Yes, do it! It's worth it ;) :P Looks very cool at the moment! I like the expression of the mouth!

[edit] Hey, you're dutch also like me... ;)

not a bad start, but I find his nose looks too much like a reproductive organ.

nice to see a GAMES WORKSHOP type character being made, i've been thinking about making some space marines, or Eldar legions myself

divaid
12-02-2004, 07:40 AM
you should make use games workshop as reference too, they make great models. In fact, I made more things from games workshop. The chariot I made (it's somewhere located on this forum too) is also from GW. meanwhile, I discovered how great it is too post wires (I think it's because of you guys)

MUAHAHAHHA....very subtle Daniel :D :D

Cool!

He needs to look a bit more dumb imo.
And you need to fix your wire, see the encircled pieces, you need to add some edges there, otherwise smoothing won't work that good (it prefers quads)...

yes, i have a large collection of GW stuff, including the full box set of orcs, old ones, and full army of space marines and eldar legions, and all those littl esnotlings that are all discontinued, these are the old lead ones, not the new plastic and pewter ones, boy i could go on and on about all the minatures i have, but i wont. Yes, the nose, hmmmm, a bit organ like, and you must learn about quads in the modeling process, not having the "hangin" vertex. I know it looks better after smoothing, but it wrong, try to always have 4 edges going to one vertex, there are cases where it just about impossible to do so but always try to keep the mesh integrity.

Nice work! BUt he doesn't look like the saxophone player, he looks like a ticked off Gonzo from the Muppet Show. Keep going! I want to see him done!

divaid

I created a simple animation with my trol to see how it will look like in the future (I always do that). plz ignore the hands and the feet, they are just for the pose and are unattached.

Hey is gonzo from the mupet babies! ! ! !

Mr.T
03-03-2004, 09:20 AM
hi, nice concept.

the stomach area annoys me a little bit (i think the musculature needs some more details), it'll be a funny character ;)

divaid
03-03-2004, 09:45 AM
goddamnit will you stop saying he's from the muppet show, he's suppose to look scary, he's one of my army characters. (quess I have to put all my hope in the texture to make it real and scary)

Teyon
03-03-2004, 10:05 AM
Frustrating, I know. Sorry. It's the nose, man.

Anyway, I like the weapon but I think a little more definition in the arms could be done. They come across as a bit rubbery, like the bendable superhero action figures from my youth. I like where you're headed though, he's a very different kind of troll for sure.

nico3d
03-03-2004, 10:35 AM
hahaha I'm sorry, even though I really like your character I don't think he scares at all........ he looks more like a love maker (with his penis shaped nose) rather than a guts eater.....

but as you said, maybe with a torn skin, lacerated texture, ulcers and bruises, blood stains, will look more terrifying.

divaid
03-03-2004, 11:15 PM
he's almost finished. I think I redo the hands and make them more detailed. The head is also unattached. But plz compare it with my reference (somewhere located at the start of this thread) and tell me what you think. NO MUPPET POSTS!

Teyon

The center of the abdominal muscles needs to come closer together.Acording to your ref, if you look really close just under the bone necklace, you can see that his abs come together down the center of his body.

Oh, and the arms and forearm are still not as detailed as they are in the ref. Are you planning to use bump maps to complete the look?

divaid
04-03-2004, 12:59 AM
certainly, I will make the same texture as in the reference (that means all the blue 'boxes' will be done with a high bump map)

btw what do these following sentences mean?

"The center of the abdominal muscles"

"you can see that his abs come together down the center of his body."

english is not my first language you know :)

thanks

Hi. Sorry about that, I sometimes forget this is a world forum. :) I was talking about the area in the image I attached. If you look, you will notice the difference between your model and the ref you are using. The area on the ref is more defined and closely packed, while yours is a bit more loose and apart. That's all I was trying to express.

I model characters using Rhino3D, which is really bad at textures, so I have had to force myself to put in all those details that we would normal leave for texture work. That's why I asked about the bump maps.

Hmm, Think you forgot the nostrils, btw this model looks like it's not very easy to model highpoly, it wouldn't be as hard to do it lowpoly because those miniatures are small and therefore it doesn't look strange that they're exaggerated (like the nose reaching down below his mouth).

divaid
04-03-2004, 12:22 PM
well these replys made the most sence to me ever:) will do anything about it;)

secobb
04-03-2004, 01:17 PM
I noticed that you did not put wide nostrils on him any reasong for that?

divaid
05-03-2004, 12:41 AM
yeah good notice:cool: I have little problems with the nose strings. But I'm working on it, with the texture and all it will look cooler than this

divaid
05-03-2004, 01:44 AM
little update: 'packed' the abs a little bit, and more detail in the lower arm. I made him also a little bit fatter. Tell me what you think of the model so far

you are totally right when you say the part between the wrist and the thumb looks wrong. :D

Teyon
05-03-2004, 01:59 AM
Hmmm....I think it's better, yes. :) I really need to post more of my stuff up here. I think you've just inspired me to do that....

edit:

One more thing about the abs, they seem to slant down on the outside and point up at the center of the ref...you may (or may not...that's a matter of taste) want to add that look to your model.

divaid
05-03-2004, 02:56 AM
you should! post some stuff, will take a look ;)
anyway, about my model, i'm not modeling my trol exactly like the reference, I just want to make a nice trol:)

secobb
05-03-2004, 04:55 AM
I dont know if this type of problem bothers you but when you look at any sort of biped animal. There largest toe is either in the center of there foot or on the inside of there foot, this is for balence reasons. With you character having a large toe on the outside of his foot as well as the inside that would throw him off balance. I would shorten the outside toe. Thats just me though i always like modeling with function in mind some people just want to make it look cool.

dude, nice tutorial, very 56k friendly!:)

but I'm affraid texturing my trol is not as simple as a box;)

let's say I would unwrap all body parts seperatly, how do I get rid of the seam which will appear between each body part?

and what about the hands, should I unwrap each finger seperatly?
