View Full Version : Character: Scrooge
Ok starting up a new project. All this holiday stuff inspired me to want to make a peice for christmas. So why not scrooge.
I'm taking my time with this one. This is just the start still gathering ref and sketching what the style will be. I'm leaning toward a cartoony type but it will probly be a mix. The pose is pretty much what I want but I may exagerate a bit more. I'll be starting hopefully this weekend, if not sooner. questions comments always welcome....heck encouraged.:D
11-12-2003, 11:54 PM
Goodluck goat buddy! It looks like a good project according with the holyday spirit. Or maybe spirits? :D
11-12-2003, 11:58 PM
very stylized, but perhaps not very "humbug-ish" :D . unless you're not going for the traditional scrooge look
i like it tho! ;)
I'm kinda trying to go for a scared look when he first hears jacob marly. but I'm still working on the ref of the face so it's a ways to go. i'll post more as I go! thanks for the comments guys!:D
12-12-2003, 05:06 AM
awesome idea, Scrooge is my all time favorite christmas carol, I look forward to seeing where you'll go with this.
12-12-2003, 02:15 PM
I like the concept, I look forward to see it in 3d
12-12-2003, 02:34 PM
Great idea for a project. I'm liking the bottom two concepts the best myself. But then again, I always love the cartoonish look. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
thanks for the incouragment guys. here is an update. i also started a sculpt him in sculpy. i'll post that later . not to much done on th sculpture. just the base. ok Q&C always welcome/:D
l update ing to go with a thinner head. what da ya think?
It looks great although he looks to angry...
scrooge wasn't a happy man you know. bahh humbug:D
hehe ok, I've never heard of him before so I was just comparing the model with your scetches. It looks great anyway
16-12-2003, 10:18 PM
I like the skinny version. But he looks too buff, you know, he looks strong. He needs to look more withered and defensless. I liked your first concepts, not saying it's bad or anything, just my opinion. :)
thanks man. he looks this way (mad) But I am goig to totaly change his expression. i did thisexpression in like 2 min. I kinda mixed all the sketches together and just modeled away. But the guy in the middle and to the right is the one it most looks like in the sketches. thanks for the crit though. i'll make him more withered
this is the pose i will end up with.
16-12-2003, 11:15 PM
The thing I love about your work Goat, is that you have a style that is very specific to you. Keep it going, and thou shall be a legend good sir! Hurrah!
16-12-2003, 11:30 PM
Yeah, I already can see it: GOAT THE LEGEND!:p
Jusk kidding man, your work looks great so far. Maybe you could work that nose more, in your sketches looks very good. Maybe make it thinner at his base and really big and round near the nostrils. I saw you already did some adjusments but maybe you'll try my sugestion. And moving the mouth higher a little bit could help his personality.
As for the scared face, you could make the eyes bigger so the iris will touch the lower eyelid but will be far from the upper eyelead (ok, that sounds kindda confusing).
Did you thought for the final scene to model a ghost behind him?
Legend?! yo guys have gone plum crazy. I'm a small fish in a big sea gents. you are waaay to kind. (head swells) thanks guys for the kind words. This is the first time in a loong time I've been able to just focus on "my stuff" without any distractions. So i'm trying to reach the next level. ya know what I mean. anyways.
Monte-I'm going to keep trying my man. james(Kuman) is proof of what hard work can do. Very inspirational work that punk.
Avatar-i made some of those changes. As far as the scared face. I'll cross that bridge when i'm done modeling him. I'll keep it in mind when the time comes.I think a may put death behind him or jacob marly. not sure. may just be a window and his bed.
thanks agian guys for the crit guys. always helps.
17-12-2003, 07:27 AM
That character looks nothing like your concept artwork, which I thought was great. Have you drawn multiple angles of the character? Do you use polygon modeling?
17-12-2003, 01:18 PM
heyyy nice start!!!
17-12-2003, 02:09 PM
Hey man great start! the wrinkles and creases are done quite nicely. I was thinking that maybe he would look alot older and withered with jowels, you know, those flaps of skin that droop from the chhek almost past the chin? I thik the key to old people is loose skin, which I'm sure isn't easy to model. Excellect work!
17-12-2003, 03:22 PM
Very good start man, and I can't see anything really wrong with the model itself, though I'd love to see a wire.
