hi loser! (sounds like a flame :p)
Great modelling there, it already has the BMW look now! You know, the typical BMW feel.........
Why are the borders near the headlights jagged? they look wavy now... And, are those 'grills' modelled?
Good start here, keep up the good work!
:peace:
loser
15-12-2003, 05:40 PM
thanks for the comments
the borders around the headlights are supposed to be like that. it will look better when i put some more detail into it.
the grill is just boxes basically. i edited the polys a little to make them more rounded.

Good work, keep it up!

not a big fan of the BMW but i really like this model, it is coming along very nicely and some nice sharp renders there.
can not wait to see this completed, interested in seeing some wires of this tidy model :p
loser
19-12-2003, 03:43 AM
that reminds me!
i got that edge-map plugin (http://www.bytegeistsoftware.com/prod01.htm), but i don't know how to use it. anyone have any help with that?
if i can't figure it out i'll just post some normal wires tomorrow.

Loser your doing a fine job looks great. How you make the wire look like that?
loser
20-12-2003, 05:04 PM
i used a plugin called edge map which you can get for free here (http://www.bytegeistsoftware.com/prod01.htm)
after you install the plugin you just make a new material in max, and add the "edgemap" map to the diffuse slot.

another small update. added door handles. also fixed the area around the front wheel well. i need to get the sides of the car flat so i can cut out the doors soon.

as you can see, i model very slowly :p
Looking very nice loser :D
so nice in fact I would rather look at your beamer than mine :D

I really like your clean mesh, especially around the grills and headlights... The door handles are also well done, may I see a mesh of it?
Oh yeah, are you going to model the interior as well?
Keep up the good work! :)
loser
22-12-2003, 03:26 AM
hydrospell: i'll post a mesh of the door handles for you tomorrow. and i'm going to try and do the interior if i can find some shots of it. since its a race car there isn't much in the interior in the first place, so it shouldn't be too hard.
the side windows from this update took me forever. i think i must have worked on them for about 4 hours today, but i finally got it all done. then i threw together the mirrors in about 20 minutes.

Alright you loser! I really love the car and its modelled wonderfully. I really like those rims, BUT they aren't BMW rims. If all I saw were rims I could point out if it was a BMW or not, you know what I mean? Dont get me wrong I like them but IMO they dont belong on a beamer. Just my opinion though. Looks great!
I wish I could make car like that!

Ohhhhh.... you got me! I'm sorry about that. I didn't know you were modeling a specific BMW. It might just be me, but it seems like every BMW has the same rims. The ones with the BMW symbol in the middle. lol. I love your car tho, its lookin great!

22-12-2003, 10:59 PM
Looks really clean and you made it so quickly, hope your gonna do the rollcage. Its just like the M3 Lemans v8 car. I might do a convertion on my M3
Keep it up, how long has it taken in hrs so far?
I think you have a few problems around the headlights namely the point where the grills come down on the bonnet. Are you modelling that exact car cause if you are the entire nose area and lights are out:???:
loser
23-12-2003, 03:27 AM
hydrospell: here is the wire of the door handles. the handles are actually seperate from the body of the car.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/loser84/bmw320wire_02.jpg
lcrssguy: its alright about the wheels, i thought they looked a little funny at first too. i still don't have them perfect.
3dway'olife: even if i don't do the full interior, i'll definitely put the rollcage in there. as far as time, i'm not really sure. i've worked on it probably 2-3 hours almost every day since i started. getting all the details right takes me a while. texturing will probably go by faster, which is why i'm saving it for last. and the car in the picture i posted isn't the same model as the one i'm making, i just posted that since it had the best shot of the rims. and when you mention the problem with the grills, are you talking about how the bottom of them sticks out farther than the top? because now that you point it out it does look a little odd, so i'll probably go back and fix that up.
finally cut out the doors:

i couldn't figure out how to use edgemap at first either. after you put the file in max's plugin folder, restart max(or load the plugin if you have max running) and go to the material editor. click on the diffuse map slot and add the edgemap2 map. here's a picture:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/loser84/usingedgemap.jpg
then just render it.

