Mello!

Just writing a small tutorial on Wings 3D. Its a Wine Glass.

Introduction - Mommy Mommy! What does this button do?

When i start with some new applications. I prefer to make something i'm familiar with. For example a Wine Glass, It uses alot of functions, like bevel, extrude, etc. So you learn the program too. You could think of it like the "Hello World" program in programming.

Although you have your own choices for starters, some people like to make Coke cans, Bottles,Pencils, etc. Its all up to you. :D

The first step when it comes to using a new program is learning the interface(Duh! :p).
Here's an image of the the Wings 3D user interface, with some directions of the windows and buttons - Wings UI (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/681038SP6K/Y4ZPA7PGAXI/JPEG/1076214079//q43w)

Right. Now that you get the vague idea of the interface. Lets talk about some handy Shortcuts :
A - Pressing "a" will center on the current object/face/vertice/edge.
Spacebar- Pressing "spacebar" will deselect all selected objects.
Middle Mouse Button - To tumble the view, using the scrollwheel will zoom in and out. And pressing "Q" will change the camera to Track mode. (be sure to keep out a look on the status bar for more stuff like this)
Right Clicking - Brings up the menu's for various commands.
E - Goes into Edge Selection mode.
F - Goes into Face Selection mode.
V - Goes into Vertice Selection mode.
B - Goes into Body Selection mode.

To see more Shortcut keys in Wings. Click Help>Defined Hotkeys

Right. Here's a small tutorial on making a wine glass to help you get

the idea of modelling in Wings :

Step 1 - Getting the pieces together.

Right click on the scene, and add a sphere. Go into vertice selection mode(Shortcut:v) and select the top and bottommost vertices, Like this - Click on the top and bottom vertices (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/43Y63XYMIB/GC93VGK66DI/JPEG/1076214079//2502).

Right click, and click "bevel", bevel the vertices by about 0.10, like this - Bevel by 0.10 (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/2U2JHT6W6K/SR4FF3P2M85/JPEG/1076214079//l6a3).

Now, Select the edge thats just above the x/y axis, Like this - Select the edge just above the x/y axis (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/89X024N5QV/BD25IRK4U4V/JPEG/1076214079//1x2r)

Hit "L" to perform an edge loop, like this - Perform and edge loop, using "L" (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/R75GFZ6S1Q/44MFDI53OEP/JPEG/1076214080//6frl)

Right click on the scene and click "loop cut", and it will cut the sphere into 2 pieces, like so - And the lord said, "let there be 2 pieces" (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/RAQO8C4G21/63L9Z17Q9B0/JPEG/1076214125//7nti)

Go into body selection mode (Shortcut: B), select the smaller piece of the sphere and right click>Move> Y axis. Move it down by -4.00, like so - Down the hatch! (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/YT7BZ49L7S/755JTRT4Z4P/JPEG/1076214125//fim2)

Step 2 - Let the party begin! (adding details)

Select the smaller sphere, and hit "a" to center on it. Now select the 2 edges in the middle, and hit "L" for an edge loop, like so - Hula Loops! (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/W050383X4M/IE092O1FZIZ/JPEG/1076214126//o16r)

Now right click>Scale uniform by 50%, like so - Starting to look like a base, eh? (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/1FN8A6RI5U/3ONL7Q4Q1RD/JPEG/1076214126//m47w)

Right, now click the topmost faces of the smaller sphere, and the bottom most of the bigger sphere, Like so -Top most faces of small sphere (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/9S49C5MAI3/V5RGJF6Z0D3/JPEG/1076214174//1685),And the bottom most of the big sphere (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/70X3P52Q6N/VFQ99NI11MZ/JPEG/1076214175//ge8v) And right click on the scene and click Flatten > Y.

Right. Now select the big bottom face of the small sphere, and the big top face of the big sphere, Like so - Base Face of small sphere (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/2Y2D2MH9SN/ZODOMAA8487/JPEG/1076214175//75a0),
And the top face of the bigger sphere (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/YYD03O90M2/U5QNSJ2ZKJ8/JPEG/1076214225//vjjp).

Now, right click in hit intrude, intrude it by the amount you think thats right, like so - May i intrude? (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/2K90A7UFV9/13KEN614S6U/JPEG/1076214175//h29u),The big sphere gets intruded (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/1434O7B4N8/XV1R220OP73/JPEG/1076214225//6651).

Select to bigger sphere part, and scale > Y by 200%, Like so - Looking normal yet? (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/MD2N46T2X1/WY6J5W9623B/JPEG/1076214175//9f79)

Now select the small circle you made at the start by beveling the vertices, on the small and big sphere parts, like so - The small circles (http://picserv.beyond-reality.nl/img.php/8127T52782/8WT6O85WQ77/JPEG/1076214224//n3m9).

Now right click>Bridge. And poof! They join! Congratulations. You've made yourself a wine glass, you could use it to drink the champagne!

Thats about it. You should have something looking like this now - Wine Glass (http://m4.picserver.org/~picserve/img.php/4H1U8MTHAG/923B5V14RVT/JPEG/1076214225//kybz).

You can now add in more details, if you like. Have fun! Hope this tutorial helped. Its my first tutorial on a 3d Application. :D