However, in none of the sketches are his ears so prominent, and I think that's a shame, as they could use to be smaller - more similar to the sketches. I also think he's frowning a tad too extremely but that can be fixed with morph targets and shouldn't be an issue at this stage of the project.
Keep it up.
Hey guys thanks for the crits.
Littlefish- well on the first page I used one of those faces for the model. the face in the middle right. I'll post a side by side later tonight. I think they look the same, accept a couple sugestion and changes along the way. the sketch above is purly for the pose I will end up using.Basiclly I just used the drawings you see. no other angles. oh I did make a side veiw(not posted). I use poly modeling yes. and max 5.:D
p0lym0rph- thanks brutha
Lou- thanks Well I was thinking jowels but I didn't want to make him look tooo old. but I could probly use a little bit of sag in there. I'll do some tests.
Drew- thanks man. Well the ear thing is a funny story. I used my ears for ref and well they are large. you are totally right about them. I like how they look all big and goofy but it dosen't fit the character. thanks for the spot man. It will be fixed. as far as the face your right. it's still early on the face. I will change that up when I'm done with everything. I'll probly post a couple of expression see what you guys think.
ok ok I'm blabbering a bit much. I think i'm also going to widen his face a bit. someone else thought his face was too thin. whatda think guys/gals.
thanks for all the feed back it sure does help.:D
17-12-2003, 10:20 PM
Scrooge looks better now with one, tinny exeption: the chin! Is way too splited, way to up. If you want a split chin reference search some photos with Kirk Douglas. He was the most famouse split chin actor.
lol another big nose haha :D
i think he looks good, with a beard and and old pale texture hell fit hte part great :D
cant wait for more goat
18-12-2003, 03:51 AM
Would old be better? I think of Scrooge as an old man, barely able to get about and slight hunched (as in your pose), and he doesn't even have time to spen his hoarded gold.
The face doesn't all look too thin. I think that it's just the cheeks and chin. One of the differences that I see between the model and the concept is that the lower half of the face is thinner, and the bone structure of the head doesn't seem quite right. The other difference is the eyes. The eyes have a cold, piercing stare, whereas in the concept, they are watching something in their own world. His eyes in the concept seem dim (poor eyesight, hence glasses), and I don't know if his eyes should be so bold in the model.
The front view looks pretty good, but its talent is offset by an inaccurate side view. Try doing a concept of the side view and modeling off of that (?). The eyes are too high (and the nose), but the nose looks great.
The wrinkles are probably defined too much in the wrong places. His face has a slight appearance of stretched plastic clay.

Nice work so far, mate.
Thanks for the crits guys.
Avatar- thanks man. I kinda over looked the chin. I took the split out of the chin. I may go back and put it in. not sure yet. but good call. thanks
sarn- ya I love those big noses. But i promise to make a small one with the next project!:D thanks
littlefish- ok I lowwer the eye a bit. fixed the wrinkles that I thik made it less clayish. also worked on the side veiw as well. As far as the concept expressions, well I 'm going to make a morph for that. after the head is made I will work a couple of the expressions. I don't like modeling the expression first. so i due time I will achive that look that he has.:D thanks for the crit.
Solidarity- thanks man. glad you dig it. :o
got an update and a test of hair placement with photoshop. I don't know if I will model the hair or go with shag. I hate shag. but we'll see. Hope I covred everything. thanks agian guys!!
18-12-2003, 11:53 PM
Why hate shagfur? Is soooo easy! Just select the faces, give them an ID number, then... Well, but maybe you do not need this explaining! If you do, pm me and I will explain you everything. The results of shagfur can be amazing, believe me! Here is an example. Sorry for the intrusion, feel free to erase the picture at any time.
goat, its a great character :D personaly i like the concept sketch cartoony look better than your more realistic model (don't get me wrong the model looks awesome)
Avatar your model is very cool :D does he have his own thread?
19-12-2003, 10:27 PM
No, I'll post it just to the end to get help adjusting the lights.
As for goat I think he is on the way to creat a very cool scene, he need only some time to work more so that his scene will be ready till xmas.
he guys. Not feeling very good as of late. think i'm coming down with the flu. :blah:right before the holiday too! so havn't been able to do much. trying to get the textures going. they are still early. ok i'm aiming for mon to have it finished or darn close(health cooperating).
avatar ya i'm going to end up using shag fur. although I may PM about the shader. thanks man.
