This is a WIP from a short I'm working on with two other people for school. We're trying to get sunlight to look right in our scene.
Need some feedback on how to get midday sun to look right.
right now I have 1 main fill light that casts my shadows and is acting as the sunlight. there are also two other spots that help give light to the house. the last is a dim directional to bring out highlights.
However, there seems to be something missing. If anyone could help me or give any feedback on this image it would be great. Any ideas on ways to approach lighting or any general cirts would be good also. thanks-phiyen nguyen-

Hey thats lookin realy good. I wouldn't have a clue about lighting but if your trying to mimic the mid-day sun then i would imagin u need a light casting shaddows from directly above the scene cause at the momemnt, the shaddows on things like the flamingo and chair and a few other things look like the suns comming from late afternoon or something. Anyways, its lookin good and maybe think about gettin rid of the black bg.... maybe some hills or sky or something.
keep it up.

thanks for the post. yeh we are definitely going to get rid of the black background. the black is going to be alpha and hopefully we'll be able to put in a matte painting behind there.
we're working in maya so unfortunately we don't have what the sunlight system 3ds max has to offer. that is a good point on the shadows though. i'll take that into consideration and hopefully post up another render...
thanks again for the feedback.

been working on it a bit. let me know what you think about the new render. still need to add some more grass in the background and the water. the blue sky is a temp for a matte painting still needed to be produced.
any ideas on how to improve on the sunlighting? thanks.

looks good, but I think it could be improved by using a higher res ground texture

I would give some more highlights to the scene, especially the chair at the front looks strange to me.
the pool should reflect an environment, right now it looks like a greenish-grey plane.
last but not least: try to get rid of the "cut" between the BG and the ground, maybe put a wall or a hedge
otherwise, some good work, keep it up! :)

that's a good point on the ground texture. i think right now i have it at 2048x2048. i probably should go ahead and increase it some.
yeah, definitely gotta get rid of the horizon line. the sky is a temp for a matte painting that will hopefully be seamless. the water is also a temp so i should be getting a better one in soon.
thanks for the feedback. i'll post another render up when i get a chance.

Try and place floating dead leaves on the water just to make the scene more dirty hehehe well it's all up to you though. But you're doing a really nice worn out look to the scene already. Well done.

It looks well modeled but could be improved on the texture and as you say lighting side...try and add a yellow highlight using another light, in the scene...i think this is the major problem..sunlight usual shows many colours at once, but in this dhot it seems like there is only one. well, hope this helps :)...it will aslo a warm glow to your scene and hopefully improve it, good luck !
An idea for the light:
For the sun, use a directional light with shadows and a yellow tint. For the bounced light, make a group of directional lights without shadows and with low intensity. Rotate each of these lights in different directions. Tint the ones which represent light coming from the sky blue, and the lights which represent bounced light from the ground green.
You could also add some bump maps to the textures and give some environment for the water to reflect.
It's a nice looking scene and I'm looking forward to seeing it develop. :)
yup... adding some nice shadows and some decent lights would really punch out the hell from this beautiful peace of art!!!
the grass work is simply amazing... did you use any plugins for that?
its amazing man... texturing alone rocks! :D
keep it up man! waiting for more! :)
ps. as SueL already said.... fake GI, use dome of lights! either shadow maped or none.... and the direct light: try area shadows! :)
