Very nice! Great model and material. The only think I donīt like in the image is the reflection map you used. I think itīs disturbing a bit.
Anyway, itīs a wip so Iīm sure youīll make it really fine in the end!

Yup, real nice work here :D, i would like to know how u ppl do the underside, ie for low shots and wen u look thru the intake etc? cheerrs :D gd stuff and nice work, uv really given it personality

Andy_k-3DT

there's two ways of doing the "hidden stuff",

1, just model the bits that you can see and use textures for any stuff that's well hidden

2, model every nut, bolt and screw

One way is quick and effective the other is very time consuming but the results can be worth it :)

I've fixed the rear lights and a couple of other tweaks this evening. I'll post an update when I've made some real progress hopefully I'll find a few hours to play this weekend

The "reflection map" is just the sky image and yes it will no doubt get changed, but it's a fairly neutral outdoor scene which gives a good idea of how the materials will look for the final render

Cheers for the comments guys, all noted and will no doubt be acted upon :)

Andy_k-3DT

Qubical, not really "wasted" I agree but I'd never really intended to go to that level of detail, but with an afternoon to spare I thought "why not?" but it did get a bit silly when it got to the stage of every dial being modelled rather than texture mapped.

Honki, the switches on the dash panel, cover such things as choke, mixture control, manual advance and retard of the timing, lights, wipers, fuel pumps, ignition etc etc. They all serve a purpose (or so I am told :))

Sarn, I hadn't seen your Cobra, in fact I'd only ever seen one other modelled in 3D and it was the AC model not the Shelby one.

Thanks for the comments guys, I've added a couple of tweaks this morning, not enough to justify a new image so I just updated the link on the previous one.

Looks awsome. One crit that I have is it looks like the tires are to wide for the rims.

Andy_k-3DT

They are a bit wide, but it will get corrected :)

looking great andy, but did u do the hood at the front raised above the body shell a little bit on purpose? because you can see that the stripes arent perfectly straight. just nitpicking since i dont really see anything else wrong with it :D

Ravens
04-02-2004, 11:42 AM
I this an error or does it need to be like that ? or you cant see it of the angle ?

BUT GREAT model..!!

Andy_k-3DT
04-02-2004, 11:49 AM
yes I did do the hood slightly "imperfect" deliberately - I've never seen one of these where the panels fit absolutely spot on :)

I've got a hood that fits exactly so I can always drop that in but it was almost harder to get one that didn't quite fit perfectly.

and no it's not an error on the front, the vent on the other side is hidden by the bodywork.

Andy this is indeed flabbergasting modelling. Wiper rivets, can you get more detailed than this??
To make it even better i suggest you make the red lenses on the parking lights transparent, with the lightbulb showing inside. And improve the headlight lens map.

Andy_k-3DT
05-02-2004, 12:35 PM
at the risk of sounding like an advert Cinema 4D is a superb piece of software, it's the most stable 3D program I've ever used and quite simply never crashes. It's renderer is up there with the best especially when you add in the advanced render module and is incredibly quick - the longest render of the images shown here was the dashboard and that took just over 10 minutes at 1260 x 1024 using 20 shadow mapped omni lights.

The doubters should try reading a few of the magazine reviews or download a demo from Maxon.

I'll post a couple of updates tomorrow if I get time to do any more work on it.

Andy_k-3DT

absolutely no secret slavke,

depending on the software you are using you may need to adjust the parameters.

Colour - RGB all set to 83 with a 64% brightness

Bump, is a simple noise map set at -6%

the specular was set to

plastic type, width 41%, height 64%, fall off -18% and inner width 1%

Andy,
Wonderful example of the 3d modeler's art. Fantastic work all round. Am inspired that you use C4D as I am in the process
of getting aqainted with it at the present. Just downloaded Mesh Surgery to go with the V8.5. I agree that it is rock stable and a pleasure to use. Hope to post some cars myself soon.

Hey Andy, thats a lovely model. Amazing detail level.
I'm gonna follow up on your c4d tips there, already looking up the c4d demo.

Are you planning on a 1600x1200 screenshot yet? :)
I would definently use that as my background.

Cheers mate, 5 star rating!

(my grammar sucks -_-)

*EDIT* Oh by the way, do you know where i can get newbie/intermediate c4d tuts?

dave3d
09-02-2004, 12:24 PM
Hey Andy! Thanks a lot for making me interested in c4d. Awesome program, I just learned how to create polygons and using the bridge tool using the demo.

Andy_k-3DT
09-02-2004, 12:29 PM
dave3d, you should enjoy C4D, it's a powerful piece of kit and once you get a handle on the workflow very easy to produce good results.

