I realised late last week that I needed to add this assembly for a scene i'm working on.
gathered the data on-line thanks to some very helpful people.
Modeled it out yesterday - kind of fun.
Of course, i'm rarely done with anything.
But, this is way more than i need for what i have in mind.
so I'm calling it done ;)
of course, it could be improved

as for "getting refs"
Not realy a skill.
But, I have been involved with the on-line WW1 Aviation community for a quite a while now.
You get to know people.
so I just beg ;)
Personaly, I HATE research
best to find somebody who has done it already.
If you are going to do "historicly acurate" work like this,
I highly reccomend getting involved with a community.
You get source material, they get pretty pictures
everybodies happy
thanks for the comments

Ok
I will never say something is finished ever again
Because it's like a curse.
turns out the bombs on the Camel at the Krackow museum are plastic dummies.
And bad ones at that.
which means - my images are all wrong because that is what i based this on :(
I recieved more accurate data.
And have remodeled the bombs.
I'll rerender and replace the above images.
can't leave those on-line.
somebody might believe me
Ive remodeled the bombs
Textures need work as they are kind of stretched
But this is pretty close

Well, I would say the work is OK but the spring looks like it is triangle and not completely round plus there is a screw missing from under the thinga-majigy next to the widget. Without that the .................................OMG I love all your work.

Indeed I am. The "Sunrise Dam Gold Mine Drinking Team".
After a shaky 2002 season, we came back with flying colours @ the 2003 christmas party!!! We beat Mt. Keith Gold Mine by a K.O.!!
Then we were all arrested for being drunk and rowdy.
But it was worth it.
My boss is still recovering. He can't drink bourbon anymore.
The poor guy. :(

That's some serious detail you got there, great work.
Looking forward to a render with the new bombs.

All done
or at least it's done untill somebody shows me it's wrong.
Which is all too likely.
Color ref was some pretty poorly exposed museum photos.
so it is a little difficult to tell the saturation.
but the basic hue should be ok
in any case
I spent way to much time on this assembly
but it is pretty cool

Hmmmmmm....as long as you're working on it again... ;) :D
You'll get an even more realistic look if you randomize some of your maps a bit. For example, you have the same rust spot in the same place on all of these doohickeys (as you can see, I'm up on my technical terms, lol):

Hi Artchick
yeah, your definitly right
But, I think the worst repetition is on those
ummm... flat doohickeys that keep the props from turning.
yeah, I don't know what to call a lot of these things either ;)
same map too -
I think it was originaly called goblinmet.jpg
good map - gets a lot of use though.
Truth is
I need to produce some cover art for a WW1 aviation mag of sopwith camels on a ground attack mission.
That was the original motivation for modeling this thing
And I took it WAAAAY further than i ever needed to.
But, I had the data - and it is a cool mechanism
so i went a little nuts.
but, I doubt much of this will ever be visible in the end
Thanks for the suggestion

Hey, doesn't Snoopy fly a sopwith camel?

yes, I believe he did.
But, I seem to remember some inaccuracies :D

Hi Mark
You might rotate each propeller a little so it won't look as if they were simply cloned. The same applies to the bombs themselves.
Great job as usual. So how's the Nieuport 17?

Hi Dan
the Nieuport is on hold until I get this cover art done.
deadline is april 1.
so i have to stop obssesing over details and start rendering. :D
But, as soon as this piece is done.
I'll be back on the Nieuport.

This is great! Looking forward to a peek at the Nueport...I have a 1/2 finished Fokker in one of my folders. Anyway, the only crit (which is probably irrelevant since it won't even show up in your final render after it is mounted) was that the bomb 'clip' passes into the bomb itself.

Akio and A*HOSNY
thanks :D

Good eye - i was wondering if somebody would pick up on that mitake. ;)
When i got all the revised data the bombs looked fatter in that area than i had them - so when i remodeled them they ended up intersecting those clip things
well... like you said
none of this is even remotely visible in the final piece.
Which depicts Camels from the 148th aero squad on a bomb run
I finished it, and sent it to the magazine a couple of weeks ago.
along with profile/top/bottom views of all the pertinant AC.
I'd post it - But, I promised to keep it out of circulation until after the mag is published.
should be out in a month or so
