i believe IdownupI used an alternative xp(or windows 2k3) skin which can be downloaded off the net somewhere, just google for xp skins, but i think you need another program to install them. sorry i dont know much on the matter, i just seen it at my friends house

sorry joe-q....guess i shoulda mentioned it took me a while to figure out how to use these themes :p the answer was kinda right in front of me....lol

if you click on "windowblinds" in the menu on the left, the page you get taken to should have "about windowblinds" written in a yellow bar just under the different categories in the main page (just before the various themes you can download). u'll see the windowblinds website. go there and get the free version (has a few limits....but not a time limit :) ). After you have installed it, it should run at startup and have a system tray icon, and whenever you click to download a new windowblind theme it should install it automatically :)


Most of the other progs in the left hand menu of this site all have free versions, some with time limits and some with other limits. One other tip is that the preview picture you see on the site are often made with a few different programs like windowsblinds + objectbar + desktopX etc etc. So you'll have to figure out which progs give you which effects. And some of them might take a lot of configuring :p Oh, and the wallpapers for the different themes have to be downloaded seperately in the wallpapers section. One last thing is that you might have to keep clearing your cookies coz after downloading a few themes it'll keep asking you to register.

I downloaded windows blinds.....the program......put on a skin and everything stoped working. Max doesn't work, some windows appz don't work, internet explorer shuts down without warning sometine and more. Mybe it was because some of the files got corupted, idk?? Anyway, luckily I was going to format my computer within the week so im ok. Its just a word of warning though, has anybody else got this happening??

Well Joe-Q.....I didnt have any problems with windowblinds, and my girlfriend has it on her comp at the moment and it's fine.....but like Fusion said all his stuff stopped working after he installed it. So I guess it's up to you....you can always unistall it if you dont like it :p

bear in mind that windowblinds will only change the look of the taskbar along the bottom, and the general windows interface a little bit (some of the themes they have add little roll-up buttons alongside the maximise/minimise/restore/close buttons on the windows)....if you want all the little mac-style and other menus and system monitors n all that you might need to install some of the other programs like objectbar etc etc.

i gather it's working fine now fusion :) did u get the enhanced version or just the free version? i just installed the enhanced version (found it on bit-torrent) all the animations work with it.....and the gt2 skin has the coolest file transfer animations :)

Yeah..I would like to know how to change the name AND the icon of the recycle bin...

Of coarse you can change the icon of the recycling bin/anything else......they have programs were you can make em' yourself(look at my desktop)

As for renaming the recycle bin.....the only way I know is to make a shortcut for it......then you'll be able to rename it.

to change the icons, go into desktop properties, click the desktop tab, then click "customise desktop" at the bottom, and under the genereal tab you should see the icons for my comp, recycle bin, etc etc and a "change icon" button.

if you wanna totally change all your icons for folders, my comp, my docs, etc etc you can get icon-packager from wincustomize.com :) lots of cool icons there :D

to change the icons, back in the day when i had win98, i think i just used to go to the desktop, right click anywhere, properties, settings(or some other tab, i cant remember) then you see a load of icons in a sub-window (dunno what the hell its called) in the dialogue. like recycle bin my computer, y'know, the "special" icons. click one then go to "advanced" or "properties" (sorry cant remember) then onto "change icon". something very roughly along those lines. dont work with xp though...

You may have realized that in Windows NT/2000 and various versions of Win9x, you absolutely cannot change the name of the recycle bin. The closest thing you can do is make a shortcut to the recycle bin and name the shortcut something else. That's not quite the same as physically changing the name.


You can get around this restriction by editing the registry. But remember, messing with the registry can really mess up your computer if you do thew wrong thing. Back up your data before attempting any registry hacks.



1. Run RegEdit. You'll find it in your Windows folder or go to the Start menu, select Run, and type REGEDIT.EXE.

2. Select "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT"

3. Choose CLSID

4. Select "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"

5. Double click on (Default)

6. You'll see the current name of your "Recycle Bin." Simple change it to whatever you want and close the Registry Editor.

