Hi everybody,

after a long time, i am back again. this time with a model of a courtyard of an old
house. modeling is done in 3ds max 5 and test rendered using only two lights. i'll texture it from tomorrow with proper light setup.

need advice on the design, it's based on a ref picture but i modified the design a lot.

thanks in advance for ur comments

hi NoJo,

thanks for your comments... here is another render after changing the light setup. used GI from 3ds amx, used scanline render. more to come ...

thanks sandiarch and figo for your comments,

nice to see you sandiarch here. i have not finished modeling the structure, some detailing still left and working on those part. also lighting was just a test render.

yes, it took lots of time on designing, ,mainly. thanks for your comments and keep me posted.

I agree with sandiarch that you have to work a bit on the light on the last image... it looks too bright.... great work otherwise!

thanks Nojo,

yes, i will work on the light setup from scratch. before that let me finish the modelling part. here is the final images and modelling is finished according to what i had designed myself. may add some more stuff if required.

thanks for your comments ...

I like your new lighting, it makes it look more like a daytime scene. I think you should do something with the space above the building, like paint a sky. Also what kind of texture are you going to put on the building.

Nice work mate,

I have just started doing buildings etc and was wondering what modeling tecknique you are using and how you did the windows? eg the window frames etc etc....

I'm wondering the same thing. Also, how did you get the edges to look so smooth and curvy (as opposed to sharp edges)? Chamfer? Great work! I wish there were some tutorials out there that showed how to make buildings and stuff.

thanks deejaysoup, d03boy and dug for your comments ...

yes i'' add a sky when i'll finish the texturing, lots of task that is.

i mostly used loft, lathe, nurbs and normal poly modeling from 3ds max5. the windows are created using loft surface. just add the section and a path curve, that's all.

yes, that's another way of texturing. i prefer this method and gives the untextured scene also a good look.

WOW! Pradipta this is great. Great modeling and lighting. Is this max scanline render? How do u do the lighting. Can u give me some idea of how to setup lights for outdoor scene like this. Hope that is not going to be too much problem.

Looking for more update.

pradipta
08-03-2004, 11:27 PM
thanks SueL and saby for your comments,

nice to know you all liked my lighting setup. i used the 3ds max 5 scanline renderer, since it is fast and can produce almost mental ray or final renderer quality rendering for out door scene but requires more and more tweaking. i am writing a tutorial on the lighting of outdoor scene using 3ds max 5 scanline renderer and hope it will be published in the tutorial section.

thanks again ...

Oh, yes, I do like it, it's very, very nice. :)

A couple of things I noticed: The sides of the curved stone pieces by the stairs might need a different UV mapping method to follow the curve.

Are there some holes in the floor where the drain pipes end? Where does the water flow? The other thing about the drain pipes is that you might want to make them a little rustier and/or dirtier.

Those are just little details, but the whole image is very nice. I love the modeling work you did, and the texturing and lighting are very nice, too. :)

pradipta
16-03-2004, 01:46 AM
thanks SueL for your comments,

yes, some uvw maps are not properly aligned. i have to check that. yes, the drain pipes need more rusty and dirty exterior.

i am working on the texturing now.

thanks again for your comments,

Hey Pradipta,
yaar your work is looking really nice man...
i love the texturing you did... lekin yaar
the monotone you used kills the interest in it!

colors would really make it excellent scene
this just what i think

keep up the good work...and keep us updated
with it :)

changed the texturing of the scene, the sky is not added.
some portions corrected ...

Looks good! You've made a very nice improvement, it has more depth now. I guess you're still going to work on those curved sections by the stairs?

Sue

g69
20-03-2004, 03:23 PM
looks good, but its too dark brown now...
and looks as if the materials have been repeated...

may be some white walls, some other textures of pillars...some metal textures....some wood material on the doors... would make a difference... i know its still a WIP so still waiting for updates! :)

good work so far, keep us updated

Marcia
21-03-2004, 05:02 AM
It does look better, but all your columns appear to have the same texture in the same position; the transitions between colors could be a bit more subtle in many places; and the rougher textures could be refined or reduced in size just a bit because they call too much attention to themselves. I won't hit on the stair issue.

The modeling is great, but the aging is not so convincing, imo. Keep working at it... this has the potential to be fantastic.

pradipta
22-03-2004, 09:14 AM
thanks marcia and g69, i am working to get a different look for the scene and some more updates, still working on to get a acceptable textures,

thanks for any comments...

the modeling looks great,i think you could use better textures and unwrapped hi-res maps for the walls.the textures look a little big in proportion to the scale of the model.and the lighting is a bit saturated i guess.i hope that helps
jawahar

pradipta
22-03-2004, 10:11 AM
thanks jawahar,

yes, you'r right. i am wokring on to get a final render very soon, changesd the scale of the textures and also using a better uvw mapping technique, lets' see, will post tomorrow

Kinda looks like the 28 days later mansion (kinda) like it gives you that feel, can you mkae the sky dark (at night) and like a very gloomy shadow on the building, that would look COOL!

