View Full Version : Cold chill moments, what songs touch you?
Goig!

I´m listening to a selection of the best songs of Dire Straits, themes like Tunnel of Love (specially the final) and Local Hero (a live version, I get goosebumps everytime) I can actually feel them on my skin.
What songs give you the chills?
I´ll add some from the top of my head:
Your Latest Trick, Dire Straits too.
Prospero´s Speech from the album The Mask and Mirror by Loreena Makennitt (actually the whole album is one long steady cold chill moment for me, but that last song really makes me shiver, perhaps because The Tempest is one of my favourite Shakespeare´s plays)
Nessum Dorma, from the opera Turandot, specially if it´s performed by Pavarotti.
Another from an opera, The Flower Duet from Lakme
With or Without You, U2
Russians, by Sting
May It Be, Enya
The Boxer Simon & Garfunkel
Mediterraneo, by Joan Manuel Serrat
Here, There and Everywhere, The Beatles
When the Snow Melts by Phil Cunningham, if you know it rise you hand; it took me 6 years to find out this song after hearing a snipet in a commercial.
Vincent by Don McLean, this gomdamned song almost makes me cry.
Your turn.

Nessum Dorma
Nice.. After I heard that song in the movie The Sum of All Fears, I immediately went out and got the soundtrack to hear it again. Definitely one of my favorite opera pieces.
The Cranberries - Zombie
Enya - May it Be (specifically the major chord change in the middle of the song)
MLK Jr - I Have a Dream.. speech.
Craig Armstrong - B.O.F 1942
Among others.. :)

Bruce Springsteen: Streets of Philadelphia. (Don't have to be homosexual to be touched by that one).
Bryan Adams: Inside Out.
Pur: Abenteuerland.
The Theme from Rainman
Watershed: Indigo Girl
Oh, and two of my alltime favourites:
Chris Isaac: Wicked Game.
and
Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World.

Coolio - Gangsters Paradise
REM - Everybody Hurts
The Verve - The drugs dont work
Carly Simon - Let the river run
Songs that give me the chills:
Windir - Martyrium
This one is "ripped" from a psalm. Its about some guy who died in a battle a long time ago and is off to the land of eternal rest.
The vocalist of the band died a couple of months ago which kinda gives the theme of the song an added affect. It's raw, brutal, epic and fast as hell. Brilliant song. |,,|
Dimmu Borgir - Allehelgens Død I Helveds Rike
This one got a nice part with clean vocals that contrast to the brutal music. It also got some nice synth parts.
Månegarm - Ursjälens Visdom
I love violins in metal songs. This one got lots of em, including a cool solo. Chill chill chill.
I got lots more but am too lazy to type em in:halo:
Well I really love:
Damien Rice - Volcano
Damien Rice - Cold Water
Thomas Dybdahl - Cecilia
Thomas Dybdahl - From Grace
Pink floyd - Comfertably Numb (Or how you spell it)
Delillos - Vår
Radiohead - ALL OF THEM! :)
Theese songs are really chilling and you should get them!

Ohh and of course The darkness, Bob dyllan, Pharell, Snoop ++

Chris: I expected a lot from these forums, but a Pur listener is really wicked :o
Really Chillout moments:
U2 - With or Without you
Pur - Lena
Status Quo - In the Army now
Queen - The show must go on
Uriah Heep - Lady in Black
there are plenty lots of other songs, but one is still really worth to be mentioned, and I wonder I didn't see it earlier in here :P
Scorpions - Wind of change
mr_demon
29-04-2005, 04:10 AM
i saw scorpions live last year, an i tell u, winds of change takes on a whole new dimension when heard live. i actually saw people crying!
well my most Cold chill experience was when I went to see Phantom of the Opera live, The songs in that left me covered in goosebumps and chilled to the bone... But haven't listened to it but that one time. I heard that the CDs of it are just as good. If any one wants to know what I'm talking about, give em a listen.
But I'm one of the only people I have ever met that doesn't really "get in to music" I think that I'm a completely visual person.. When I had the time to 3d Model I would mostly do it in compete silence, how strange... I think that I am completely Visually stimulated, audio does nothing for me, and yet I was born with huge ears and have good hearing :)

the first moment when i heard Timelessness by Fear Factory, i was profoundly stirred, its just... i cant describe the feeling that it gives to me...
also, one of more emotional songs i heard and liked, were Mutter and Spieluhr by Rammstein...
infact, im going to listen to it again right now.
Mutter
Ich durfte keine Nippel lecken
und keine Falte zum Verstecken
niemand gab mir einen Namen
gezeugt in Hast und ohne Samen
der Mutter die mich nie geboren
hab ich heute Nacht geschworen
ich werd ihr eine Krankheit schenken
und sie danach im Fluss versenken
Mutter
In ihren Lungen wohnt ein Aal
auf meiner Stirn ein Muttermal
entferne es mit Messers Kuss
auch wenn ich daran sterben muss
Mutter
In ihren Lungen wohnt ein Aal
auf meiner Stirn ein Muttermal
entferne es mit Messers Kuss
auch wenn ich verbluten muss
Mutter
oh gib mir Kraft
the best song ever.