24-12-2003, 02:34 AM
very cool, but he has more of a creepy semi realistic look, he doesn't illicit the warm fuzzy cartoony feeling of childhood I usually get from the original christmas carol.
24-12-2003, 05:15 AM
Damb, avatar. that thing creeps meout just like the tel tubees.
Goat. Awsome. I see a bit of the rock creature in him. I love the sketchs. I think the model have a lot of potencial. The texture looks to tan. He is a hermit and should be white as a ghost.
24-12-2003, 09:42 AM
Great texutre work ! The mesh was already great but the texutring is awsome ! ! !I love it some kind of toony realistic great work !
great work on the texturing. he looks a lot more cartoony now with this expression, thats cool :)
looks good, but for a wiry old man, i thought he would be a little paler :D
hey guys thanks for the replies and kind words. working on all that was suggested. sorry for not relying to all. I try tomorrow. update
31-12-2003, 12:09 AM
Awsome! I agree 'tho his skin is too dark. It should be much paler with liver stains and maybe a bold there. Tha wrinckles are fantastic! You should play around with shag. Lower the vectors power, the sidewiskers are leaning to much. And lower the desity also. In the light rollout pick composite shadow and in the composite shadow parameters add to the list hair shadows. The shader looks good. The hair is too thick and the clumping is to high. But for now is looking impresive. I hope you feel well. A happy new year to you buddy!
31-12-2003, 12:31 AM
He looks good. His lips look painful
31-12-2003, 12:32 AM
Kickhead man,he's so scary and angry. I luv your works.
31-12-2003, 12:34 AM
I love what you've done with this. Really nice work. He has a lot of character.
31-12-2003, 08:13 AM
what happened to him, got taken by the santa 's fever ?
Really great those hair aren't 3D are they photoshop adding ?
Great job !
31-12-2003, 04:11 PM
The wrinkles around the cheek look like strechmarks, and you might have too much bump on the lips, maybe. You are getting so much better at texturing!I would also like to see a render with different lighting...a little dark for me. This is definately you best model yet! Good stuff
looking very good, :)
I agree with LOUcifer that the wrinkles bump around the cheek dont look as good as the other parts of the texture.
did you use shag hair?
01-01-2004, 02:03 PM
looks great goat, i love the shader on the hat, it looks so soft lol
the hair looks really good too
and of course the model :D
01-01-2004, 05:44 PM
nice work on this guy...the texture is very nice and i like the eyes, they add character to him. I do have one request that for the next render could you make it a little brighter so we can get a better look at this master piece.
01-01-2004, 08:01 PM
yeah it's coming along very nice, but his skin looks way too dark, huge contrast to his hair
Hey guys thanks fpor all the great replies.been kinda busy as of late. but i will have some updates this weekend at some point. I also attached a brighter veiw. happy new year everyone!
Avatar- Thanks for the tips on Shag. I will try out what you said. Still new to shag. need more practice with it. I will also make him paler and throw on those liver spots. thanks man!
Rick. thanks man. I wanted to get a look like they where all chappered and old. still need to work on the colors and bump a bit more though. :D
Drizzt- thanks brutha!
ColeKindred- glad you like it man.
chaos_seed- thanks man. nope the hair is shag hair. I still need to get the ang of that plugin...but i'm getting there.
Lou-Strechmarks huh? Well I don't know if i think they look like strechmarks but i will address them and make them a bit more organic. get a little more ref i will. thanks for the kind word bro!
ido- i'm on it about those wrinkles. and yup shag hair it is.
Mister_.d.- thanks man! still working them though
sarn- thanks man. yathe hat shadder still has a way to go. it's just a bump and some fall off that i'm still tweeking.:D
bradjames- request granted brighter render below. thanks
daneil- i shall lighten up his skin. thanks for the crit.
Ok thanks for all the crits/help/incouragment guys. I will have another round of updates this weekend. thanks.

03-01-2004, 11:59 PM
I see you used 4 shag volumetrics. You could use just two. Asign an Id number to the faces you want to grow hair on and then, in "Faces" from Shag parameters rollout, select "Asign to ID" and type the number. And I would make the eyebrows black or grey.
Thanks avatar. ya i was trying omethng diffwith seperate ids. waanted to try things out. mat are a pain in the a$$ for me and shag. but i'll get it. thanks man! ihould have an update tonight.
