wat version of max r u using? default scanline in max 4 cant do shizen :)
very nice work still... are you measuring to get proportions or what?
Drizzt
06-01-2004, 02:37 AM
What is scanline and what is GI?????
novoAlias
06-01-2004, 03:12 AM
scanline: max's default render method
GI: global ilumination, makes all thos pretty colours reflecting on thos 3d meshes.. generally used to make realistic lighting

r u measuring it or bi eye? thx
well good work, you can advertise it for them, just sell the mesh to an ad company :p
jawahar
08-01-2004, 12:23 PM
blackwolf:sorry bro,i missed your question.:o :p ,i am basically measuring proportions by using a dead on orthogonal profiles(font, left, top, bottom, back, inside) of the real phone scanned and scaled down to the actual height and width(as in the real phone).so hopefully its pretty close to the real phone..

this looks like great texturing. IT BETTER BE FROM SCRATCH!! LOL
my only suggestion is to thin the board down by like half. that stuff is pretty think say like a potato chip.
keep it up
jawahar
12-01-2004, 11:38 PM
thx for the comment jeff.yes you are right about the thickness, this is approximately how thick it will be after all the processors, capacitors and other components will be added but the chip in itself is thinner,:) .will update soon.
the textures are all created in photoshop so far except for the table wood.:)
thx for taking the time.

thanks for the feedback aazim and g69,i use only max6 and mental ray for all my work so far, maybe trascend to maya or XSI soon ;) :D :D
more updates soon.
thx
OMG.....max for all this?
could you please tell me how you did the text on the back cover?
did you use boolean? or shape merge?
and can i see a render of that please?
jawahar
10-06-2004, 05:42 PM
g69: i used the attach function with editable poly to attach the extruded text to the main shape, simple as that ,box modeling that detail would be a real pain  ,not that its impossible ;) :D .
correction to the last post, the sticker renders are scanline right now, will add reflectivity and render with MR in the final version.
will post the render soon.stay tuned.
thanks. :)
THANX alot....i knew of attaching but never thought off attaching the text to an object! thanx man, uve taught me alot... no i can also add more details if i ever need em :D
keep it coming :)
novoAlias
10-06-2004, 07:13 PM
omg that detail is crazy!
the only crit i can find is that when those stickers smudge its not like that, its like patchy faded...
apart from that pristine work as usual :D. although i dont know if you need all those lines..:p
if you made a car with that much detail you would be starting to scare me.. although u wuld probably get hired by nasa :D

Awsome work, really nice!
What sort of lighting setup have you used in your last update? What enviro is that (which hdri, if it is a hdri?)
Also with the "attach function with editable poly to attach the extruded text " the mesh isnt actually joined is it, like if u put a mesh smooth on it the text would be treated differently to the back of the phone? Im just wondering if it is necessary to attach the text once you have modeled it seperatley or if it has a benifit i dont know about. :)
Anyway GREAT work, ill have to keep watching this thread.
Cheers.
jawahar
14-06-2004, 11:00 AM
thanks for the comments g69 , aazim and tigerdog.
g69:thanks a lot.i will post the mat. settings soon.:)
Tigerdog:thanks for the feedback.i am using a skylight and kitchen.hdr for the illumination.using the same hdr map for both environment and sky color settings(blurred version).
you are right about the mesh not actually joining in.it doesnt weld the vertices of the mesh and the extruded text for sure.switching NURMS subdivisions - on doesnt change the text at all either.the one advantage that i saw using this method was that i dont have to poly model the numbers because it becomes an "ELEMENT" of the main shape(i.e. editable poly) after attaching.the extrusion amount was set to very low value so there apprears to be a very subtle extrusion when the main shape is animated(opened up/closed)
Some new updates on the circuit board, there is still lots to model.will update soon.
p:s: please see attached bump map,its also the relative size of the chip (real dimensions) in real world coordinates.

Hehe, I meant seek professional help from a doctor, because you're crazy.
As for professional feedback, I've worked with computer hardware my entire life. The only area's I can see that are wrong is the chrome texture that you're using on the pins/connectors, while computer parts are a little shiny, they're not THAT shiny. I've noticed in recent posts you've fixed that, but there is still a unreal look to the overall board texture that I cannot pinpoint.. It's too clean... The chips look great, but maybe they could be a bit darker.
Wow, trying to find things wrong on this project is hard,
Sorry.......