Thanks, loser  , you were really kind to render a closeup for me. It's also very kind of you to share with me the making of the door handles.
It's a really nice piece of work, I like the back as much as the front part, you really got the BMW style out... Great JOB!!!
loser
26-12-2003, 06:42 PM
mcrazer: you can download edgemap here (http://www.bytegeistsoftware.com/prod01.htm)
here is a small update on the back. i dropped the back bumper down a little because it seemed too small. i also tried to make those clips they have holding the trunk of the car down, but i couldn't find a really good reference for them so i had to do the best i could.

the model is almost done now. i just have to finish up the back quarterpanel, and then go and make sure the rest of it looks right. and i have to remember to put the handle on the trunk of the car(make sure i don't forget that). i also have to do the interior still, but i don't think i'm going to put too much detail into it since you can't really see it anyway.

it looks fantastic so far, can't wait to see it textured. My only crit is that I think the door handles look a tad chunky. The ones in the photo you posted before are more slender IMO.
other than that... great!
There are some problems with the fitting of the backlight.. Can see it very well on the last picture..
loser
29-12-2003, 05:42 AM
mrc64: i know, i'd like to see it textured too :). but i told myself i wouldn't do any textures until the model is done, because i know if i start with them, then i'll never finish the model.
mystikos: the door handles might look different from that picture because the car in the picture is a different model. i only posted the picture to show the rims.
chan: i know about the lights not lining up. i still have to work on that whole back corner of the car.
thanks for the comments everyone
well you can't really see many changes in most of the updates now. i worked on the rims a little more and did the spoiler(the other one i just threw in there to see what it looked like and it was just kind of there, until now)

i'm sorry! i'll make it a big update tomorrow. i just need to move everything to my other computer, because working on this laptop just isn't cutting it any more. it takes a few minutes just to start test rendering on this thing.

looking great... excited to see it textured and painted... Your a very impressive modeller... i do see that you need to do some chamfering on your headlights... the wireframe looks great but when you smooth them the have some issues...

29-12-2003, 10:56 PM
Hey, that's a good model you have going there. Great work.
But the nitpick I am, I found something that seems odd. I think that that crease going along the side is not an indent, but more of a fold kind of crease ( i don't know how to explain it, so here is a picture of mine E36 M3, that should be it). Please do correct me if I'm wrong because I am planing on making that one next. :D
loser
29-12-2003, 11:14 PM

i think the mesh for the main chassis is pretty much done now, except for the area around the front headlights, which i'm still working on. i don't know what's up with the trunk door in this render, i think it has something to do with the caustics.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/loser84/bmw320_023.jpg
i did some more work on the headlights after that render, but didn't re-render because it takes about 50 minutes now.

31-12-2003, 05:16 AM
Some fine work there, Loser. How do you do the textures?
loser
31-12-2003, 05:20 AM
i just make all the logos in flash mx and then put the map as the diffuse slot on a normal paint material. my paint material is just a falloff mask in the reflective slot of a normal max material. i can go into more detail if you need it.

in the mean time less trying to help me and more texturing that model! ;)

alright my old account that i had all my pictures on got shut down so none of the other pictures will work. eventually i'll put them all up on this new account so if you really want to see them you can find them.
anyway, here's the newest render. i did the windows and some of the front headlights. i need to work on the diffuse map for the edge of the windows, because i accidentally made it fade from black to white when it should really just be black fading into clear glass. and i think the body is done now so i can finally put the textures on it.

i've noticed all these little pixels in the rims when i rendered them with brazil. does anyone know what they're from? i have a feeling its the HDRI map.

just ordered one of these babies!
Actually a BMW 318i sedan but... close enough!
Will get it in about 8 weeks! Canīt wait... :/
Then I did a quick search to see if thereīs anybody out there who has modelled one and here it is... just beautiful!
Was thinking of doing one myself so I keep busy waiting for the real thing! This inspired me very much.. thank you, loser!