04-01-2004, 11:20 PM
No problem bud, I'm glad to lend a helping hand if I can.;)
05-01-2004, 02:04 AM
Haha! I love this character :D . This looks great. Some viens in his eye would make me laugh alot more. great work.
11-01-2004, 11:43 PM
Something bothers me about how the color of the nose completely changes form a pink to a flesh color. Maybe moe of a transition. That pink color is really powerfull. It is the first thing I look at. On the posative side, your tex's are lookin' incredibly realistic!! Sweet Job!
12-01-2004, 07:18 AM
Hi good wrok buddy..........
a small suggestion...i think the contours a little troublesome
ur curves r horizontal n vetical.......it seems u have used box modellin or somethin...........
it is not like the way actual face curves flow.........
rest is fine...........model looks fine......................
hey guyz c my work on this forum too.......
12-01-2004, 07:21 AM
Hi Buddy now ur character looks real cool.........love it.............
12-01-2004, 07:55 AM
pretty cool still needs somthing to finish the hat but looks great already ! !maybe a bit of hair tweaking to !
Great work with shag hair (Hate this things so hard to make it look right!)
Keep it up ! !
Been reallly busy as of late. well here is an update. getting pretty close to finishing it. i am only going make the head possibly a scarf.. still need to work on the eyes. and the hat a bit more too. thanks for the crits and kind works fellas. more soon.
looks very good goat :)
one thing about the hair, maybe you can try adding randomnes to it, it looks to uniform imo.
14-01-2004, 12:32 AM
If you want to add some randomnes to the hair look near "orientation" (XYZ). Check "shading bezier" and the other one above. More time to render but better results. Give image quality 6. Use "clumping" and "curliness" (or however its called, I don't remember exacly but is near the "lenght" panel.
I would invert the bump map on the chin to stick out instead of in.
14-01-2004, 12:39 AM
this is very nice work, he has good character, keep it up :D
14-01-2004, 06:23 AM
Wow, looks great;) But I agree what avatar said about the hair too, very nice though
14-01-2004, 11:43 AM
ohhhhhhhh:( Don'(t like the point end of the hat ! ! !
Wyh not make it a bit more round not l'ike chtroumf but with a more spherical looks .Other<ise great work expression 's perfect ! !
14-01-2004, 03:21 PM
lol he will most likely understand more if you say to put the end of the hat like a Smurf's, chtroumf is in french, lol
thanks guys for all the comments crits.
ido- ya still got some learning to do with shag. but i'll work on it. thanks man
Avatar- hey man thank a freaking ton on the advice with shag. you've helped a lot. i am now starting to get the hang of it. but still got a while before i get good with it. any info you throw at me about shag the better my man. hats off to ya! :D As far as the chin the bump is in but i guess it's not coming off like that. i'll fix it thanks.
BlackWolf - thanks man.
rubberduck- cool i'm on it.
chaos_seed- well the hat is going to have a tassle at the end of it. so you won't see the point. when i pot it if it looks like crap i'll see what it looks like with your sugestions. thanks man.
DanielB - well i think I answered that with chaos' question. thanks
thanks guys. more soon. depending on how work treats me i may be busy. rock on.
14-01-2004, 05:07 PM
15-01-2004, 12:05 AM
Glad my advise helped you. I had to learned the hard way so i don't wish to anyone else to pass through the red clouds of fury I passed through learning all this. If there's anyway I can help just tell me. You're doing a great job here!
15-01-2004, 08:45 PM
I really like this character. Very cool.
15-01-2004, 09:21 PM
hmm, it looks like he's made out of wood? the crack are to "woody" and the color is also a bit "woody" you should definatly fix the wrinkles, they surely make him look like a wood character. And the hair makes him look like a brush :P
Anyways, very good job!
15-01-2004, 09:51 PM
hes looking good really good, but just like his rubber or something.. maybe some red colour on his face would make him alive :)
15-01-2004, 09:57 PM
Looks excellent. Great expression in this model. The only thing I would change is make the hair a little unneven, to make it look more natural.
well heres an update it's been a while but I have not had much time to work on him. I"m playing with him in post. we'll see how much more i can get to try and finish him. thanks for all the coments!! they are always welcome.