the shadows, and light are looking much better in the latest render you posted... the glass on the doors look good as well...

lekin Pradip. yaar try to lighten up the door materials...
try applying lights to only those area (doors included under light setup, include/ exclude)

its a nice improvement... but as far i think, u need to
do somthing about the brown colors...
try different material settings for walls!

i hope i make sense :)
Keep it up man, waiting for more :)

I made a little screenshot to explain what bothers me about the texturing on the parts by the stairs, I hope you don't mind. :)
I think the texture of the sides of the top panels should follow the curve, like I show in my little insert. Also, on the sides of the lower panels, it seems like there's a non-seamless texture wrapped around and where the two sides of the texture meet you have a high contrast area. Also, one can see that you used the same texture for all three curved parts. It would be better if the textures were positioned differently so they wouldn't all look the same.

About the texturing of the building, I think that it might be better to decide first where this building is and what you want to convey with the image. If this building is in a hot climate, I think it's probably better to have light colored walls. If it's in a more moderate climate, in a busy city, and the building is not maintained very well, the walls could be pretty dark and dirty.
The other thing that you might want to think about is where those stains and dirty parts would be on a building. Right now it seems a little random. Are you familiar with the www.dvgarage.com site? They have interesting videos about these kinds of issues in the "observations" area (http://www.dvgarage.com/garage/a2d/obs/obspast/obspast.php)
You can watch the videos online and see some examples of where dirt and stain would form on a building.

The modeling is really great, and the lighting is very nice, too. It just needs a little more work on the textures. :)

thanks Jason-Lavoie and g69 for your comments,

i am working on to improve the wooden work of the scene, like you said the door and windows also. i have to do some test render to see what color suits best with such walls, i'll do it.

i didn't see the 28 days movie, is it a movie Jason-Lavoie. do you have any pictures of that palaces from the movie, just in case you have would you post that here?

thanks

thanks a lot SueL for taking time to write such a nice review, i read that few times and it's been do helpful to me. i am working on the points you mentaion, thanks again ...

matter regaring the wall color is also very important depending on th elocation, it didn't strike me,

pradipta, your image has improved a lot since the begining of the thread....

I would work more on the lighting. It is the only aspect that I'd enhance ....

what system are you using to illuminate?

BTW, I love your image cos it makes me remember of your beautiful city. I've been there three years ago and it was a very enriching experience to me ! ;)

pradipta
30-03-2004, 04:55 AM
thanks nico3d for your writing, nice to see you

i am using the scanline rederer of 3dsmax 5with two lights other than the skylight. i have mental ray but not got much time to experiment with that. i am not also satisfied with the light setup and in the quest for more enhancement.

it's really nice that you came to visit calcutta, yea, it's a nice city woth lots of old palaces, next time when you come to visit our city don't forget to inform me ...

Hi Pradipta,
I see you made some changes, that's great. But why do you have that white area on the wall (second floor)? Is that in the texture, or from the light?

I'm not sure about the broken pipe, but the rest of the image looks really good. :)

Sue

P.S. The structures by the stairs look much better, but I would turn down the specularity a bit and maybe put some dirt there, too. :)

pradipta
31-03-2004, 10:38 AM
thanks Suel, the white area is from the textures, the reflectance value of that area was too high, i reduced that now and is working some more updates, yse, the stair needs some more dirt ... thanks for commening ...

That looks great, Pradipta! I like the paving much, much better. Is that just texture and bump, or did you model the tiles?

pradipta
22-04-2004, 03:43 AM
hi, Suel, nice to hear from you. the paving is part model and part bump texture. before applying the bump i mofrled the tiles to get a more prominent look of shadow. after that i applied bump.

Hi pradipta, great modeling. Excellent render.

I think maybe decrease the light intesity a little. Just enough to remove the bright wash out spots on the left side of the structure.

Good work, keep it up.:)

SueL
26-04-2004, 10:37 AM
I agree, the light is a little too intense on the left side. What kind of light are you using there? You could lower the intensity of the light or you could lower the diffuse settings of the texture in those areas.

I'm not sure about those green spots, they look a little too bright green to me. They look a little bit like moss or something like that. I'm not sure if water damage would be green up on a wall unless there's some plant growth there. I would probably try brown or grey or some other similar color there. Also, a water damage would probably have a shape that indicated that water had been running or dripping down the surface. The other thing I notice about them is that they repeat in several places and I think that doesn't look very natural.

Another idea I have about the texturing is that maybe you could put some dirt at the bottom of the curved structures by the stairs; they look a little too clean compared to the other parts of the building.

I like those weeds/grass growing between the tiles! :)

pradipta
26-04-2004, 11:04 PM
thanks ronrn,

yes, in some part the intensity seems to high for the scene. i'll work on the light more to remove the washout.

pradipta
26-04-2004, 11:09 PM
nice to hear from you SueL,

yes, i will work on that light intensity now. i am using only three lights, one direct and two omni for the bounce and using the Light Tracer from 3ds max5.

those green patches are not looking right, i will replace them with some darker gray or brown moss and water marks. i am working on for the next render.
