in this pic you can see that some of thoughs actualy are what that car is supposed to look like. corner of the glass ill try and fix, and the partnear the wheel well ill get on pretty soon.

heres one of my many many ref pics

nice, but some of the mesh looks a little bumpy, such as above the front wheel well, I know the fender does have a little pitch to it,
but in the refrence picture it looks smooth, your kinda jumps a little
but keep it going other wise its lookin nice

lookin good, but your rear fender flare is WAY too much. u almost seem to be modeling it w/ a wide body kit on it (im a HUGE skyline fan, so non stock things tend to pop out to me).. anyway, heres a shot right down the side, that shows how much the fender comes out, on a more or less stock r34 (hes got hood pins, and different mirrors... m3 style ones maybe?):

http://www.fantasycars.com/derek/cars/images/nissan/gtr_2.jpg

see, it comes out VERY little... just figured i would put in my $0.02. thanks for listening

how do you make your car paint cause I have seen on all your cars so far it doesn't look as realistic as it can be. Or it might be something else than car paint I am not sure but it needs some adjusments somewhere. Your modeling is fine keep up the updates..

neo_mosher_zion
07-01-2004, 02:22 AM
my car paint is a simple ajustment of the specturals and a raytrace at about 30-35. nothing big. i dont have a plug thats called "car paint" nor do i have brazil or some of the other rendering soft wear... unfortunatly. oh well, these textures may be mofifide as time goes on currently im fine turning the lights, finishing the front end up. i might re make the back end completely, and ill probably even redo the windows cause i dont like the way they turned out.

thanks though if you have seen my other cars i think these are my best head lights so far.

does anyone know how to make a better crome cause mine never look like real crome.

for instance in american chopper they have a bike called the spider bike, and it has a red crome on most of its wheel parts. that was my intention for my wheels anyone know how?

looks like a small model of a skyline, very pretty indeed, only thing my eyes didnt quite like was the texture on the rims, otherwise good work, keep it up ^^

slavke
07-01-2004, 05:38 AM
oh yeah I don't render with default 3d max render I use brazil. But I can tell you that this last render of skyline has much better look of paint than your previous cars. You are improving which is important. For chrome it is really simple use standard material and in maps rollout under reflection choose raytraced and put value of 90.

neo_mosher_zion
07-01-2004, 11:59 AM
im glad you guys like it, although that is the settings or around 90 i think it might be 80-90 but anyway it doesnt look quite right. do you mess around with spec.? cause that would give a different look. ill get working on the car again in a few day i have a project i should be doing lol

as for size im using blue prints so if you could be spicific about the size problem that would be a great help. anyone else think theres a size problem?

slavke
07-01-2004, 01:27 PM
I don't know for the size everything look fine to me. For rimps material maybe you can try brushed aluminum here (http://www.danielbuck.net/chrome_tut/chrome_tut.htm) is the link for a good tutorial how to make chrome and brushed looking aluminum. Hope it helps..

also i dont know what to do to fix the exture prblem... unless your specific on whats wrong.

travis_jinx
14-01-2004, 12:21 AM
It looks like you have the reflection set too high and it is reflecting the white background and this is washing out all your colours.

Kujoe
14-01-2004, 09:10 PM
the dimond shaped shadows under the wheel .Maybe tone the lights down. maybe:) Hide one light then render ,then another light then render.until you find the one thats makes that dimond.

travis_jinx
14-01-2004, 09:30 PM
Try a render with anything but a white background maybe black or a darker grey and see what this does to your textures. Maybe add 1x light and a skylight and see what effects you get ?

Just some suggestions...

slavke
14-01-2004, 09:55 PM
ok try this might give you a better look. And post how do you do your car paint cause it might be something wrong there too. First turn off any light you have but skylight. Or put a skylight and a omni light anywhere else with multiplier set to 0.5 and uncheck defuse in the roll out so it is only specular. Then place a tiny box above the car. Material for it is just simply standard white self illuminated color. Then with box selected go right click and uncheck shadows. For your car material what ever that might be u have to lower the reflection amount to 50-70 because the reflection of the box above will be to atractive. Just give us a brief setting for the car paint material that you are using.