7. Click on the "Desktop" and press F5 to refresh shortcuts.


Why is this tip worthwhile? It's about power. You have the right to call your deleted files area whatever you want.

dont worry fusion i went to some CRAP schools too :p my primary school (junior school) had about 20 students on average, only 3 in my class...and was a 12 mile drive thru the mountains to get there every day :p and when i was 12 i went to boarding school....which was utterly f*****g s**t....lol. was like some old fashioned 19th century style dump!!! we even had to go to church every sunday in kilts and blazers :p and play rugby at weekends. cost a lot of money and they treated the students like crap. its closed now....praise the lord!!!!!
i went to a cool school in hong kong tho....1000+ students, cool field trips, and i was part of the welly throwing team on sports day :D

I must be unusual in that I actually use my desktop for shortcuts to my programs. I hardly ever use the start>programs as its too slow and fiddly. In fact I cant remember the last time I did.

The prog I have collects your info and puts it on your desktop background. I think, it uses active desktop somehow. Actually Im guessing, I dont really know how it does it. Only it does it in a very ugly way which you have no control over. Its not a window

I don't talk on msn/aol/icq anymore. I have so many ppl on my list but one day I just realized.........It takes up sooo much of my time!! So I uninstalled it and haven't brought it back ever since. And it has done a charm!!Im didicated to forums now :) You can quickly check whats going on, fast post wherever you want, and its there 24/7.......unless you guys make us painfully wait 3 days for the server to switch :xx:

There should be something where instead of talking you just draw/paint whatever you want to say.......after all a picture is worth a thousand words:D

I like some of the features that are unique to each software package. I like the layout, colors, backgrounds and games for MSN 6.1, I like the reminders and offline messaging and spellcheck in ICQ, and... well... I know a lot of people that use AIM XD.

Then again, I haven't used Trillian in a long time. Does it support ICQ's offline messaging? Does it have spellcheck? Does the MSN voice chat work through it? What other programs are out there that support multiple chat programs. Hmm, I think one of my past Maximum PC issues had a section on IM. Anyone remember which one? I'm afraid to start searching. o.O

So.... any comments on my actual desktop? Oh! Oh! Can anyone out there name every one of my systray icons? Hmm???

I use PC-cillin, Zone Alarm, and Inboxer to keep my system clean. That's the key, you know. The evil doers out there survive by using multiple angles of attack, so you have to use multiple angles of defense. Oh yeah!

well I downloaded zone alarm off kazaa just to be safe, it's a good program. I'm gonna use it with my McAfee Norton anti virus, it blocked some backdoor thing and Norton deleted it. Gonna try to find Pc cillin too tomorrow. ;)

He probably means ZoneAlarm Pro, which isnt free unless you (you know).

I gave up using ZA, its just too much hastle. If you search around there are better ones. Maybe harder to use, but have less bugs and use less resources. In the end I went for a hardware firewall they arent that hard to use these days (if you get a good one).

I got zone alarm Pro, read a lot of reviews and checked out the site to see how it works. Didn't detect any virus or backdoors when I installed it as well, so it's safe.

Fusion: I wouldn't say it's too much. They all server different functions. PC-cillin protects me from viruses, including pop3 mail and webmail. Zone Alarm protects me from unwanted inbound or outbound communication over the internet. And InBoxer kills spam dead and is the very best spam killer I've ever used. Thanks about my desktop. That's Lain. Yeah, she's freaky, but she's cool. And no, I haven't made any custom characters for UT2003.

DanielB: I'm sure you were safe downloading ZA how you did, but it is still pretty funny that you used a program known to create security holes, at least indirectly, to download a program to plug those very same security holes.

Nortan wont filter spam. Its got an auto-protect, e-mail outgoing check and some script protection.

Why is the screenshot 1200x700 then ?.. That dont look good on a simple 17tum..

on a 17tum should it be 1024x768
on a 19tum should it be 1280x1024 - 1600x1200