the problem with Rammstein is that when you translate the song the lyrics are somewhat strange but then so does Weila Walia by the Dubliners and Dragosta din tie by O-zone.
some extra songs to my list:
the beginging of the Requim for Evita (the best use of an electrical guitar yet heard)
Wut will nicht Sterben - Rammstein with Puhdys (http://herzeleid.com/en/lyrics/misc#wut_will_nicht_sterben)
Reisse Reisse - Ramstein
Bless the child - Nightwish
Dead to the world - Nightwish (really great duet)
Almost al songs by Nick Cave (he has some very weird songs)

Enya - Pax Deorum, May It Be, Athair Ar Nearmh
Hammerfall - Always Will Be, I Believe
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Queen - The Show Must Go On, Who Wants to Live Forever,
Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow
Rammstein - Mutter
The composer Ravel
Autumn Leaves
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Kenny G - Pastel
Nightwish - Forever Yours
Mike Oldfield - Sentinel, quite a few other songs I can't remember the names of
(I forget the artist) - Adiemus

das modell is a makeover of an old kraftwerk song. i like listening to rammstein, not playing their songs cause their a bit too one-or-two-chords-throughout-the-song type of stuff, know what i mean?
pecenipicek
03-05-2005, 06:32 PM
tell me about it...
altough Feuer Frei is a bit more eh... randomized in the three-four chords stuff. ;)
im trying to learn how to play a guitar, but my acoustic one broke. totally...
and it predates my parents...(i think it was made some time before 1918... aka WWI :) )

03-05-2005, 07:32 PM
Let's see:
Hard:
Alice in Chains - Them Bones (written in 7/8 rhytm, cool!)
Temple of the Dog (Soundgarden + Pearl Jam) - Call me a dog
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
Bush - Machinehead + Glycerine
Skunk Anansi - Brazen
Rammstein - (Hier kommt die) Sonne
Soft:
Heather Nova - Island
Sting - Fragile
Ben Folds Five - Evaporated
Evanesence - Hello
Spandau Ballet - Through the Barricades
Kansas - Dust in the Wind
Classical:
F. Smetana - die Moldau
von Beethoven - Mondscheinsonate
Chopin - Nocturne no. 9
And many many many more... I like almost every music style, as long as the music 'has' something that catches me.
Most recent 'shiver-moment' I had while listening to the song by Evanescence, Hello. The lyrics are really overwhelming, and the singer has such an amazing voice, she can hit high notes with almost no vibrato, clear as ice! Wow...

playing rammstein on an acoustic? hm.......................
y don't u buy a cheap electric? just a samick, or yamaha. i've had my samick for 3 years now an it's really value for money. i haven't experienced a need to tune it in the past 4 weeks!!! an boy do i give it a thrashing when i play (anything between one an four hours almost daily). ok, it isn't a gibson, but still it's good enough for beginners. saving up for a les paul or an explorer, hopefully this year

nah, my friend has an electric, so i practice a bit there, but i cant practice anymore on my old acoustic one...

the problem with Rammstein is that when you translate the song the lyrics are somewhat strange but then so does Weila Walia by the Dubliners and Dragosta din tie by O-zone.
I guess translating the texts can be quite hard, as they are partly done with using slangs, or other sentences that you can't truly translate, the lyrics of Rammstein do often have a heavy depth and so you have to think about them a lot..
Anyways you can usually expect that they are quite sad, Mutter and Spieluhr are some of the best examples for this...
Also "Amerika" is a very interesting song..
If you are looking for texts and translations, take a look at lyrics.astraweb.com (http://www.lyrics.astraweb.com/) , I at least found a translation of "Engel" there, quite good, maybe you find even more ;)

When I was 16 it was MARILYN MANSON - The Beautiful People
When I was 18 it was Smashing Pumpkins - Muzzle
Now that I'm 24 it's Loreena McKennitt's rendition of - The Lady of Shallott
Strange How my musical tastes have grown, It's kinda interesting how you can be so in love with a song when you were younger, but when you get older the song makes so much more sense and you realize that you really did'nt get it, or maybe it just takes on a different meaning from a different perspective
I heard this song Bonny Portmore by Loreena Mckennitt, a few years ago, something about it just made me want to cry, it was so sad, but beautiful at the same time, and then I did a little research on it and found out how old it was, and what it was about, and it really amazed me, it inspires me, it's a crazy thought that you could create something and hundreds of years later it could have such an emotional impact on someone so many years later, i think thats the one of the true powers of art, its the closest you could really get to immortality
Wow and I can't even begin to tell you how big of an impact the lady of shallot had on me
you should read the Tennyson poem, it's amazing, probably for me more than most, for some reason I can really relate to some of the ideas behind that poem
