I've been working on this car on and off for serveral months now. I keep getting stuck and leaving it for a while.

I've come back to it this time and really want to get the wheels right.
I've tried every modeling method but when it comes to ectruding the face it gets messy. The smoothest and most accurate face of the wheel came by lathing the basic shape and using shapemerge to cut out the gaps. This was great buy when i convert it to a mesh to extrute it becomes a complete mess.

It was all spline modeled

Any coments welcome I can see most of the errors just not got round to fixing them (or don't know how)

This is the most complete model of the wheel it was spline modeled then converted to mesh and extruded

looks good mate.....the only thing with wheels for me is the texture makes it a little dull.....which differs from the rest of the car.

Looks like those months have paid off mate :) looks very nice indeed I did spot these errors,
#1 needs to be tighter together
#2 need to tighten to make the gap dissapear

Hey,

Overall, a very nice car, good curves etc. Here are a few crits
(I think i take the title as unoffical bmw crit guy so these are detailed crits)

1. Little one here, just a join problem
2. take a look, might be the angle but it looks strange
3. to much space .. close it up
4. looks like it curves in to much (might be angle)
5. looks like the wheel could come out a bit
6. look at reference shots .. needs to more of a angle
7. strange indent .. does not look like its supposted to be there.

Rims are great, just a little more shine to them and they be fine.

Lastly sorry for drawing on your car.

Thanks for the crts so far, quick responce I had it on another forum had had less replys in 48hrs

The car is still in 2 parts and not connected down the middle.
I used some blueprints off the suurland site and have already made the bonnet bulge higher than them will try it higher still though.

The wheels work quite well from looking straight on but the profile is way off and I can't get a decent edge on the spokes.

Attached is an earlier render........I'm not too good at lighting, rendering and materials as you can see

Let me guess - CGTalk, were you'd get more conversation from a dead rat that had its mouth stapled together when it was alive. I know the feeling

The material looks ok to me :) get the interior done and this will be finnished I think mate :)

This is the wheel face after the the lathe and shapemerge. Basically anything I do after this makes a mess..........any ideas???

I think the rims look fine ... maybe a dulled down Brazil Chrome material would do ? For the yellow are above, maybe change the tire texture to a dull black, just take a defualt material and make it black and see what that looks like.

cant see why it would make a mess, do you chamfer those inside edges then extrude them back? nice looking model by the way, i like the paint :D

@Silver Bullet........My blueprints aren't very good........recently I found this pdf that contains lots of images of the M3 and the last page is the blueprints at a very, very high quality

http://www.bmw.com/generic/com/en/products/automobiles/showroom/mseries/m3/download/_pdf/m3_catalogue1.pdf

Who's the wheel genious on this forum cause I want these rims to be absolutely perfect. I spent ages modeling the exact tire that comes with this car and I want beautiful Rims to set it off!!!

SWEEEEEET!!!!

I really like it. What was it rendered in??

some suggestions though. I think you should model the headlights......and model the interior so that you can have some of it showing through the windshield.

3Dway'OLife
16-02-2004, 03:06 PM
thanks!!!

rendered with 3 omnis and scanline

Just threw the headlights inside in from the old model. (that bit was ok)

Will be modeling everthing, maybe even the engine

Thanks for the praise!!!

that line down the side seems deeper when i move the lights i'm not sure whether to change it or not

any more crits?

anyone know why in mental ray my plain dome with a standard material does this?

Hey,

Hate to draw on such a nice car ... but as they say pictures are worth a thousand words :)

1. Need to extend the top edge over this little area
2. Little bit of a break, maybe just the light
3. Little to much space between
4. Adding in wheel weels be a easy fixed up

Overall, looking great, i am working on my M3 CSL but its not even close to done.

Thanks guys

I think there is something wrong with the rear wing area, just been playing with lighting and materials as i'm really crap at them.

The gaps around the windows look too large I know but there are window rubbers to go in there,

Any other errors other than those already said???

Started work on the interior so shouldn't be too long

Thanks

Did another few renders and really liked this one.

Its annoying, everytime I do a render I find something else that looks wrong!!!

That last one is a beautiful render. Was it also with mental ray? Its a very sharp and clear image.
Clean modeling man.

Scott99 - oh yeah I knew it looked familiar, you mean that B&W ad saying even getting lost is fun

I've been messing around with the materials but don't really know how to create what i want can someone help?!?

I want this material, and will be rendered in mental ray

the closest thing i can think of is... brazil chrome mat with glossy reflection... I can't get max 6 to boot up with mental ray so i was forced to remove the mental ray plugin and use brazil

Thanks mengy but i'm using mental ray. Its got a blur setting for metal (lume) material but i can't get it to work

Started on the interior here's so far

hmmm what should I say... other than NICE... better than mine (check it out, link is below)
I do think that the side line should be deaper, and yes I know how hard that will be, because I had to fix mine eeek (the door seems get all messed up)
also you add another cut to your seems, they look too rounded..
some one told me the rule of three, three cuts all about .01 apart make a really crisp edge...
looking very nice tho.. keep it up one day we will both finish these and I should send you my file to have you render them side by side and we can have a look-c that would be cool :D (you get to render because you computer is um kind of nice aye)

Thanks for the comments man i'll ave a lil look at your work in a mo.

I'm pretty sure i did make the crease bigger, can't remember as i left this model alone for a while to do some architectural work. I do think a lot of the car models you see the edges are far too sharp.

Attached is the latest render i have.

I wanna get the model on the same level as the z4 of Radu3

Nice idea bout the comparison

Thanks Kujoe, they were a battle to model but learnt a lot from em..............still trying to get the material right on them

Lil update been tweaking the rear quarter pannel, cutting the tail lights and working on the side windows. Still lots to do just keeping yall up to date

hey guy's i've not been on here for ages and totally forgot about this model.

I want to continue it but am still stuck on the tailights they have a lot of geometry but this would kill my render times.

Has anyone had any luck with max 7's new normal mapping in mental ray?
or is there anything like the vray displacement map in mental ray?

cheers