well ,since i didnt get much feedback in my last posts ,i figured i should work more on the circuit board,so i started wiring the circuit board.also added parallel connectors on either sides of the board.
next step is to dirty up the wires.
thanks again for your feedback jdpcreations,i fixed the reflections and aged the textures a bit as well.
i hope you will like this update and finally post some feedback.
thanks for your time.:)
http://www.portfolios.com/Pics/jawahar/jawahar_8_p.JPG
completely breathtaking. Your detail is so great :) ANd your renders are always so clear and large it makes it easier to see that there really is nothing wrong with your model lol. I dont know what to say, its great! keep going man. How long does it usually take you to render these?
slavke
18-06-2004, 01:16 PM
this is the best 3D work I have seen in my life. I just can't believe how realistic this looks. I have seen your watch also but this is much better. Just ****** amazing.
jawahar
18-06-2004, 01:31 PM
sarn and slavke,cheers guys :)
sarn: the last update on the circuit board took 2 hours to render.
this one took 35 minutes
reworked the exterior texture for the cell phone.hopefully i nailed it,what do u say?
thanks :)
http://www.portfolios.com/Pics/jawahar/jawahar_7_p.JPG
hey jawahar, excellent work dude...the level of detail is amazing, and the textures you made are really cool. as far as you asking for feedback...i am not as good as you with 3d but i feel like giving my opinion.... your board is excellent...its looking realistic, the chromes you used there, needs to be glossed a bit. the chip materials your using makes it look like its made out of fabric, if you see chip closly, they have lines all over which are a bit shiny.... and as per your last render...the back side of the mobile cover is too reflective, is it really that reflective in real? i dont have this phone, but most shiny covers ive seen are a plastic type from behind, and even if they are reflective, the are glossy from behind.
i am sorry if i am wrong...its very well done...i simply love it.
hope to see more renders :)
keep up the good work.
jawahar
18-06-2004, 03:54 PM
thx for the feedback g69 ,all of it taken, will gloss out the reflections on the pins.
also the chips ,do u mean the brown chips?,i will work more on it if that is what you are pointing towards...
the back of the mobile cover is indeed a bit too reflective i will fix that too.
thanks again.
jawahar
19-06-2004, 01:17 PM
spent all day trying to figure out why the back of the phone was reflecting so much.finally realized the ior was set to 2.5 , :grr:.
toned it down now,i hope that solves the reflection issues on the outer case.updates on the circuit board next before i get to working on the dial side of the cell phone.
feedback appreciated.

19-06-2004, 06:39 PM
well....................any feedback...or is there really nothing to say about updates that really takes a while to render.... :o
hey jawahar...sorry dude couldnt reply earlier... i am busy with some work atm. this one looks more believable! excellent job, the back of the cover looks awesome., damn real....i noticed, that you have a mesh problem on the back cover (corner area). try fixing the edges and vertices there, thats the only mesh problem i can see as per your render view. now my comments would be:
the copper pins where the battery sits, they arent shiny, try increasing their reflection.
and the area where the card goes inn...is damn black, it seems like you forgot bout the lighting there...or was it on purpose? please check that area and it would be fine :)
i have a question, what renderer are you using for your stills, and for you animation, what renderer are you gonna use?
very well done so far, just some area which need to sorted out...and would make this an excellent cell phone. :)
keep it up.....waiting for more updates :)
ps. yeah i was talking about the brown chips in my last post.

20-06-2004, 10:12 AM
thanks for the feedback g69,still working on the materials for those things, will update soon.:)
i am using max 6 and mr for rendering, one area light with hdri...
in the meantime,i fixed the circuit board,
changes:
Reworked the displacement map
Decreased reflectivity on the pins,
Changed the textures on the brown chips
Aged the wires, making them look less contrasting
p:s please disregard the missing textures on the small chips.
it was missing on the cmop i was rendering on.
i am pretty much done with the circuit board unless there is something else i could fix on it.
i hope you like and like always wish to hear some feedback :D :D :D

i will join the MR thread, dont have time right now to join the MR thread, too much work on hand,i have two client projects at hand as well and the deadline is approaching fast.
about the high res renders ,i think its your monitor maybe too small, well i am using a 21 inch so ...:D :D ,i am rendering these at 1600*1200 so u can see all the detail. however i will post some small versions when i have time to optimize the filesize.

jawahar, mitra ur driving me crazy with ur work!
the amount of detail...the amount of time you are putting into this is insane! lol........i love it....keep it up.
the front display texture you made is also identical to the ref. great job dude....but for the texture...did you really do it 1 box at a time?!?!?!? if so did you know there are fonts available for the digital characters (man you could have used that and saved time)
but anyways...keep it up dude!
i am seriously looking forward to see this completed and dying to see the animation work!
keep the renderings coming :D

thx for the comment g69,the FONTS are fixedsys fonts rasterized and refined by deleting extra pixels.the icons are all drawn pixel by pixel. .
for the pattern in the back ,i used filter texture-patchwork and overlayed several copies.the blue circles were patterened using define pattern and then overlayed in different shades and blended by masking out extra circles with the brush.;)
more updates soon

mitra lagda tera checkup karana hi pau ga doctor koloun..... Excellent work once again...but i guess there are some areas which look a bit strange due to that view... (check the M on the bottom in the 2nd render....looks strange)
i guess its coz of view. anyways...waiting for more.

