Ok starting up a new project. All this holiday stuff inspired me to want to make a peice for christmas. So why not scrooge.

I'm taking my time with this one. This is just the start still gathering ref and sketching what the style will be. I'm leaning toward a cartoony type but it will probly be a mix. The pose is pretty much what I want but I may exagerate a bit more. I'll be starting hopefully this weekend, if not sooner. questions comments always welcome....heck encouraged.:D

Goodluck goat buddy! It looks like a good project according with the holyday spirit. Or maybe spirits? :D

very stylized, but perhaps not very "humbug-ish" :D . unless you're not going for the traditional scrooge look

i like it tho! ;)

thanks guys.

I'm kinda trying to go for a scared look when he first hears jacob marly. but I'm still working on the ref of the face so it's a ways to go. i'll post more as I go! thanks for the comments guys!:D

Great idea for a project. I'm liking the bottom two concepts the best myself. But then again, I always love the cartoonish look. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

hehe ok, I've never heard of him before so I was just comparing the model with your scetches. It looks great anyway

Daniel
16-12-2003, 10:18 PM
I like the skinny version. But he looks too buff, you know, he looks strong. He needs to look more withered and defensless. I liked your first concepts, not saying it's bad or anything, just my opinion. :)

goat
16-12-2003, 10:45 PM
thanks man. he looks this way (mad) But I am goig to totaly change his expression. i did thisexpression in like 2 min. I kinda mixed all the sketches together and just modeled away. But the guy in the middle and to the right is the one it most looks like in the sketches. thanks for the crit though. i'll make him more withered

The thing I love about your work Goat, is that you have a style that is very specific to you. Keep it going, and thou shall be a legend good sir! Hurrah!

Avatar-3DT
16-12-2003, 11:30 PM
Yeah, I already can see it: GOAT THE LEGEND!:p
Jusk kidding man, your work looks great so far. Maybe you could work that nose more, in your sketches looks very good. Maybe make it thinner at his base and really big and round near the nostrils. I saw you already did some adjusments but maybe you'll try my sugestion. And moving the mouth higher a little bit could help his personality.
As for the scared face, you could make the eyes bigger so the iris will touch the lower eyelid but will be far from the upper eyelead (ok, that sounds kindda confusing).
Did you thought for the final scene to model a ghost behind him?

goat
17-12-2003, 03:08 AM
Legend?! yo guys have gone plum crazy. I'm a small fish in a big sea gents. you are waaay to kind. (head swells) thanks guys for the kind words. This is the first time in a loong time I've been able to just focus on "my stuff" without any distractions. So i'm trying to reach the next level. ya know what I mean. anyways.

Monte-I'm going to keep trying my man. james(Kuman) is proof of what hard work can do. Very inspirational work that punk.

Avatar-i made some of those changes. As far as the scared face. I'll cross that bridge when i'm done modeling him. I'll keep it in mind when the time comes.I think a may put death behind him or jacob marly. not sure. may just be a window and his bed.

:D

thanks agian guys for the crit guys. always helps.

update.

That character looks nothing like your concept artwork, which I thought was great. Have you drawn multiple angles of the character? Do you use polygon modeling?

17-12-2003, 01:18 PM
heyyy nice start!!!

LOUcifer
17-12-2003, 02:09 PM
Hey man great start! the wrinkles and creases are done quite nicely. I was thinking that maybe he would look alot older and withered with jowels, you know, those flaps of skin that droop from the chhek almost past the chin? I thik the key to old people is loose skin, which I'm sure isn't easy to model. Excellect work!

Drew Carey
17-12-2003, 03:22 PM
Very good start man, and I can't see anything really wrong with the model itself, though I'd love to see a wire.
However, in none of the sketches are his ears so prominent, and I think that's a shame, as they could use to be smaller - more similar to the sketches. I also think he's frowning a tad too extremely but that can be fixed with morph targets and shouldn't be an issue at this stage of the project.
Keep it up.

goat
17-12-2003, 06:30 PM
Hey guys thanks for the crits.

Littlefish- well on the first page I used one of those faces for the model. the face in the middle right. I'll post a side by side later tonight. I think they look the same, accept a couple sugestion and changes along the way. the sketch above is purly for the pose I will end up using.Basiclly I just used the drawings you see. no other angles. oh I did make a side veiw(not posted). I use poly modeling yes. and max 5.:D

p0lym0rph- thanks brutha

Lou- thanks Well I was thinking jowels but I didn't want to make him look tooo old. but I could probly use a little bit of sag in there. I'll do some tests.

Drew- thanks man. Well the ear thing is a funny story. I used my ears for ref and well they are large. you are totally right about them. I like how they look all big and goofy but it dosen't fit the character. thanks for the spot man. It will be fixed. as far as the face your right. it's still early on the face. I will change that up when I'm done with everything. I'll probly post a couple of expression see what you guys think.

ok ok I'm blabbering a bit much. I think i'm also going to widen his face a bit. someone else thought his face was too thin. whatda think guys/gals.

thanks for all the feed back it sure does help.:D

Scrooge looks better now with one, tinny exeption: the chin! Is way too splited, way to up. If you want a split chin reference search some photos with Kirk Douglas. He was the most famouse split chin actor.

sarN
17-12-2003, 11:39 PM
lol another big nose haha :D
i think he looks good, with a beard and and old pale texture hell fit hte part great :D
cant wait for more goat

LittleFish
18-12-2003, 03:51 AM
Would old be better? I think of Scrooge as an old man, barely able to get about and slight hunched (as in your pose), and he doesn't even have time to spen his hoarded gold.

