Well I decided to move onto a new project so I can have a break from the Ford Focus WRC. I decided to model a cartoon looking monkey. I just have the main shape started but i thought i would post a pic

I know his not all that detailed but i want to make a fun looking character. I think i will make some big goofy hands to go with the big head..
more to come

I had some time tonight to work on the arms and hands. I'm not sure if their too big or not. After doing a render i noticed they look a little flat in areas so I will round them out when i get a chance.
Tell me what you think
RodrigoRosa
09-03-2004, 04:52 PM
imo is too big.....

looks cool...nice character..god job!, the hands look a little big though, but i dont know monkeys do actually have large hands...
bradjames
10-03-2004, 01:55 AM
Well i made some adjustments to the body last night so the arms may not look as big. I think once I attach the head the arms won't look as big either.
Thanks for the comments guys and there will be more to come soon.

Ok so I decided to attach the head to get a general feel for him. I think his head might be a little big. Let me know what you think guys.

bradjames, can you put the camera a little above? 'cause i can't see the hands properly...
keep up the good work

:dance:I like the size of the head on your monkey. I think that big feet would also suit him well.

lets all go banana crazy...ahhaa
Thanks alot for the post guys and I've very happy with the way the character is coming along. One thing i have to figure out is how to do the eyes or should i even put them?
I like the idea of the big feet so I will work on that next.
Heres a render of the hands. I'm sure they will look better once I change their position a little.

The thumb needs work. Otherwise you have an awesome character going. He looks like a genuine poo throwin' banana grubbin' maniac :) .
bradjames
11-03-2004, 12:23 AM
well thank you very much Phynius Gauge. I was just wondering what you think i should do with the thumb? Should it be longer?
thanks again for the comments guys. More to come later tonight. I can't do much at work

I really like your monkey too. Keep up the great work. I agree that he definitely needs big feet.
Another idea...seeming as everyone is going banana crazy...maybe in the end he should be eating a banana or something...he is a monkey afterall. :)

Bradjames : The one thing i see on the hands is that all the fingers are the same length. I would make them diferent lengths. The middle is the longest followed by the index, closley followed by the ring, then finaly the pinky. I would like to see eyes on him that would give him more character.

Just check out your own hand (you do have hands right? :p ). I know its not a realistic character but you should base the basic form off a real hand and work from there. I think the fingers
need to be adjusted to have variating lengths as seccob said, and also be a bit more round.
bradjames
11-03-2004, 04:06 PM
thanks again guys for the comments. I took everyones advice on changing the length of the fingers. I'm not sure if its enough of a contrast thought.
I didn't get much time on the modelling tonight because i'm getting ready for my new PC components. I'm getting a new case (X-Alien), P4 2.8 800FSB, and a new motherboard. I can't wait.
anyways heres a new post of the bottom part of his hand. I also worked on the eyes but i'm not finished yet so I won't post anything on them.

I would make the pinky even shorter, and i noticed that he has no pit in his armpit.

Ok well i added a pair of eyes but their hard to see because of the shadow created by the eyebrow area. I also added an ear but i don't really like it and i;m having trouble coming up with an idea on its shape. Anyone have any ideas. Oh and I also started the legs but they need some work also.
check it out
Phynius Gauge
15-03-2004, 11:33 PM
Lookin good. The ear might turn out better if you lower it a bit, make it larger, and make it more round and smooth.

Anyone have any ideas about the feet. I tried a couple different shapes but i don't like them. Anyone have an idea
Phynius Gauge

Make him have big feet so they flop around when he walks :p :) .
bradjames
22-03-2004, 05:59 AM
Ok well after like a million tries at the feet i decided to go with some plain looking feet. the only problem i have right now is that they overlap when the legs are straight ahead. I will work on that later. i also did some adjustments on the ears. This week i will tweak a little and then add some textures.

Hi geoMan,
Yes i remember that little guy but like many things I start I didn't finish him.
I'm not sure what you mean by the lower lip. Any chance you could explain it a little different or take my picture and point out what you mean.
Thanks
RodrigoRosa
22-03-2004, 12:03 PM
my suggestion is to make his leg more long..
cheers
bradjames
22-03-2004, 03:41 PM
Thanks for the suggestion and I will look into that.
Does anyone else have any suggestions before I start to texture this guy.
bradjames
23-03-2004, 12:09 PM
Ok i made the legs a little longer and I also made a crease between the upper lip. I think it might need to be a litte more defined because its hard to notice.
RodrigoRosa
23-03-2004, 01:07 PM
well, i would make the legs on the same length of his arm and use the same definition used on the elbow on the knee... just one more opinion...
keep up the good work
peace

Hi RodrigoRosa
I will work on the knee...I'm not sure about the legs because i want the arms to drag on the ground a little when he walks.
Man without you i don't know if i would get any replies...ahahah
Thanks and I will work on the banana soon.

hi rubberduck, thanks for your comments....i completely agree with you, but i'm very stuck on what to do. I've tried a few different styles but can't come up with one that fits. Do you have any suggestions?
thanks in advance
have u tried sticking some hands on in place of feet??
bradjames
24-03-2004, 04:40 PM
I took your advice Borg and did the feet kind of like th hands. Let me know if you guys like these better then the others and any changes you would like to see.
Thanks again for the advice.

imo the inferior part of the leg (below the knee - anyone could tell me the right term of it?) should be more thin...

25-03-2004, 05:01 AM
thanks for the advice and i will work on it tonight. Anything else you guys can see thats not right on this little guy?

25-03-2004, 06:44 AM
About those feet;) Needs some more tweaking IMO, here's how I made my feet for my monkeys
bradjames
25-03-2004, 07:20 AM
man those feet rock rubberduck...any chance you have ref material that i could go by to make something like those.
By the way guys this is only the second character i've created so be patient with me and give me any advice you can.
Thanks

Thanks guy, I don't really have any good ones, only these few ones that I used to look at when I made mine, I just searched in google for cartoon monkeys, since that was the look that I was going for;)

Ok, had a little spare time, so I did this little tut for ya
This is LightWave, but you should be able to do the same in 3DSMax.
1:Make a box like the one in the picture, bevel out the 3 selected polys 3 times and a fourth time, but do it smaller(pic 1 & 2).
2:Now select the poly that's going to be the thumb/big toe and bevel it out the same way(pic 3).
3:Now select some points and move them around to shape the beginning of the ankle/wrist(pic 4) and bevel it out 3 times
4:In picture 5 I have turned subpatch on(not sure what's called in Max), but in LightWave you can switch back and forth any time while you're working on a model and so now you just need to do some tweaking on it to shape it, so that it looks more like a foot or hand, hope this will help you out some;)

Nice work so far!
Cheers to you too, rubberducky, way to go. :)
I think he would look overall funnier if his legs were longer than his chest&belly, giving him a more cartoonish look and some additional freedom for animation.

Now, that's better Brad and if you make them a little bigger too;)

Thanks a lot for your comments and help RodrigoRosa. I think this little guy is about done and ready for the textures. I'm just waiting on a cd i ordered from Digital-Tutors that teaches uv texturing in Maya because i've never done it before.
