this is a render with smooth (i know about the oval things but im annoyed about the wierd mesh folds

and no time to post the mesh ill post this afternoon :(

Well, i think you did a good job so far, the mesh is good :)
The thing in the last post:
Did you use booleans for the holes? They mess the mesh up, you need to redo the polygons then, they all have to be quadrials ;)
Otherwise try to chanfer the edges, but you need to chamfer ALL edges around the hole (also those, who go diagonal through the "neighbour" polygons)
Otherwise they will mess the mesh more up, than it is at the moment!
Kepp up the great work :)

realistically speaking, the prop should probably be twin bladed, and usually would not be slanted in the direction of the spin near the edges like you have- but if you're just going for style, it doesnt really matter :p
ClayCreator

Nice looking fighter u got there. I remember it from the "post your aircraft" post. :) Sorry to hear about your mesh-problems...personally I hate meshediting,I try to get around doing much of that when Iīm making my models, I usually just combine alot of simple objects together and slap some dark texures on the finished model to hide the seams.lol
Seriously though, I like your design and I think you should make the propellers anyway u wish. But just so u know, 3 bladed propellers worked best on high performance ww2 fighters.
Btw, how do u know how to do a bolean operation(making holes in objects using other objects) in 3ds max 4? Iīm freaking out cause I dunno how to make holes.......I need to make holes!:D:D
Anyway, keep up the good work.
novoAlias
06-11-2003, 03:44 AM
well.. i didnt use booleans, i used the cut tool, an earlier try had it extruded into the engine thing but the problem was the same:( .
ClayCreator I chose 5 blades coz thats wat i think the spitfires mk2 had and i think they wuld look kewl :halo: . maybe i will change them later
Toxic the spin and the blade andgle was a mistake but im not sure if ill keep it or not:roll:
Rinne , im not quite sure wat u meant in that post culd u explain sum more plz :o .

well its the weekend and i finally figured a way to fix the mesh so it looks nice :p, if neone has ne ideas for what shape the vents shuld be just trace over the picture and i wuld be greatfull :D

Yeah, it really looks great, great work :)

08-11-2003, 03:47 AM
good work, I like it a lot.
PS. Mind if I ask where you got the conceps? If they would possibly have more, that's a really funky aircraft, looks like it would be fun to model.

08-11-2003, 04:33 AM
ah, well i guess i can share this with people... :p, i found the http://www.designstudiopress.com/ website while looking at the review for a concept design book at cgnetworks, theres a link off that site to Scott Robertson's (http://www.drawthrough.com/sketches/index.html) site whcih has the concepts im working from and a whole load more :D happy modelling mi computer crashed today so i spent most of the time trying to get it to work instead of modelling :(.. hopefully it will work now :D

been tring to make some instrument panels tho they rnt as smooth as i would lyk, time to use smoothing groups i think... should i make the instruments separate?
c&c welcome...

Your model is looking great man :D Lookforward to see more.
PS. Woah, thanks for the link man, me will be modeling one of those soon! They are awesome.
ClayCreator
08-11-2003, 11:34 PM
Wow, itīs really looking nice and smooth now, good job. :)
It almost looks like an american Hellcat, are you putting guns with a timed firing mechanism on top of the engine too? THatīd be cool! And 3 or 4 or each wing! :D
novoAlias
09-11-2003, 06:01 AM
claycreator, you mean lyk this? yea... timed.. yea ahem :p yea i will when i get some good ref picks fo one :D
novoAlias
09-11-2003, 06:07 AM
or lyk this :p
ClayCreator
09-11-2003, 11:51 PM
Lmao!!! Ummm no thatīs too much :D hehe
And about those timed firing mechanism guns, the mechanism was used to fire the bullets in between the blades so they wouldnt shred them to pieces, lol.:p They dont look any different from the ones u made on the wings I think, they are inside the body so u can only see the barrels.
Btw, three on each wing looks good indeed! And so does the shape of the vents on the engine, nothing to change there.
Good job