The face doesn't all look too thin. I think that it's just the cheeks and chin. One of the differences that I see between the model and the concept is that the lower half of the face is thinner, and the bone structure of the head doesn't seem quite right. The other difference is the eyes. The eyes have a cold, piercing stare, whereas in the concept, they are watching something in their own world. His eyes in the concept seem dim (poor eyesight, hence glasses), and I don't know if his eyes should be so bold in the model.

The front view looks pretty good, but its talent is offset by an inaccurate side view. Try doing a concept of the side view and modeling off of that (?). The eyes are too high (and the nose), but the nose looks great.

The wrinkles are probably defined too much in the wrong places. His face has a slight appearance of stretched plastic clay.

Avatar- thanks man. I kinda over looked the chin. I took the split out of the chin. I may go back and put it in. not sure yet. but good call. thanks

sarn- ya I love those big noses. But i promise to make a small one with the next project!:D thanks

littlefish- ok I lowwer the eye a bit. fixed the wrinkles that I thik made it less clayish. also worked on the side veiw as well. As far as the concept expressions, well I 'm going to make a morph for that. after the head is made I will work a couple of the expressions. I don't like modeling the expression first. so i due time I will achive that look that he has.:D thanks for the crit.

Solidarity- thanks man. glad you dig it. :o

Why hate shagfur? Is soooo easy! Just select the faces, give them an ID number, then... Well, but maybe you do not need this explaining! If you do, pm me and I will explain you everything. The results of shagfur can be amazing, believe me! Here is an example. Sorry for the intrusion, feel free to erase the picture at any time.

Goat. Awsome. I see a bit of the rock creature in him. I love the sketchs. I think the model have a lot of potencial. The texture looks to tan. He is a hermit and should be white as a ghost.

Awsome! I agree 'tho his skin is too dark. It should be much paler with liver stains and maybe a bold there. Tha wrinckles are fantastic! You should play around with shag. Lower the vectors power, the sidewiskers are leaning to much. And lower the desity also. In the light rollout pick composite shadow and in the composite shadow parameters add to the list hair shadows. The shader looks good. The hair is too thick and the clumping is to high. But for now is looking impresive. I hope you feel well. A happy new year to you buddy!

The wrinkles around the cheek look like strechmarks, and you might have too much bump on the lips, maybe. You are getting so much better at texturing!I would also like to see a render with different lighting...a little dark for me. This is definately you best model yet! Good stuff

I see you used 4 shag volumetrics. You could use just two. Asign an Id number to the faces you want to grow hair on and then, in "Faces" from Shag parameters rollout, select "Asign to ID" and type the number. And I would make the eyebrows black or grey.

Something bothers me about how the color of the nose completely changes form a pink to a flesh color. Maybe moe of a transition. That pink color is really powerfull. It is the first thing I look at. On the posative side, your tex's are lookin' incredibly realistic!! Sweet Job!

one thing about the hair, maybe you can try adding randomnes to it, it looks to uniform imo.

Avatar-3DT
14-01-2004, 12:32 AM
If you want to add some randomnes to the hair look near "orientation" (XYZ). Check "shading bezier" and the other one above. More time to render but better results. Give image quality 6. Use "clumping" and "curliness" (or however its called, I don't remember exacly but is near the "lenght" panel.
I would invert the bump map on the chin to stick out instead of in.

The bump maps look real good. I like that you took them down a noch on the lips...alot better. I am still not feelin' the cap too much, the end looks too streched and thin, like clay or something, and I think the skin tone should have a little more color, he may be a cold person, but blood still runs through his body. I know you have little time to work on him,but he is an excellent model, so you should still make time.

Hey, nice job. Yeah, the Bump seems a bit loud, but very well done. I like his color. It separates his skin from his eyes, which is important.

Not sure if you did this on purpose, buit while his face seems angry (his brow, jawline, etc.) his eyes seem sad...which we all know was Scrooge's problem in the first place, lol.

Good job. I would add a belmish or two, though.

Wow, I look at this guy and I creep out a bit! Looking great! A few crits 'tho:
The veins in the eye should have a lower self-lumination and a more red color. As for the hair color you can adjust this from the Shag hair color parameter (tip/ base - they are grey as default), either by selecting the hair and asigning a material from material library. Shag has a special shader for hair and you can found it in matlib shader rollout. Tweak it good and you can achieve a nice effect. But before I advice you to back up your scene:D
Keep up the good work!

Great look you finally got. The only thing still bothering me is that the bump feels too much around his eyes and cheeks, but tahts my personal opinion of course. Otherwise it really is great work.
