Looks really good to me. I used to have one of these, in sky blue. Ran like your typical bug, but what a gorgeous body.

thanks for the comment man. I am working on the rims and the bumper as well as the inside.

Welcome to the forums.
Interesting choice. I made one myself, you can check the thread here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11964&highlight=Karmann) , it has great feedback from members who own/owned the car.
Care must be taken with the window frames which are now too rounded, also check out the front intakes which are straight in their baseline. Minor tweaking around will put it into shape.

And lastly i believe Marcia is a she ;)

Thanks for the tips. I know i need to fix the windows i did those really quick. As for Marcia. I am sorry but i have the habbit of saying man all the time.

i saw your karmann ghia and i must say it looks great. I can only hope mines turns out like that. I do have a few questions for you. How did you create your wheels? How did you create the vents in the trunk? I thanks again man for your help.

o and what do you mean "check out the front intakes which are straight in their baseline. Minor tweaking around will put it into shape." thanks again

LOL. I am a she, but since there are so few of us doing 3D (statistically speaking, anyway), I'm used to being lumped in with the guys generically. No big deal. ;)

Dan, your karmann turned out great. It looks much classier in those colors than it did with a sky blue repaint. Sure wish I had that car back.

On page 4 there is a brief explanation and an img of the vents. As for the intake i mean their lower side. They are more trapezoidal with round corners.
As for the wheels, i have created a shape of the tire and hubcap, then lathed and finally converted it to poly. The tread is textured.
Now waiting for updates.

Looks good so far. Don't worry if you don't get comments, I've had entries that have only ever had one reply.

Thanks MAdEinUK1 for the comment appreciate it. I am trying to smooth out my shape of the car to get rid of a few dents in the mesh. Does anyone have a technique on how to do this? I am just pulling verts. I just want to know if this is the most efficient way of doing it.

StationMiek: I just love how detail you model your cars and keep them looking realistic. Could you spare any advice on how to keep the are smooth. THanks.

Hey everyone back with an update. The window thickness is way off just extruded all edges to add depth to my seams. Will fix that as well as the bottom of the door. If you guys and gals see anything else wrong please tell me. Thanks.

Another update fixed the bottom door and the back window area still needs some tweaking but overall its coming along great....I think since no one has left me any comments. I hope to get some constructive criticism soon. Thanks.

wow that does look tough, show us a wire, so that we can figure out what to do based on what you have. Im thinking you could use the connect button in edge mode, so that max could divide into the sections you need then you just do the editing.

Not much but trying to get an idea of what to do.

LOL np I will just spend a few hours trying new things and maybe come across a good way. Thanks though

Tuss4
19-03-2007, 02:02 AM
well there might be the equivalent of a "connect" button in maya but this is my idea, if you can figure that out, you could chamfer the edges created and just align the vertices as necessary, see the picto understand what i mean by "connect"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/goku112/whiteboyedit.jpg

im suggesting this, because it would be too easy to goof up doing those by hand, so rather let the software come up with an automatic approximation i gues s it is laziness lol :haha:

whiteboy
19-03-2007, 02:17 AM
Tuss4: Yea I can use the edge split tool to create those line or just the cut tool. Was trying to do it to where my mesh wouldnt get so dense but looks like there is no other way. Thanks for the help buddy.

no prob. and i feel your pain dude i was going to suggest also using a map but i dont know how to do that look into it though

DarkSniper3D
19-03-2007, 03:12 AM
Oh my that does look tricky. If this were in 3ds i would model the truck as a seperate object from the car body. Make the trunk a FLAT plane and make the nessesary cuts that you need in order to make the vents. Your mesh will be very dense, but this is where the bend modifier comes in action. One bend in the direction of the x axis and another bend modifier in the y axis should give the trunk the perfect curve it needs without nasty bumps by doing it manually. Then you can collapse the modifiers and attach the trunk back to the car body.

I just hope maya has something similar to a bend modifier.

whiteboy
19-03-2007, 03:19 AM
Thanks DarkSniper3D, The trunk is a separate mesh I will try to do what you said in maya. They have similar tools. Thanks for the tip.

Hey man,

I think there is something funny on the roof shape, maybe close edgeloops around the windscreen and backlight will help.
I see you are slamming this baby down... The moon hubcaps do look killer!

whiteboy
19-03-2007, 06:47 PM
3Dan: First off glad to see your still modeling those classics. As for the roof I already adjusted the verts on the roof it is smoothed out now. I will post a new render soon. Just want to figure this vent problem out.

    Finally I figured out a way to keep the mesh down and have all quads with help from 3Dan. Hurray geez after a day of playing around with it but hey it was a learning experience.
Here is what it had looked like

Nice job man :) Now you can use something similar to a bend modifier to give it a nice curve.

whiteboy
20-03-2007, 06:48 AM
Yeap maya has a soft modification tool that did the job for me. Here is the trunk . The seam in the middle is because I didnt weld the two halves together. Going to hit the bed my eyes hurt :hurt: :hurt: Comments are welcome as always.

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/4683/trunkdz1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

After looking at that image do you all think i need to give the vents a bit more arc?

3Dan
20-03-2007, 02:59 PM
Ah, I see Maya lacks the precious Symmetry modifier that auto-welds all inner veertices...
I would suggest you tweak the second outermost vent cut to follow the curved vents' shape, before you do the bending.

sarN
20-03-2007, 07:15 PM
wow i would love to know about that soft modification. im always afraid to make the lovres because its hard to keep the mesh under control when bending it.

Hello everyone,
Time for another update. Did the bumpers and side trim. Still need the Ghia Emblem, logo on the engine hood, and windshield. Then I need to weld both halfs together and tweak the mesh some more. Wish maya had symmetry tool. Anyways C&C are welcome.

wow! did you model that separately and then bend it to the car?

whiteboy
27-03-2007, 01:40 AM
Hey Tuss4 thanks for the comments. As far as the logo goes; The logo took me about 20min or so I did the curves in Illustrator then just imported into maya and did a beveled plus on them. Then I just did cuts on the front face to make all quads with one or two tris. Other then that was extremely easy. I was surprised myself at how easy it was.

Good progress! Indeed.

Now you must either raise the roof or lower the windscreen and backlight so the roof can have adjacent faces to the top of the glass panels. Sorry if this is unclear. Let's say the roof should not start horizontal, it must follow the glass panel lines then go horizontal.
Rest is pretty much ok! :!!!:

Well dont have an update...a friend showed me Modo and I have to say I am in love after I finish the emblem and texture the car. I will focus more in Modo. I will still use Maya in my workflow its just that Modo has awesome poly tools. So going to do the emblem and work on finishing the exterior only of this car. Thanks for everyones support and I will update soon.

I just received an email from my wife a week ago stating that she wants a divorce. This took me by surprise since I thought our marriage is going good. I am depressed like hell and trying to figure out what I did wrong. Anyways I am starting to get back to work on the car. Thanks to Dan for the pep talk and the inspiring work of his.
