeery light blue
06-11-2003, 02:18 AM
I completed my teapot this afternoon. The levels have been tweaked a bit in Photoshop.
06-11-2003, 03:22 AM
My max hates teapots! everytime i try and render a scene with a teapot it crashes:crazy: :blah:
crazy nice teapots here tho ;P
//edit// not even when i convert it to editable mesh :ugh:
06-11-2003, 03:31 AM
well i cant get mine to look right but here it is anyway :)
06-11-2003, 03:59 AM
nice one kujoe! i see you are using the kitchen HDRI probe? i am as well! i think kujoe's should win it's great. here's my addition, i'm not so great with texturing...but i tried at least hehe. i call this piece: Simply Tea. lol, i think this contest is pretty cool by the way.
all mine is just wooden texture on the plane with fresnal. the teapot is just brazil chrome. and i used HDRI with the kitchen probe. oh well, here's my not so good teapot :(
here's mine. don't know if i like it or not. might do another one. btw, nice teapots everyon :)
06-11-2003, 06:05 AM
OTD2,I like it .Nice texture;)
All the teapots look great.guess I'm all done.I lose.:D
very nice.see you did your home work,The tut was the ring thing.I did and I learn alot from that .
and thanks. The stove don't look that good, the table looks great, and i was going to do the table.but I said no.:p
this is a great thread. think i'll do a couple more teapot experiments ;)
06-11-2003, 09:44 AM
great works, i'll do another one, better than my other ^^
06-11-2003, 11:05 AM
Not really realistic but i think it hold some atmosphere ^^
06-11-2003, 05:44 PM
heres mine :D
hope u guys like it
06-11-2003, 05:58 PM
looks like a teapot from the future! maybe make the patterns just a little bit more current styles :p
06-11-2003, 06:06 PM
I do like it .Now do the ground texture..;)Maybe use old looking stone walk
07-11-2003, 04:40 PM
Done with Strata 3D Pro 3.9
Radiosity rendered in 2 hours with a glowdome mapped with an HDRI image and moderate DOF.
07-11-2003, 10:01 PM
Did you say 2 hr render.wow I thought 10mins is high..
Great job ,for 2hr it best be,Right?
07-11-2003, 10:18 PM
Thanks for the kind comment. And, yes, 2 hours.
True radiosity does, sadly, require a ton of calculations to be done, versus a raytrace rendering. Scanlines will yield the fastest renderings, but thier actual depiction of real life will be the least accurate.
Strata's radiosity renderer is a true radiosity algorithm, not a hybrid raytrace/scanline, such as the ones used by Max, Lightwave, Maya, etc... so, it's one of the downsides of using it.. the speed price for real high quality stuff is pretty high.
Strata's raytracer is very good, also, and I do work with it alot, as well, but, hands down, nothing beats a image illuminated scene rendered in radiosity.
Hopefully, in future versions, they can improve the rendering speed; I'm a Beta tester, so, I'll jst keep whining till they listen:)
Thanks again! :D
07-11-2003, 10:36 PM
Hi .wow, you must be smart to be a beta tester.I don't even know what that is.:o
I do understand the rest.
Well I vote for you then ,because it looks great and i like looking at it;)
07-11-2003, 11:53 PM
Got bored so spent a few minutes playing with the teapot. One plane, one pot, and only one texture.
Might try this again when I have more time, it was amusing.
08-11-2003, 12:15 AM
Hereīs my contribution, hope you guys like it. I spent a few hours on it to make it look decent. :D
08-11-2003, 02:46 AM
im a little teapot!..hahah...neway nice teapots everyone...i think im gonna make some more..if i have the time
08-11-2003, 09:56 AM
i think the competition was just a teapot and a plane, not a composition.....
Might give it a try someday.......*returns to laziness*
08-11-2003, 10:47 PM
Here's my attempt.
08-11-2003, 11:12 PM
This was a fun task :)
09-11-2003, 01:08 AM
Remember when these were cool for about two weeks back in the 90s? Stare at the image with a deep focus to see the teapot...
09-11-2003, 01:51 AM
Very cool. What program did you use to do that?
09-11-2003, 02:13 AM
for some reason i have no success at all at those hidden pictures merrow...and i really mean absolutely no success... :)
09-11-2003, 02:22 AM
Dragen that was done with a plugin that came with the book "3ds max 5 Bible". As far as I know the developers, Furious Research, have only made this plugin available with the book.
Legato it is all about getting the right focal length. Imagine you are looking through the screen at something behind it.
09-11-2003, 05:37 PM
Here's mine.. :)
09-11-2003, 09:37 PM
Tychoterryn: can u show me how u did that Ceramic material?
16-11-2003, 01:26 AM
In your faces, fellow 3d rap stars
16-11-2003, 12:53 PM
JOhaan: I Made the ceramic material using HDRi. Then I rendered it in brazil.
Here's a short tutorial on how to use HDRI: http://www.splutterfish.com/gabry_hdri_tut_tmp/

16-11-2003, 09:09 PM
here's another teapot! something hazardous boiling inside....
just playing around at the moment...so, there's something more realistic looking to come ;-)
16-11-2003, 11:09 PM
my second one in this thread..used brazil this time
17-11-2003, 01:08 AM
its kinda early..but anyway merry christmas everyone..ho ho ho
17-11-2003, 02:07 AM
I want to eat those.
