Hi All,
This is Mabel, a photo real charcter I am working on. She is the pilot of a Messerschmitt BF 109 G fighter plane. I have done a lot of research into the uniforms and gear pilots of that era wore. And soon she will have a body, flight suit, jacket, gloves, boots, parachute and harness, and a life preserver, and of course a plane. I wanted to post what I had done so far to get some feedback. Hope you like it. C and C always welcome. I am going to redo the eyes.

Bunglo, thanks, if you like I have schematics and lots of pics plus digital luftwaffe and allied color swatches. If you are interested I can e-mail them to you. I would like to see your ME 262 though. Here is an update. I have to tweak her body a whole bunch. I am trying to give her that figure 8 kinda look. C and C?

But keep working!

IdownupI, I changed her breast a bit. I don't want her to have those huge breasts you see on a lot of 3D female characters, let me know if you think that looks better. Finished her boots. Now on to her flight suit.

Update. The right side of the pants is a reference, I will copy the left side when I am ready and tweak the right to make them both wrinkle a bit different before I weld them together. Anybody have any crits, I would like some c and c, please.

Good WIP so far.
I don't know if it is just me, but it looks like a male head on a female body. I think the jaw line is to sharp. Try to soften the angle(of the Jaw bone) in both the front and profile view.

Anima8tor2d, thanks I will try that. A few people have metioned that actually. I used a photo of a freind and to me it kinda looks like her, but after reading your comment, I realized I did make the jaw too sharp. I will tweak it later today.

And yet another. I could really use some feedback though, come on guys and gals, don't hold back. Comments and crits, good or bad, they all help us to achieve a better end result, and help us to learn new things, and maybe fix things we miss. This is my first character of my own, and I think she looks good. But, what do you think?

Hey, it's me again talking about the hand. I think you can work the finger shape. They look to cilindrical.
Eira30
28-02-2004, 08:52 AM
I meant to fix that yesterday, but did not get around to it. Today I will fix her hand. I was having troubles because I was tweaking it after I attached her hand to her arm. So I will detach her hand and align it, so I can work on it properly. Thanks Ignanacho, I would have procrastinated about her hand until the last minute.

It looks much better, i think you only have a problem with the thumb.
Eira30

Do think it looks too flat? I played around with the shape, looked at my own thumb a lot. I'll see if I can fix that today. Thanks Ignanacho.

The problem that i saw is the conection betwen the thomb and the hand. Maybe I'm wrong.
Eira30
29-02-2004, 04:39 PM
No, you're right. I was trying to make that bulge of skin and muscle that is there. How the skin is kinda taught at the top of the hand extending to the medial aspect of the thumb. But I will do it in texturing, and with a bump and displacement map instead, because it seems to pinch it in meshsmooth. What do you think?

Update. A nice pair of gloves. The seams along the side of the glove and extending along the fingers I will add when I do textures, using a displacement map, or a bump map.

I need some help. I need to light the scene, and I suck at lighting. Any tips on a simple lighting scheme would be appreciated. I tried lighting it with three lights, 2 front at 45 degree angles, and one behind with a negative value. But I don't think it looks good. Anyways, any help would be nice.

Try and find the Toy Story DVDs. They have a good section on lighting in the bonus materials.
Hear are a few things I do.
1. Use warm and cool colored lights. (warm lights bring objects to the front, cool lights push them into the background)
2. Never forget reflective light
3. It's not lighting, more like painting shadows.
4. Use a very dark complementary color(in ref. to it's Light) for the shadows.
5. Shadows have light in them to.
As far as placing lights, it all depends on the scene.
Here is a sample of my methods.

Okay, I read some tutorials, and tried lighting the scene best I could. My knowledge of lighting is basic, something I plan on reading up on. Anyways, I just wanted something to paint the scene a bit better than Max default lighting, give Mabel some more depth. So here's what I came up with.

Can you post a close up of the pants...those folds look really really strange to me....like the pants are balloon-y but they stick to her ****** area and the folds should go mostly horizontally I think instead of up and down, unless the pants are cinched at the waist and stuff.
Eira30
04-03-2004, 02:20 PM
The pants are pleated on the top at the waist, and they fall in a real strange way. And they is a bulge in the pant that wraps around the back. Here is one of the refs I used. I am going to fix the ****** area.