jawahar, what hardware do you have?
what rendering times are you having...?
jawahar
01-07-2004, 02:10 AM
nico3d: rendering time ,20 minutes per frame, so i have been rendering 600 frames on 30 machines for 8-9 hours now,all alone :( , my feet are killing me... and i still have 3000 more frames to render :crazy::crazy:
so please...., lemme know how you feel about it so far guys :!!!:
the hardware:20 out of 30 machines have geforce 3 and 1.5 gb ram,the rest have 1 gig...
the two i am working on simultaneously have 1 gig ram each...

Well, the model is perfect, really...
Only one question:
Why do you show your hdri environment in the renders? In other words, why didn't you override it? The kitchen probe as a background looks a bit wierd :o :p
jawahar
01-07-2004, 02:35 AM
thanks ninto :),i rendered a few frames with the kitchen probe hdri as environment to test it,it looked ok as i am doing only a camera rotation for now...i am just using the environment for the disassembled camera rotation in mid air,the actual animation where the entire phone opens up will be with an actually modeld environment or a textured ground plane.
will post the first half of then animation sequence soon, and the other 3000 frames as soon as possible,my legs!!!....
stay tuned.

Great work bud! . very nice renders .and very realistic.
your attention to detail is once again outstanding.
a few points.
areas around buttons have small errors. pretty much unnoticble.
material for the screen for me should be layered with a harder reflection. seems not sharp enough.
floor material way too low rez :) .

I read some complaints about less comments on your model. jawahar, I'm currently scrolling backwards to check out the real pictures and save them and save the CG shots as well. I'll try to give some nice advise, I must have missed the reall ones, you're model already looks incredibly real, you have a great skill for rendering!
shiroii
08-07-2004, 03:07 AM
Yo, here I am again, I checked every page. One time you told something like here's the reall life thing. (dunno what page, I couldn't find it anymore) But the picture wasn't there. There was the picture of the display screen. I saw nobody made a comment. I do. I think your version is a bit to clear. The real version is more rough, blocky and pixely (that's not even a word :p) Take a look at the uhm... the... things on a clock that tell the time, timearrows or somth. They're pretty blocky and pixely on the real display and you made them pretty smooth, just an example.
After reading everything I think I know how you feel, I respect your way of staying friendly, hardly anyone is giving comments, It's hard to find something trough all the: " ow, you are so good" posts and the " OMG, this is so amazing" I really got sick of them after a while :grr: I suppose there should be a group post of you'r so good, that would shrink the number of pages incredibly
Could you please post a link to the reall images, inside and outside duh!!! :p I'll see what I can comment for you! :D

i just checked the page where i posted the real reference pics,i think i have overwritten the same file with some other render on the ftp server that is hosting it.the image is at home,i will post it as soon as i get home.:)
u are right about the arrows on the screen, the should be less sharper and more pixelated,i will try to get back to it soon.
right now i am doing the animation for the screen itself changing to disassemble mode in the settings panel, basically animating the front screen as if somebody is operating it...
will post more updates and the reference pic soon.please stay tuned.
about the good comments...do u really think so...honestly i would have liked a lot more comments than i have got here so far ,out of the 145 replies i have receive so far,i have posted around 40 PICS in just updates !,not to mention the replies to other peoples feedback so that actually leaves us with a very few people who have replied...anyway...i gotta keep going, and so will i :D :D ;)

just finished animating the screen of the cellphone as the cell phone opens up
heres the animation breakdown:---->
main keyframes :
1.Phone opens up : the screen illuminates
2.Press Middle button : goes into main menu
3.Change sub menu to settings and go into settings screen
4.change sub menu options to disassemble...
and the phone starts disassembling
Keyframe calculations:
I calculated the time delay it actually takes to navigate within the menu's and the phone to illuminate using a stop watch.
1.Time it takes to illuminate the screen in the beginning : 27 msec : 10 frames(@24 fps)
2.Time it switch to main menu : 30 msec : 12 frames(@24 fps)
3.Time it takes to navigate between submenus: 45 msecs : 18 frames(@24 fps)
4.Natural time it takes for the human eye to comprehend the change : .13 msec : 5 frames approx
all calculations using stop watch timer and textures in photoshop.
hope you like....

