Really cool things you've done with your desktops, I like it! :)

I was wondering, if I wanted to change my desktop, what programm would be most suitable? I'm running XP on a fairy new system, got enough RAM and speed to do crazy things, but it shouldn't take up too much resources...

I'm also curious how you guys make all this interactive stuff on your desktops (temp gauges, processor activity meters, calendars etc.). Can all of that be done with one programm, or do I need different ones for every aspect that I want to change?

I've been checking out the 'windowblinds' site, is that a good programm? I'd settle for changing it into something pre-made now, and maybe customizing it later on. Drawing my own buttons in PS and so on...

any tips?

Yes, it is complicated. So many parameters and knobs to manipulate, if you want to hear a nice sound.
And so, I'm not ever happy about my results.

I heard that sometimes during either WW1 or WW2, prolly WW1 but maybe both I dno, russians had to run in pairs with one rifle because they were short of em. So when the guy in the front died, the guy behind would pick up his gun and then do his job... dunno if it's true tho.
Maybe they're just re-acting a more extreme version of that ^^

No that's actually the truth. They were trying to save guns like that.
It was in world war two.


Another way they used to save guns was that they'd get all the prisoners (and it got REALLY easy to get into prison back then suddenly) and they'd send them to war without any guns at all, just with grenades and dynamite.
Their job was to cover the tanks and holes where the germans had dug themselves in with their bodies, so the Germans would first have to clear away the bodies before they could shoot effectively, and by then the "normal" soldiers would already have gotten there and shot the germans.

Shtrafbat (strafbat, schtrafbat, etc) - schtrafnoi batallion - punishment batallion.

BTW about 2 in 900 of them actually survived. :roll:
They were free to go fight in the normal army afterwards.


I think the statistic is actually that averaged over the entire war, for every 1 killed german 6 soviet soldiers died.
Of the males that were between 16 and 20 (I think) in 1941 only like 4% survived
And of all the males survived very little as well - that was the reason that until the 1980s no population census was held anymore, they were afraid people would find out how many truely died. Originally the official number was 20 million dead, 10 million dissapeared, now they say it's probably closer to 30-35 million dead and 10 to 15 million dissapeared.
For comparison, our first year of law at uni are 450 students and we've got trouble fitting everybody into the college rooms.

And let's not forget there were entire armies of women fighting in the 2nd world war on the russian side, towards the end of the war, and women flying airplanes and jumping with parachutes behind enemy lines.
Though credit's due where credit's due, England also had like three dozen battle airplanes that women flew and some transport planes and such.

Anyway conclusion: it was a pretty messy time, let's not repeat it.

You can turn one of them off by going to the Options -> Preferences menu, and unchecking "Show in Taskbar" and "Show in system tray".


One Winamp (agent) icon will stay on, though.

My desktop... Last time I checked I had about 300 icons on my desktop, and I cannot be bothered to clean it up :crazy: So I just turned icons off :dance:

Ok heres a question for you all, do you prefer minimalist desktop themes (start bar, background etc) or more complex arrangements that only you can use?

personally i try and keep things simple and in reach - but it still confuses other people trying to use the computer :o

The mac taskbar is getting replaced. I aslo use objectdock (similar to macs), which autohides, so if you wonder how i get to things, thier all down their :P

Edit: browsed thru the thread, and blackwolf: i have used most themes u have in litestep! I used 'Ghost' for a while, then 'MMD3' but after a few months, i went back to explorer, litestep was just more like a toy than something permanent.

No formal flash training. there was a class in school but that didnt get much past the basics of animation i think-a couple of tutorials have helped though - now all my content runs off a single .txt file! Quick to change stuff.

Yeah, only a few themes are really good enough to use on a daily basis, usually the ones with colour themes...

While it may be a toy, it really is quite powerful - the rightclick start menu is probably the best part - then having winamp/info in the task bar and being able to remove ALL icons (XP wouldnt let me remove explorer i think, one of those). Plus if you saw before i was using both avedesk and sysmetrix - which in explorer takes up quite alot of cpu when im playing games, where as litestep uses some but not a stupid amount. Also if you ever get into linux there are usually quite a few similarities with litestep which helps.

So that is why i dont plan on going back to explorer soon - at least until i get bored of super clean/net desktops (which is always possible)

lol... I just took screenshots of the Halo2 WMP skin you can get at "theskinsfactory.com" and then I edited the parts I liked to fit my icons... it's a lot of work but it pays off... now I can just fit any background i like in the photoshop file and there I go...
