View Full Version : -Red Lion from Voltron cartoon series- robotic animals rule! :D
03-02-2004, 09:55 AM
I never liked that giant robot Voltron as a kid but those lions were so cool, each with their own unique appearance, style and weapons. I have already made all the lions out of clay and now I wanted to make one in 3d, the red lion is my favourite so I chose to make it first. The red lionsī power comes from fire and itīs lair is situated in a volcano underneath the lava flow, itīs armor is so tough it can withstand the searing heat of molten lava. :D
Well, any comments are greatly appreciated, I am modelling this lion using simple primitives and extended primitives which are mesh edited in accordance to the shapes I want for each part of the model.

voltron 0wnz j00

And whatīs that supposed to mean Sanders?.....
Anyway, hereīs an update I have added the neck and middle torso. Itīs a simple model I know but Iīm just trying to quickly make a decent looking quadroped robot to animate and practice on. The raytraced textures when added will of course make it look twice as good. I will post another update once I have finished the hips which I have already added as a simple box with multiple segments for mesh editing, Iīll also try to finish the tail before the next update.

it means something like:
Voltron rules you ;)
Anyways, nice model :)
04-02-2004, 08:05 AM
you made them out of clay you say?
04-02-2004, 03:45 PM
Thanks guys, Iīm glad you like the lion! :D
Didnīt expect much positive comments on it since itīs not one of my most detailed models... :p
Solidshadow I whipped up a picture of all the five lions for you, they are all made out of normal soft clay.

dude u really love retro cartoons eh....i like voltron too..ahahaha..too bad the voltron series after the lions' kinda lame...vehicles...
anyway...the model's looking good...i would suggest u chamfer the shard edges by a tiny tiny value so it would get some specular highlights when u texture it...
07-02-2004, 07:14 AM
I agree with you on Vehicle Voltron legato, itīs totally lame...
And as for chamfering the edges, itīs a really good idea....if I knew how. :(
I could use some help with that if itīs not too complicated to explain...
Well hereīs my update, the hips are ready and so is the tail with animated bones.
Iīm not 100% pleased with the shape of the hip area though, still a little too boxy, maybe chamfering the edges or even just adding some Spherify will make it look better.

Better view of the hips and tail:
Gifted for both virtual and real as i can see.
Will you rig it afterwards? Would make a fine animation.

3Dan, thanks for showing an interest in my work. Yes I was planning on making a short animation, perhaps having the lion run with a target camera attached to it at an angle from the front, and do some particle animation with the tailgun firing a beam burst as well. Itīll all become more clear to me once the model is finished. :)

here's what i meant...hope u understand it...the left most is sorta the upper leg of your robot...the right most is what i meant by chamfering the sharp edges...the middle on is the low poly...and i included a close up...i chamfered this once at about 0.2 value...see how much difference a tiny chamfer can do?...:)
08-02-2004, 06:57 AM
Yeah! I do see the difference, thanks alot legato for taking the time to make that explanatory render for me it was a great help. :D
Hereīs a small update then, I chamfered the edges of the upper leg armor as you recommended. :)

Well itīs been about a week since I last posted an update, I apologize for that I should have been working alot harder on this project, Iīve just been busy with my Me-262 model and other non-3d stuff as well these days. I managed to complete the head tonight, still think it might need some touch ups though. C&C please :)
14-02-2004, 12:47 PM
Small update here, I added the raytraced textures Iīll be using in my upcoming animation....
I need some oppinions on the jaws and eyes please, too square?
14-02-2004, 04:52 PM
nice work man....but i think the tip of the jaws should be a little smaller...
15-02-2004, 07:51 AM
Could you explain better please legato, Iīm not completely sure what you mean by that.....I did some meshsmooth on the head and jaws, hereīs two views:
15-02-2004, 09:46 AM
I decided to make the rocket launchers that are attached to the front leg shoulders of the lion(all the lions have these as extra firepower), but Iīm not sure about how they look like, I donīt have any reference pictures of them so I just made a simple version from my memory....I havent seen the voltron episodes for years now so the launchers may not be accurate. I also added some lens glow for the eyes, tell me what you think.
15-02-2004, 09:49 AM
those arent made of modelling clay............
are they?
if so, you did a really great job! 3 thumbs up!
15-02-2004, 07:29 PM
heres what i meant before...hope it helps..
looks great, especially with the new textures! very nice job :)
16-02-2004, 11:13 AM
Hmmm, somehow I thought that was what you meant legato, just wasnīt sure. Allright Iīm going to modify both jaws according to your edit and then Iīll post another render.
Thank you solidshadow and sarN, Iīm glad you like the textures. :)

Good ol days!!
Voltron Defender of the Universe..
Use to love them, and still do..
17-02-2004, 12:49 PM
The good old days are all gone Iīm afraid...just trying to keep them alive in my mind by making animated models. :)
Hereīs a couple of renders from the animation Iīm working on(I havent rendererd anything except single frames right now), I want to have the lion flying over the ocean at sunset, getting attacked by proximity rockets exploding around it and then firing a couple of missiles towards itīs attacker......and now that I think of it, the attacker might very well be one of those red and yellow attackships from the Voltron series....I'll have to start modelling one to finish the animation with. :D
12-07-2004, 12:05 AM
Iīm back after taking a loooong break from 3d, Iīve been too busy gaming online and working to do anything in max. Made a few more renders of the lion, hereīs a couple of renders with the lion sitting down.
12-07-2004, 12:09 AM
A bit too dark maybe, but I like it this way :)
12-07-2004, 07:41 AM
Great Job on the modeling Clay. Are you actually getting the reference from the original toy. I rememebr as the kid I wanted the big die cast metal Voltron Toy. I ended up with the crappy car Voltron small version die cast. LOL!
That Big Voltron toy I remeber some dork selling it for a 100 bucks. later he found out that toy was worth alot more than a measly 100 bucks.
Does anyone remember Voltus 5, he was like the first hugh robot that I remember that combined into a giant robot. But Nobody ever seems to have heard of him.
Oh well. Great Job on the Lion, I think you should Model the Black Lion, and then create Voltron. Yea That would rock. LOL!
But then you have to have a Robo Beast. The one that was an elephant with tank tracks for feet. OK! OK! I'll quit, some how I remember that stuff.
14-07-2004, 04:56 AM
Hey Cyrenn, nice to hear from you again and thanks for the comments. I guess I "should" make more lions to form voltron with, but ehhh.....I just donīt like that dorky looking robot, lol.
I never liked it as a kid even, but those lions were cool, still are.
I might make that black one and even some of the others too.
Right now though I am working on the Doomship, if you remember that was one of the most numerous attack ships the evil empire sent against the Voltron force. Iīll make a thread for it once I have something to show.
Iīm too rusty now, havenīt done any modelling in ages it seems, only been working on random unfinished stuff...I never can seem to finish anything lately, lol. :p
Btw, was that Voltus 5 created out of 3 combined space ships? I remember(slightly) a robot like that I saw on tape as a kid, one blue ship, one red,one orange I think...oh well :)