It all looks good, but I think the main menu should be a bit faster. In your animation it lasts like 3 seconds to go from one item to another. I don't have a cell phone with a fancy color display and animations(save that I use it), but I think 3 seconds is a bit long. Say you want to look up something quickly, you'd have to wait 3 seconds while you want to go like : "click click click" and not: " click click ... ... .. .... ... ow ah it's ready.... click." Don't know if it's that slow in the real thing, if it is I wouldn't buy it :p The rest of the speed things look pretty good to me, really like the opacity effect. (fades out, new one fades in)
jawahar
08-07-2004, 06:51 PM
shiroii : thx ,you are right,it does look a little slow over there. will fix that.thanks.will also post the reference image i was talking about in a bit.tx
kidda jawahar...haven been here for a while...man u have gone real far...its always nice to see your work dude...i just checked out the animation test u did, it looks really nice :D
i just have 1 critic, and that is...the black rubber stopper (dont know what exactlry they are called) are really black, it looks like they arent getting any light. the rest all looks cool, the images you did for the display are also great.
keep up the good work, really looking forward to see the final animation.

ps. how long did 1 frame took you to rendeer? and what was the total render time?

just testedthe animated textures on the actual phone. earlier i was using opacity mapping to get the led text but now its all one avi file in the material editor slot.thank god it looks same...:)
also see attached the refernce -texture images along with the pics.
p:s: the screen that i was using for refernce has a different background pattern so i used it to create the icons, the blue bg pattern is what i actually have on my phone...
hope you leave some feedback,i am almost nearing completion so i hope you like it...

Just when I thought that you could not get any crazier I read : “all the textures are handpainted in photoshop”. Now first of all how? Second of all why, if you had the images from your digicam? I mean I only use PS to touch up phto-images, ive never been able to make realistic textures from scratch. To me its almost unbelievable how you have done this.
A tutorial is not an option, you have to do one, have you noticed how long this thread is…….
p.s I think you should change your name to “ The craziest dam 3D modeller in Toronto”. Oh yeah and maybe I missed this but how do you have 30 PCs?
Finally how about you make a whole room with this much detail? Should only be a few billion polys, and half a decade out your life! Lol! Go on it will be fun.

just a closeup on the adaptor.will update more tomorrow.thanks
shiroii
15-07-2004, 05:29 PM
'suppose I should upgrade my skillz. Cell-phones are like the most important thing for some people. My brother for example, can't stop checking his cell-phone out, to see if he didn't get a message. He makes pictures of everything there is to photograph and he has this anoying poly tones (quad or tri :p) I on the other hand, never use a cell-phone. I have this old thing i dunno, it's not that old, but it isn't the hightech **** everyone has these days. I don't use them and then it's pretty hard to upgrade your skillz

Oh yeah baby - its still going on!
i might change the music - stay away from that style of music. other than that u model is gr8 as usual :P maybe a but heavy
:D :D :D
jawahar
23-07-2004, 01:50 AM
thx aazim :D :D .the heaviness in the wireframe is becasue of the iternations set to 2.i am also a bit double minded about the music but i have a feeling this song might be the right one as i progress with the animation....;)

I just saw the movie and noticed a few things.
First of all it's a bit too dark, at least it is at my computer and normally everything is just bright and clear, thought I'd say that since some people'd judge the computer for that. Secondly, the animation doesn't show the adapter very well. You can see the wires pretty good, but you can't see all the fine details at the adapter. This is due the brightness too of course, but the camera doesn't show muh of the adapter. Uhm, I suppose that'd be it. Nice work! :)
jawahar
25-07-2004, 05:20 AM
thanks goose and shiroii...:) :)
shiroii: i see what you mean about the adapter not showing for too long...thre is so much to show in the actual phone that i might have to compromise a bit with the detail on the adapter...:o ,its 10 seconds seconds already and i have to make sure the total animation is below 1 minute 30 seconds...(the watch is eating 30 secs, and then the other projects as well :p :D ).but i will look into it...thank you for the observation :)
about the colors,i am pretty sure its the gamma on your monitor man,i could be wrong but i have checked it on almost 30 comps already and it looks fine to me...
LEMME KNOW GUYS,PLEASEEEE !!!!
the animation so far has been rendered in 3 seperate layers:
1.foreground animation: 32 bit tga sequence
2.background layer
3.wireframe layer
everything was then composited and color corrected( using discreet color corrector and histograms)
jawahar

the server seems to be down,so i cant upload animations for some days.will update with progress pics till then and post animations soon.
thanks
shiroii
26-07-2004, 04:35 PM
This is gonna be for a protfolio movie? Then you can't show everything for hours, to be sure everyone saw the detail. :p I think the main point of the cell-phone part would be the actual phone, but make sure that no one thinks you just made a simple adapter. Let them notice that you hae modelled the adapter in detail, not just simply and simple adapter ;)
keep up the good work!
p.s I shall look into the gamma thing, but I don't feel like downloading the movie again  Will download it another time :D