yea well... see mi SoD thread for an explanation as to no updates :p
btw which of these looks better?
JQuacker
08-12-2003, 02:10 PM
The closest one.
GJ on this, looks great! Find some real pics of the plane for reference on rivets, etc. Can't wait to see it textured.
chaos_seed
08-12-2003, 04:02 PM
how on earth did you make those holes ! ! !It cant be booleans It keeps geting smoothing bug when i use it that way ! !
I agree with JQuacker the closest one looks best but it depends on what you're looking for cause the middel one looks more like a used on and could be great withe a good texture !
Daniel
08-12-2003, 04:29 PM
been a while man, good stuff. Although the holes don't seem quite hard ennough. Dunno if it works like that in Max, but in Maya, when were about to do booleans, so it's really crisp, we will do a smooth, then the boolean. If you do the boolean then the smooth, it looks like what you have there, not as perfect.
novoAlias
08-12-2003, 11:34 PM
hmm i might use chamfer and find something between the two..Thx for the feedback :D.
Daniel B, i think in Max booleans are pretty much something to stay away from ;p, altho it might kinda work if i smoothed and then booleaned but then u culdnt work with the unsmothed version, nope i think ill stick with mi method, heres a mesh:halo:
chaos_seed
09-12-2003, 08:10 AM
thanks black wolf I use this method too alyhog it can get quite difficult wile working on more complex wire...
keep on going on update !
novoAlias
09-12-2003, 08:35 AM
cheers :D
well, while your waiting for updates, heres some eye candy, ive been working on it for something else, i might make a thread for it soon:halo:
//see if you can guess wat it is ;P
ClayCreator
09-12-2003, 11:27 PM
Wow man, you really put some work into making those holes in the cannons, cool:eek: .Btw isnīt that a welding torch attached to two argon-gas canisters on a trolley?:D
novoAlias
10-12-2003, 03:46 AM
nice guess, ive been told ive done enough with it now so ill be back to modelling shortly :D
btw, the canons took lyk 5 minutes, make 2 sections of tube, cut holes in one, creat polys were needed and array both to desired length, cap the end and voila! done... honestly lyk 5 minutes..
damn just gave away a secret technique! j/k :p
Teryktian
10-12-2003, 04:29 AM
yeah a secret technique...nice fighter, and huge engine.....i like your drawings better, where the fuselage is more beefier ( like the wwwII bombers), but hey it is just my taste, great work....oh, planes are nicely mapped with some hot babes on the sides as decals..hehe
novoAlias
16-12-2003, 08:32 AM
yup thats mi secret teachnique alright... :D i decided to change it slightly from the drawings so it might actually have a chance of flying and look more credable... hopefully i can make it cooler later with modelling and textures and stuff...
hmm i didnt really want to start a whole new thread for this but heres the pretty much finished gas welding thingy without textures (thanks to ef_studios for the edgemap tipoff :p)

i like! how'd u get the bg so it looks like it's on a huge sheet? cos if i have 1 plane ya see black where it ends.. do u just have a 2nd plane vertically?

change the environment color to the same color of your plane (press 8 if u use max to open the environment window) .. and i think BlacWolf uses brazil to render so he must have turned on the ground plane in the Brazil CSG...
btw BlackWolf sweet model...cant wait to see it textured

16-12-2003, 12:49 PM
oh man i wish i could model like this! i really like the model now, this is fantastic! i think the plane is to long ant thin from the original drawing u showed us.
and bolean is a evil thing!
cant wait for a upgrade!
btw: in the cannon stuff, i think the one in the middle is the best!
novoAlias
17-12-2003, 02:14 AM
cheers all :D... i used a plane and changed the angle so u coldnt see the environment but legatos method works just as well :p
also im not exactly following the drawings so some of the proportions will be different altho i might make it shorter/fatter since everyone think it looks better that way :p
just added some wheel wells and some basic wheels, its hard usig this method so i might delete and start again wen i get back to is.. done the rear wheel aswell...

just a question.. wats the best way to do rivets/ weld lines and stuff?
Bullseyepimp
17-12-2003, 06:19 AM
I'm really diggin this model blackwolf! Very nice and clean work :)
And for the rivets... I would probably go for a bump map, but if you are going for extreme realism, model one rivet and duplicate it along where you want the weld line :D
novoAlias
18-12-2003, 01:05 AM
thankyou.. looking at that render and the render i need to post means i can see some stuff that needs work (tho i wuld appreciate it if kind commenters would circle things i might have missed :p.. anyway here i just reorientated sum stuff and mirrored it so you can see more of what it would looklike on the runway :p... the landing gear stuff should be placeholders unless i cant be bothered replaceing them with something better... im going to work on the flaps now so updates soon...

i think theres just a few more details to add before texturing (something i rarely get on to lol) and then hopefully a scene :) hmm an animation sounds like fun :p
maybe an excuse to learn ppl modelling? (pilot)
in the meantime point out things u think i shuld know :p

Hi BlackWolf, your plane is coming along nicely, looks great from above...
Hereīs a texturing tutorial I think you could use : http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/tut_texturemapping.htm

Just made a decent cockpit cover... im having trouble deciding what kind of seats/ kind of interior to make.. i want to make sort of WWII style with some stuff from an F16 cockpit coz it looks cool an stuff.. for texturing im going to try something like the main plane from crimson skies but blue :)
oh yea if u use brazil try setting bucket size to 16 and order to random, its fun!
