Do the benefits of drinking beer outweigh the disadvantage?
Discuss :D
What I can think of (whilst downing another can)
Pros
A tool for better socialising
Helps you relax and forget about worries/stress
Gets you through watching the artsy film your girlfriend forces you to watch
A cure for insomnia
If you are T-total people think you are weird
Cons
Cost to your pocket
Cost to your health
Chance of committing criminal acts whilst out of your head
If you drink too much people think you are an idiot
So, has anyone got any stories to tell to convince us that beer is either a good or bad thing for the world?

Con -
alcoholism, alcoholic, 12 step programs and getting in touch with a "higher power," Lung cancer (how many of those guys aren't newly formed chain smokes, didn't you know tobacco companies sponsor AA), wrapping you car around a tree/telephone poll after you fall off the wagon . . . I could go on but I won't.
benifs -
Amusement at others stupidity when drink, increase in spending money by acting as a Taxi to drunk freinds and stopping at every gas station on the way to their homes maybe even taking longer routes just to hit a couple of extra stations for the fun of it, (after the cons all you can do is drink club soda and be the designated driver anyway, might as well enjoy it.)

cons - alcoholism can cause domestic abuse, rape, murder. it can destroy families. it can basically destroy the lives of the people who become alcoholic as well as the people around them.
unfortunately I have a sad story about my uncle (may he rest in peace). he became an alcoholic at the end of the 80s after he lost his job. He got to the stage where he trashed his house and beat my aunt (soon after my aunt and cousin moved to live with us). He stayed an alcoholic for the rest of his life, and found a girlfriend who was also an alcoholic. During this time my parents had almost nothing to do with him, and would send him home whenever he made a surprise visit to see us (he would usually ask my dad to pick him up from the local bar tho).
At my gran's funeral he was sporting a pair of crutches and a broken leg. He told my dad he'd fallen off his bike. We later found out that his girlfriends alcoholic brother had hospitalised him.
Eventually he broke up with his girlfriend. However, her new boyfriend beat her, and she decided to tell her brother it was my uncle that did it. So her brother went round to my uncles, and stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver for something he didnt do. :(
At his funeral, one of his friends told my dad that all he wanted was to be able to come and visit us all like he used to before he became an alcoholic.
Ross sorry to hear about your uncle. People always seem to defend alcohol by saying alittle can't hurt, and those who become alcoholics have no self controll, but really that isn't true at all. Those of us who choose not to drink have our reasons, though. The stories my be a bit different the main themes seem universal and it is only the details that differ.

i'm a water drinker. :D
means i never drink alcohol...i simply hate it! :ufo:
dhin: You can also get addicted to food, does that mean we should illegalize it? Did you see that 230 lbs 5 year old girl on Jerry Springer?
There's a BIG difference between partyin every once in a while or drinking a glass or two of wine to the food and being an alcoholic.
Pros-
-Taste. I love certain types of beer, Lapin Kulta is my favorite.
-You socialize easier.
-You get more open and honest.
-You get happier.
-The fuzzy feeling is funny.
Cons-
-Hangover. I only get this when I drink harder stuff though, which I usually refrain from.
-More open and honest can be a disadvantage.
-You do stupid stuff like burning your ass with cigarettes *cough*
-Sometimes you fall down and hurt your head:hurt:
-Price:grr: (especially Norwegian prices)
I don't condem drinking or say make the stuff illegal (though the prices in Norway do make you wonder. . . not that it is really stopping anyone or even slows them down.) And I wouldn't go on about the good drinking habits of Norwegians because this is the only place I've seen the parents get as sloshed as their teens and act as stupid. . . but I digress.
I simply ment I have reasons, as I am sure other do also, for not drinking, and alcoholism is very different than a food addiction. Compairing the two is like trying to compair driving verse heavey metal, they are too different . . . they aren't even the same thing.
I didnt compare drinking to food addiction, i just made a point out of the fact that everything can mess you up if you do over-do it.
Too much drinking leads to alcoholism, and too much eating leads to 350 pounds. Which is bad.:ugh:

Ok, Knut...we HAVE to hear this one...
Knut - trust me you can become any alcoholic after ONE drink. Unlike eating where it is dependant on prolonged abuse.
Oh and ya tell the story of why your arse met you ciggy.

Lets just say two weeks ago I decided to stump one on each cheek and on saturday I added another one. I now have 3 small red spots on my ass:o
<-- stupid
Dhin: I've never heard of this =|
Alcoholism is usually a result of a depression of some sort and way too much drinking. I'm sure youre aware of the biological concequences of overconsuming alcohol (the kidney and all that).
If youre diagnosed an alcoholic after one drink theres obviously something wrong with either your alcohol handling organs or your psyche. =/

it depend on the situation on whether drinking beer is a good thing or not. It's relative.

I think the one thing some of us are missing is that beer, like wine, is also a food stuff. Yeah, anything taken to extremes is a really bad thing, and all of us who drink are most likely guilty of some ridiculous act caused by alcohol. I think that part of growing up is making those stupid mistakes, and hopefully no lasting damage is done. But, binge drinking aside I have to say beer is a good thing.
In the last few years I've taken to drinking beer as a hobby. Finding and tasting all the different types out there and combining them with the different seasons and meals is a great and fun thing to do. Me and my girlfriend realy enjoy it, the way we do with wine to a lesser extent - somehow we gravitated towards beer instead of wine. Possibly because it's appears to be less pretentious than wine.

Oh, you'll taste beer. It's too good not to taste...
I've heard that you can become an alcoholic after just one beer or something. Some people are more prone to addiction than others. There's also something I heard that said that alcoholics have a physical need for alcohol. That is, they've drank so much that their body has developed a dependency. That's why a lot of alcoholics drink as soon as they get up in the morning.
I dunno if it's true, but I heard that...
I like to drink occasionally. My parents let me drink beer and wine from time to time. I've had tequila and all that, but I don't like it much on its own. I like to mix it with like egg nog or something.
I binge drank beer once, and i'll never do it again. After 4 beers everything tastes the same and you don't enjoy the taste of the beer any more. I just like the taste, and sometimes the nice light-headedness after you drink on an empty stomach :p

BLASPHEMY!!!! ;)
Pros:
You get plastered.
Your missus becomes almost bearable.
Your missus becomes almost attractive.
You're not scared of heights or police anymore.
Your car suddenly turns into an F1 racecar.
Con:
You wakeup in places unknown, later discovering that you were:
and I quote:
"Removed from the premises due to unruly and antisocial behaviour. For being offensive to the publican, and making obscene gestures to his wife.
Did you realise Mr. Wall, that exposing yourself in public is considered an offense???
Do you have anyone who can come and pick you up???"
I can't think of any pros for beer. Only con I can think of atm, is pullin' a bird who you wouldn't normally go for. I know someone who got plastured, & woke up in bed with a 1 legged woman.
I don't like the taste of Alcohol, I wine, or vodka sometimes, but I hate the taste of beers. Thoe one alcolohic drink I'd like to try is Mead (honey wine I believe). I read somewhere that the hangovers could last for 2 days... but don't know how true that is.
Ohwell, my 2 pennies.

I'm allergic to yeast, moreever, my body seems to feel this and is disgusted by products with yeast (all except pizza),
so I think beer is bad for the world.
A while ago there was some guy though, who had a beerbelly, and an accident with a chainsaw, this way he had an instant tummytuck, otherwise he'd be dead.