Silverdog, I just got my hands on mesh surgery and it looks ike a superb suite of plugins I'll comment more when I've had a proper chance to use them all.
I'll do some big renders when I've finished it, still got some details to add (like seats, belts etc) at the moment you'll have to put up with the small ones :)

Karabo, yes I agree the detail is a bit OTT but i'm kinda pushing the limits to see when either my new PC gives up attempting to render it or the software decides "enough is enough" - neither limit has been reached so far and this last render took 12 minutes at 1280x1024 with full anti aliasing. Yes, I'll make a scene for it eventually - the idea is already sketched out and i'm in no real hurry

here's another update, it's Sunday and I didn't have much time to play with it (the joys of family life and deadlines for "proper" projects) but I decided a rework of the exhaust was needed (which of course meant modifying the body mesh :() along with side badges, vents and a new texture for the paintwork.

http://www.andykay.org.uk/cobra/frontview6.jpg

Once again folks, thanks for all the comments I'm genuinely flattered by all the interest this one has aroused.

Andy: I just noticed that making models is quite simple. I'm beginning to get familiar with the interface aswell.

Do you know what c4d 8.5 costs?

Btw, thats my wallpaper atm

Andy_k-3DT
09-02-2004, 12:58 PM
prices start at Ģ499 for UK users for the base package and go up from there to just over Ģ2000 for the Studio bundle which includes 7 modules. One of the nice things about the package is you can add the various modules as and when you need them. The advanced renderer is great and add s quitea few features. Bodypaint is awesome and one day I'll get around to using it properly. Sketch and toon is superb but requires the advanced render module (check out issue 47 of 3D World for my review of both of them).

It may be worth getting hold of a cover disk version of an earlier version then upgrading - issue 44 of 3D World had C4D CE with a limited render size on the cover with an upgrade offer to fully unlock the program which was time limited to the 30th of November last year but Maxon may well be persuaded to offer you the same deal especially if you are considering upgrading to 8.5.

Andy.

a couple of updates, aside from the engine and gearbox (coming later) the modelling is just about complete just need to do a few corrections and tweaks to the bits I'm not 100% happy with and then get to work on a scene for it :)

Amazing, not much else to say :D
How long have you been doing 3d?

Andy_k-3DT
11-02-2004, 12:37 PM
tee hee Sarn, the answer to that is probably "too long" :)

lets' just say I started with 3D in the days when the Amiga was king using Imagine. later switching to lightwave (and hating it) then onto trueSpace (which in those days was called just Caligari which I still use now - despite what a lot of people say it's a great piece of software.

I started using Cinema 4D8 last October when I had to write a couple of reviews for it although I already had a copy of C4DXL7 I'd only ever used it for rendering and this is the first real "serious" modelling project I've used the software for.

amazing details! really good job, but i agree about the proportions.
as i told you so some posts ago, the car proportions looks kind of funny. Maybe the wheels are too big, or the body too short. Looks a little cartoony!

i love the floor mat too, can you post the settings please?

this is a whole life working in 3d, i can see all this experience in this model! I started with 3d studio (not 3d studio max) a lot of years ago, but looking at your cobra i think that all this time was allmost wasted time.

hey,
me again

i saw another great thing at your car, and i have another question about it.

the chrome at the rims... looks cool.
this little white glows makes a nice effect. is just the reflection hdri map? or does the mat have some special setting?

Andy_k-3DT
12-02-2004, 10:59 AM
cheers guys, I'll take a look at the bodyshell in a couple of days (I've got a deadline to meet:() - it matches up exactly with the drawings but I take your point that it loks a little short - should be a fairly easy fix :)

material questions,

the floor texture is a pretty simple one,

it's a mid grey, RGB all set to 123, brightness set to 80%

diffusion set to 80% and reflection at 25%. the bump is a noise bump (although sand or something similar would do the job) set at 5% height. Specularity was switched off for this material to get an even distribution of light.

The wheel alloy is a slightly more complex shader using 3 specular channels, fusing and anistrophy to create that "milled" look. The white points are reflections of lights, rather than use HDRI for what were "test renders" I used 20 omni lights in a circle around the car.

If you've got access to a shader with multiple specularity channels I can post the settings but i'm guessing they will be pretty much Cinema 4D specific :)

sarN
13-02-2004, 12:40 PM
to me it looks like the wheels are too wide :) that shader you have on the rims is sick

Andy_k-3DT
13-02-2004, 01:12 PM
I'll have a look at it tomorrow, I suspect it will be easier to stretch the bodyshell (my first thought is that it's a fraction too short between the door frame and the front wheel arch) than to make the whole car narrower.

As for the wheels, I was trying to fill the arches out, maybe I should have gone for a lower profile tyre to do that with rather than the "traditional" higher profile but that would have made the rims wrong :)

I'll post an update tomorrow when I've had a chance to look at it.

yeah sarN I kinda liked that shader as well :)

Andy,
After a second and third look, it seems to me that the

@ Sarn, here's a schematic of a the Jag IRS, it's pretty much a "stock item" for kit car builders as it's easily modified and incredibly robust.

Most of the suspension was built from my own working knowledge of this kind of thing - I used to spend a lot of my time playing with kit cars :).

The chassis itself was done from drawings of a concept which a friend of mine is currently developing - so glean what you can from the images as I'm not really in a position to share the plans :)