04-02-2004, 10:54 PM
04-02-2004, 11:36 PM
one little thing though: the colour of his hair should differ from the fur on that hat of his ;)
05-02-2004, 12:05 AM
lovely texture...will u do the body?
very cool goat :), looks awesome
05-02-2004, 02:09 AM
The bump maps look real good. I like that you took them down a noch on the lips...alot better. I am still not feelin' the cap too much, the end looks too streched and thin, like clay or something, and I think the skin tone should have a little more color, he may be a cold person, but blood still runs through his body. I know you have little time to work on him,but he is an excellent model, so you should still make time.
05-02-2004, 04:22 AM
Looks nice. The bump is well painted but lower its strenght it feels like its way too hard. Aotherwise the models great.:)
05-02-2004, 10:32 AM
Hey, nice job. Yeah, the Bump seems a bit loud, but very well done. I like his color. It separates his skin from his eyes, which is important.
Not sure if you did this on purpose, buit while his face seems angry (his brow, jawline, etc.) his eyes seem sad...which we all know was Scrooge's problem in the first place, lol.
Good job. I would add a belmish or two, though.
05-02-2004, 02:18 PM
Wow, I look at this guy and I creep out a bit! Looking great! A few crits 'tho:
The veins in the eye should have a lower self-lumination and a more red color. As for the hair color you can adjust this from the Shag hair color parameter (tip/ base - they are grey as default), either by selecting the hair and asigning a material from material library. Shag has a special shader for hair and you can found it in matlib shader rollout. Tweak it good and you can achieve a nice effect. But before I advice you to back up your scene:D
Keep up the good work!
05-02-2004, 02:22 PM
Sorry, just clicked the submit button twice:roll:
05-02-2004, 02:29 PM
Is there anywhere that someone might be able to get an older version of Shag: Fur for free or cheap? I have a plugin called Hair, but it doesn't work so great. Lots of bugs.
nothing to say! impressive details in the textures, really great character!!
Hey guys thanks for all the relpies!!!! I hope to finish this guy sometime soon. Christmas has been over for a bit now.
rjsmal- thanks man!
Chris 3dt- thanks man. good call. i didn't even notice. thats what posting thses things are for i would guess.:D
geoman- col man thanks. as far as the body i don't think so. i was going to but decided not too. ahhhh well.
ido- thank butha
lou thanks man. I'll se what i can do...time permitting
emperor- cool man, thanks i'll play with it see what i can do it.
inveni0 - thanks man. ya there was a lot of thought on how to make the face. its like 3 morphs tweeked together. but i did try for that kinda look. lad you got it.
avatar- glad he creeps ya out a bit. hehehe. i'll fix that veins detail my man. as far as the hair i just forgot to change the color. ha. meathead. such a little deail forgoten. yikes i know. As usual thanks for the shag tips :D
mr. t- thanks brutha
30-06-2004, 04:47 PM
so did you finish it goat?
30-06-2004, 06:33 PM
01-07-2004, 10:14 PM
Very nice.Perhaps you should make that hair a bit thin. Also colour change would be good.Eyes are too dark.Other than that its good.
wow seemed this poped up a couple of days ago. so to answer the above it is finished. i just made the poof at the end of the hat blue. i moved on. I've been workin on my portfolio a bit. i'll get some stuff up if i can. thanks for the crits and comments.
10-07-2004, 05:28 AM
I just jump directly to the last page and saw the finished version and I could not hold a "WAW!".
Really cool model man. Gotta love all these wrinckles and bumps on the skin.
11-07-2004, 12:22 AM
What a nice model!!! ... I like a lot the texture and his expresion ... great work!!! sure it's going to make you portfolio much better ....;)
17-09-2004, 05:34 PM
Great look you finally got. The only thing still bothering me is that the bump feels too much around his eyes and cheeks, but tahts my personal opinion of course. Otherwise it really is great work.
18-09-2004, 10:09 PM
it's.....good....great......wonderful.....to see u all the 3d total guys doing great stuff.....u know....i think it's really a great family...altogether...it's happening......r u within a competetion!!! .....but if yes or no...it's altogether beneficial to the whole art community, not only to 3D....to see such good things being developed.....great start!!!...keep it up.....
01-02-2005, 11:33 PM
You character looks great Goat!:D
thanks jg. Its a bit old at this pointhehe, I have some plans for some new stuff soon. I hope anyway. work keeps me busy. cheers.
02-02-2005, 07:54 AM
Goat you've got to be the most talented
artist out there, and the most noble.
I wish you all the best, and remember
"Salt can go bad" I think???:D