VWporsche
15-01-2004, 01:14 AM
lower it.. and give it the ohh-so-important stock spoiler. other than that... looks good

well, y not, thats wot hes done on just about everything else ive seen him do rofl :p
j/k, ur work is good, but it appears to be marked out by washed out textures
heres a quick and dirty guide to a quick and simple starting point, render that and w'ell see were you go :) (this is assuming ur using brazil)
1.strip out/disable all lights/ground planes
2.reset brazil settings (select diff renderer and reselect brazil)
3.go to samples, 3X3
4.luma server, skylight
5.csg server enable
6.render
7.post result here
8. then, and only then can you start stuffing around with lights again cos that way we can see wot ur thing really looks like :)

neo_mosher_zion

anyway heres a shot of the texture window \/

and heres a close up of the spoiler which i just made litteraly only 10min ago

neo_mosher_zion
15-01-2004, 08:46 PM
heres a full shot of the car

note i think that the reason the car looks so white is cause of the white ground its on and the white sky... if i where i put a plane above the car and make it sky textured and some ashfalt as a floor texture the car wouold probably look better so i might just try that for the next render.

15-01-2004, 10:44 PM
I don't know if its deliberate, but one I saw in the carpark the other night, its rear lights didn't stick out that far, they were more flush with the boot. :)

slavke
15-01-2004, 11:38 PM
ok here is what you should put for your car material. Use Raytrace instead of standard. Then in the reflection slot use falloff with frensel. Go back to raytrace and under maps rollout in reflection put 60 instead of 100. Also in falloff options (this is optional) try to put higher index of refraction something like 2.5. This is the simplest way to get a good car paint material but there are all sorts of much complicative ways like RadarHead's is the one I use for my cars and is a bit more complex but I use it with brazil so I don't know how it behaves with default render.

slavke
15-01-2004, 11:45 PM
if you try with white box as I told ya you might get something like this here (http://www.vind-studio.com/~slavke/f355-progress11.jpg) . Also use HDRI plugin for enviroment images instead of faking reflections like you do. Click here (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/downloads/max/hdri/HDRI_v1.0.1.zip) to download it... GOOD LUCK!!!

neo_mosher_zion
16-01-2004, 01:34 AM
slavke thank you for the guidence. i will attempt to fix the lighting and the texture when i have time to do so... lol unfortunatly that probably wont be for another 24-30hrs. glad you guys like the model though. as for back lights thoughs red things are simply place holders i am not going to leave them looking like that you can be sure of that.

for this render the only thing i modified was the picture of the sky above the car... i made it bigger and it has seemed to work better. other then that i have done nothing... little rushed for time you see.

hopfullin i can finish this in time for feb2 which happends to be a portfoilo deadline at a very respected school called sheridan in ont. canada. it would cost a arm and leg but if i could get in that would be great all the same. so i might as well submit my best car if i am to submit anything at all lol

neo_mosher_zion
16-01-2004, 12:56 PM
slavke: this is with the new raytracer settings... note i dont know how to change index of refraction, also i the raytracer is at 30 not 60 or 100.... school was cancled so here i am workin on it again

what year is that looks different than Need for Speed Undergrounds maybe its just cuz I sooped mine up too much.Anyways excellent model I wish I could car model.
[EDIT]maybe make the ground texture black and white and use it as a bumpmap too just a thought.
[2EDIT]Are u gonnna make a scene outta that cuz that would be so cool if u had a motion blur then another car and had it like street racing in Japan or suttin with bright neon lights

tcomputerchip
16-01-2004, 04:33 PM
1. Back windows has overlapping onto model at top edges. Not sure if this is supposed to be there.

2. This is a difficualt area for most people. I think that the intersection between the two pannels is too clean. The edges of the pannels should be a bit more rounded, not 100% sure on this car, but the top of the head lamp fixture needs work.