17-11-2003, 07:39 AM
i have the plane alright...but there are some walls as well....let me know if this is not valid.... :)
17-11-2003, 10:56 AM
gotta be a teapot and a plane dude...i just hope no one's making a teapot sitting on top of a ferrari enzo...
12-12-2003, 12:12 AM
Hereīs another teapot, multible omnilights on and around it :p
12-12-2003, 01:46 AM
whoa this thread's still alive...nice teapot claycreator...like the scratches on it...but the environment kinda wierd...did u forget to change it to spherical? or thats how it is supposed to be?
12-12-2003, 02:00 AM
Lol, itīs supposed to be like that. I wanted to have the reflection of the tiles horizontal to get the effect with the lights I wanted.:)
12-12-2003, 02:55 AM
There's sum hella good teapots in there lol .. i wish i could enter but im only a noob with 3dsmax :(
12-12-2003, 03:05 AM
Hey man anybody can enter you got 3dsmax so just create a teapot automatically with create->standard primitives->teapot, apply a your texture to it and put it on a plane or thin box, thatīs it :)
12-12-2003, 04:45 AM
Nothing more needs to be said. :)
12-12-2003, 09:16 AM
Hope you guys like it.
Merry Christmas, :)
12-12-2003, 07:20 PM
one from the tutorial at splutterfish website..
13-12-2003, 01:04 AM
Here's mine. Hope it's good.
13-12-2003, 06:00 PM
Here's another one from me. I was experimenting with raytrace and after render i get this.
13-12-2003, 06:29 PM
the trick with them 3d pics is too look at them cross eyed and then let your eyes run towrds their normal stance, at some point the repetative print "tricks" your eyes into thinking its 3d... try it..
13-12-2003, 11:00 PM
my teapot + plane :)
(I admit I did some modifying on both plane and pot, but I got inspired by an anime and just HAD to do this :D - if anyone knows shingetsutan tsukihime he might uderstand this pic :))
14-12-2003, 05:38 AM
My turn :)
14-12-2003, 07:18 AM
I need a glass texture for the teapot im making.. can someone tell me how to create it in 3dsmax n gimmie the required info? pwwweeeaase :D
14-12-2003, 09:22 AM
ok lads here's my contribution.. looks ok, was going for a glass texture but had no idea how to make one , found a metal pic n slapped that lil bugger on :D
14-12-2003, 09:23 AM
woops.. forgot to attatch it.. check it now
14-12-2003, 10:45 AM
there is an edit button you know...
glass in max:
diffuse: any colour
transparency: 100% or close
IOR: 1.2 or about that
think thats it...
14-12-2003, 11:21 AM
thanks man.. had a lil mess around :D would need to work on camera angles n lighting to get a killa render
14-12-2003, 01:14 PM
made my teapot into a kettle. oops ill try again, n all that mesh editing for nutin:grr:
14-12-2003, 01:23 PM
ha... told u there was sumtin weird about it.... this lil pic explains ya kettle bro :D
14-12-2003, 01:25 PM

just wondering how you got these textures to glow like this, love this effect and can never seem to pull it off :(
19-12-2003, 03:39 AM
yeah,i love that effect too,but i don't know how to do it. so can anyone explain that to us.
19-12-2003, 01:05 PM
I wasn't going to do this, but what the hey. I dub this "Frosty's Revenge".
BTW, everything was a part of the original teapot (thanks to edit mesh), but the pipe and pipe grounds ended up being a cylinder and flattened sphere (i gotta be honest).
19-12-2003, 04:45 PM
meep meep :)
lol was also bored when doing this so i made it a bit more presentable :P
20-12-2003, 12:18 AM
meh, i had to model mine in maya, anyways, here it is :)
20-12-2003, 01:17 AM
A wood one! :D
This teapot was made of wood!...
21-12-2003, 02:18 AM
Awww, c'mon, no one has anything to say about Frosty up there?
21-12-2003, 03:11 AM
Itīs very......dark  I like the pipe though, nice work there
21-12-2003, 07:14 PM
Its supposed to be dark, hence the name "Frosty's Revenge" :D
21-12-2003, 08:51 PM
frosty's great lol....... and please don't start another 'TOO DARK' fight :D
11-01-2005, 03:38 PM
refloating the post :D
i think, it's really interesting, try hard to make the better teapot!
here is my new try :)
11-01-2005, 05:48 PM
Any possibilty to download the 3dsMax teapot for all those poor Cinema 4d users? :D :???:
12-01-2005, 01:26 AM
hey cool thread, great idea reviving it (is that a word... reviving....?)
come on ppl, show us what you can do ;)
12-01-2005, 06:10 PM
3D Studio Max 7
Maxwellrender (4h rendering)
12-01-2005, 09:58 PM
Same light setup. I have only change the mat.
13-01-2005, 08:53 AM
13-01-2005, 12:20 PM
13-01-2005, 02:43 PM
Amazing Clay!! how u make the smoke? is 3d?
13-01-2005, 06:19 PM
awesome material on that one evil! looks awesome, too bad its only reflecting the white plane :p
Can you tell me how you made the mat?
this 's my version of ur words
13-01-2005, 07:57 PM
inspried: its really simple
its a mental ray material with metal (lume) as its surface
the setting for metal is white surface white reflection 1 reflection
blured reflection spread at 1, 20 samples
and i used a output shader for the camera (glare)
14-01-2005, 08:28 AM
Samuel, itīs just a particle effect: Superspray with spheres in different sizes with a glass material on them. I put so many spheres in the spray so that they pack together, look almost like smoke/steam. :)
26 minutes of rendertime :
