"The Adventures of Nerm and BG" is my first animated short. I created it solo over a year and a half while attending school. Made in 3D Max. It was a blast to make, and I'd love to hear everyone's comments. Download the movie, the still image doesnt do it justice. =)
Requires divx to play of course

I am downloading it now...
edit--> Damn, the download failed twice when it got to around 15 megs on my crappy slow dial-up. I'm going out to the pub now so I'll have to try again tomorrow. The still shots here and on your site look awsome!

Hey Chris, this was well worth a watch. Very nice lighting , decent models, nice sense of humour & good animation & characterization. Loved it.

Totally loved it, 2 thumbs up mate.
The sound could use a little work though, it wouldn't get a THX cert. Other then it was funny as heck.
I think you should submit this to Sundance. :)

Great stuff man, definitely worth watching twice or more :)
I love how you have all the background robots and creatures moving around and doing stuff. My only complaint is when he first shoots the gun, the previous scene that purple person was standing there, then he shoots that crab thing's leg...there's only a few seconds for the purple person to move outta the way, kinda "unrealistic" IYKWIM (if you know what i mean)

Great animation, loved the lighting and textures.
3 mods giving it a thumbs up is good enough praise for anyone
The big eyed child robot is genius, the fact that he blinked so much made it for me, you really captured the anoyying energy of youth.
The only bad point other than the afore mentioned sound was the pink robot at the start, I felt her walk was too much like a glide.
they need a smilie for thumbs up i'd give 9.5/10
Great job :Dd Its going into my archives. :D

Now....that...was...HILARIOUS!!!!!...rotflol...the only crit I have is the voice of the kid. THe voice fit him well but at some points it seemed like the person doing the voice breathed in the microphone real heavy in some parts.

Ha Ha Ha! That’s so funny! That’s a great short! Every part is so genius. I especially like all the giant robots on the road in the background and the lollypop and the gun and the robots in the beginning and the robots in the end and when the one robot shoots the other robots leg off, that was the coolest! And the lights and color! Oh and I can’t forget the little robot. Cool short man!

You know its amazing how deaf you guys are. I mean yes the animation was cool but it was far from profesional with the recording of the kid robots voice. You guys look at detail and if it looks pretty its good enough for you. But I seriously think the voice should be redone on the little character because as far as I know robots dont breath, and the when that breathing does happen in the mic it just ruins the whole animation for me. I hope you take this in consideration Chris_rw. I give a 2/5 because you could have taken more time on the recording process of the kids voice.

bullethead,
We all mentioned the recording wasn't that great, last I checked though forums.3dtotal.com was a 3d related website, not audio.
It was funny, well modelled, well lite and if he redoes the sound this would be one top notch animation.
Not everyone has access to thousands of dollars worth of audio recording equipment... Heck, if we could afford DATS, studio condenser microphones and a sound studio with sound proof walls, we wouldn't be posting our work here, we'd be making big bucks, sipping our starbucks driving around in our BMW's while others do the petty work for us.

Thank you for all your replies!
I realize the sound is not the best, but I am an animator, not a sound guy. I did the best I could at the time. Personally, I think its satisfactory for being a college level animation (which is what this is). But I definetly hope to get better as I progress with new animations.
Im glad that your only issues is with the sound. Its the only aspect of the animation that I did not do (well, I did the recording of the voice, someone else did sound effects). =)
Thank you for all your comments, they mean a lot!

man, that was genius. I was laughing all the way through it. Your hard work really paid off, even if the sound wasn't that great. Hey, you're an animator, not a sound guy. ;) :p . Good job.

I personally say the audio killed the animation for me. I mean the graphics were great, how everything moved was great. But put this into perspective. Lets say theres a new girl singer out there, she goes on stage, shes tottaly hot, I mean blazing hot, and the way she moves is killer, then she starts to sing and its crap. soon you start to forget about how hot she looks, and the way she moves, soon you just start thinking about how terrible her voice is and how bad you wish you could turn her voice off.
Yes not everyone has a big time recording studio but there is software out there that is available to people with out money to edit like the pros do. and anyways. I feel if you can afford the money for the app you are using you can afford a good recording setup for your animations.
Just because threedy is a 3d site doesnt mean that people should neglect the audio aspect of animations. Audio is a key and big role in the anims to make em believable. if you have crap audio then it will show the amount of effort you put into it.

You are absolutely wrong because you just described Britney Spears and everyone seems to still like her.

I just love how your telling me that my OPINION is wrong. thanks a bunch for telling me that my thoughts and feelings are wrong. and for your info I dont like britney spears because I despise musicians that lip sync. makes me sick. so since your calling my opinion wrong Ill say your reply is absulotly wrong because almost everyone doesnt like britney spears. how does it feel?

Wow, another retarded arguement that has no good reason. Guys, shut up, you aren't contributing to this thread so take it elsewhere.

now your saying my opinions are retarded. I wish people would think before they post in these forums. Your post has no contribution to this thread whatsoever anyways because you are bashing anothers opinion on what they think is wrong with the animation. And let me ask how my crits on the audio arent contributing. I am contributing, because the audio IMO was horrible. And its the little things that matter that make things great. My response on Birttney spears wasnt retarded either, I dont see how it was. Please think before you post and READ everything carefully.

I though the animation was very good and the sound, not top notch, but pretty damb good. It gets the story across. I think it would be much deferent without it.

i think the voice worked, maybe the breathing into the microphone near the beginning was a bit odd but it worked for me :D, and the animation and story was great-especially the heavy music cutting in :D :) i must admit it would have been nice to see a bit more scenery though :p

i was not able to watch this short, however, by the amount of comments on the sound, i was wondering what kind of college are you in? where exactly is it, because if, in the future, you are looking for somewhere to pre-record voice overs, an art college with a strong emphasis in 3d animation might be a good place to look. that is unless you want to spend a lot of money to go to a professional place..
another idea is to by one of those round screens that go in front of the microphone. those catch the outside noise and basically toss it out. im in a band and that is what our singer uses when she is recording for our cd's
best of luck to your future recordings, and hopefully i can watch your short soon;)