3. For some reason the door seems as though its not aligned with the body on the right side of the drivers door. Something maybe with lighting or maybe in the model, this is giveing a wierd vibe here.

4. I never liked spiolers on cars. But if you must have one. I would recommend the same metal finish as the rims. Having it grayed out like this makes it look unpainted. Plus, you ever seen those brand new cars that are painted gray, looks like primer, man I hate gray cars.

5. Another window overlap section, maybe on other side too.

As for the lighting, I would follow the suggestion of removing all lighting from your scene and starting over if you have not already. There are great rendering systems out there that can assist in GI for the scene. I use final Render and the plug-in is very accurate and fast. Brazil R/S is another people like to fight over is the "Best". But in truth they all have the same code behind them, its a matter of preference. If you like the "settings" and taking a long time to setup your GI and lighting, use Brazil. I find that setting up lighting, for just about any scene, in final render is very easy and the results are supurb.

Anyway, you may like the control of having several lights. But, these GI systems now available are getting very close to real life lighting. They are becomming faster and more accurate. I would recommend venturing into a rendering system. VRay is another, I think its free. The others I mentioned are expensive, even for education discount.

Well, thats my 2 cents on everything. If you have questions on making your model look realalistic in your final composition, please ask. I have give some great tips.

neo_mosher_zion
16-01-2004, 05:37 PM
i fixed the windows i done know whats wrong with the head lights... and the door is somewhat fixed as for the color of the wing i think ill leave that the way it is. if i make it the red crome then there will be tooo much red on the car

tcomputerchip
16-01-2004, 06:03 PM
I was not talking about changing it to red chrome. I was talking about changing the crome to the rims chrome. All the crome should match on the car. Otherwise the car will look like it was made from part that you can get off the shelf at walmart.

Just a suggestion, the chrome should be a bit more shinny, maybe add a reflect texture to your chrome material and boost the glossyness/shinnyness. Remember, chrome can be perfect because when it comes chrome dipped, it is perfect to our eye's.

Here, I took a look at the headlight. You missed an inportant curve on the left side. Drawn out in the image below. The other curve on the right illustrates a slight indent to the top right.

In a few days, post a message. My girlfriend worked for nissan for more than 10 years. She will be able to help with this car no problem. I think she designed the interior for this car. Not sure. She will be back around 22nd of this month.

don't use that background. That is why you get those unrealistic reflections. If you want to use background use HDRI images with the plugin I gave ya couple of post before or do as I told ya place a white self illuminated box above the car without any backgound images. Regular images don't give nice reflections that is why it looks like washed and blury trust me I tried it before.

sarN
17-01-2004, 10:08 PM
yeah, if you just want something basic, and just have Max, i just put an HDRI map in env slot, then one in the skylight slot. Its not the best results like you can get form brazil (which mine is shot dangit) but its still decent :)
models looking good, are you planning on doing the interior>?

as for the character this is not my own creation a girl i know named Ashley Pike its her sketch and she says that i can make it in 3d. its going to be a cartoon style. hard part is keeping it look enough like her orgional drawing.

this is Ashley's sketch \/ (note her sketch was much larger i had to reduce the size to post it)

by styling you mean makin bodky kits and stuff?

as far as a tutorial i dont think im that good yet, there are plenty of flaws in my works just i hide them if i cant fix them. plus ive never realy written a tut. the funny thing is in my high school digital art class ive proved that i know more about 3dmax then the teacher.... OWCH that must hurt.

Must've been a burn for a teacher lmao but at least u shud write a tutorial on how u get your models started and all that small stuff and how u model your body kits or w/e...well in the end its up to u...but i would love to read a tutorial about ur method of styling ;) ight ttyl

makin a tutorial on my body kits and wings and stuff would be fun but currently im working on a robotics movie, and a character. i dont have much time at all. maybe sometime within a few months i could start it, probably wouldnt take long i dont normaly spend much time on kits and stufff, dependin on how simple they are. for this car id say the wing was my giggest work as far as time.
