I havn't posted in a while as I've been animating my thesis project. Once that is done I'll be working on finishing the texture of tony the drunk. In the intern I've been working on this model when I need a break from animating.
In any case. Here are the sketches done by a friend, and the start of the head.

Great start ColeKindred:cool: . Nice drawing too.

a little early for any comment... keep tweaking...
looks liek a good start, ill be checking back on this one a bit, i think gargoyles are awesome :) Keep modelling!
Wondering if I'll see see someone finish his gargoyle at last.
The concept is cool, the start looks promising. Just keep updating and show us a finished garg in a few weeks (or months)

It's my impression that the lower jaw extends too far, but it's pretty hard to tell w/o the teeth. Anyway, good work ;)

can you post a low wire?
maybe it's the jpg compression, but it seems like the wire is all messed up. show the wires and prove me wrong ;)
looks like it's time to start the teeth and tongue and to give details to the inside of the mouth.

They are smoothing errors. Needs to be fixed before you continue ColeKindred. It can be hell to fix when you add more detailed to your Gargoyle.

Ya I havn't cleaned the mesh up yet, thiers still a bunch of 3 and 5 sided polys. Im currently cleaning it up though. What do you guys think of the form
the form looks cool, but it will depend a lot on the body you'll give him. if it fits together, it will look really cool.

The Form looks quite good. Its hard to tell without the teeth but in my opinion the inside of the lower jaw needs to be pulled in a bit.
What are you going to do about the eyes.

thx for the feedback.
DragonFlame I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the eyes yet I may make them lizard like.
I'm really buisy right know and this is a side project to clear my head so the updates may come a little slow, but they will come. Thx for the feedback I'll post an update when I can.

I need some help choosing with the teeth. I can't deside what to make them like. Here is a comparison of 3 diffrent sets of teeth. The teeth are all VERY RUFF. They don't have detail yet and I havn't made them look connected to the head. I want to deside on the style of teeth before I put too much time into it. If everyone could vote for either a, b, or c, It would help a bunch.
Also I'm not entirely happy with my teeth designs so If anyone has any suggestions on how to make them better let me know.
Once I choose the teeth I'll be cleaning up the mesh and then adding more detail. Thx for the help in advance. :)

LOL well it's going to be either B or C. Its finals right now so I havn't had time to work on it. After finals I'm going to make the body and then go with either B or C depending on which one fits best. Thx a bunch for the feedback, and helping me to eliminate A and D. :)

I havn't posted in a while so I just wanted to put an update up.
I'm putting the head on hold untill I have the body worked out as it will help me pick the teath.
I havn't put any real detail into the body yet and the mussle defenition is really rough, but hopefully the general form will come across.
Also I realise that the base pose I'm modeling the gargoyle in isn't standard, but the gargoyle has a range of motion that is very diffrent from a humens which is why I choose to model in this base pose.
Tell me what you think. :)

Well call me crazy but I like A :p It's the most like that 2nd concept pic u posted, which I thought looked pretty cool. Anywho, I think the neck is too wide right now (in the profile pic, the neck is as thick as the head+gaping mouth), and I still think the mouth is open too wide :p

Hay it's been a long time I know. I've been working on my thesis and I aquired an internship so I havn't had much time to work on this side project. In anycase here is a small update. I boxed out the wings and Modeled some mussles on the back. I still have to connect the wings to the back and build the mussle structures around the wings, also the lower spine is currently none existent. Thx :)

Thx alot. I'm currently working on the wings and then I'm going to finish adding detail to the head, bigger muscles around the wings on the back and maybee some more detail to the feet. Then It's ZBRUSH time (never used it before really excited to see what kind of detail I can get out of this model) :)

I don't think you need lines on the chest... skin would take care of that. I think he'd look good with some lips though.
ColeKindred
02-09-2004, 10:48 PM
PhantomOokami:
I agree I probably shouldn't have modeled the lines on his chest. I choose too because I had modeled the lines on the neck and thought I should keep consistent as textured lines on the chest may not look the same as the modeled ones on the neck. Luckly I am almost satisfied with the base mesh and other then some head and forarm fixes the rest of the detail will be added with displacement in zbrush so it wont be much heavier. :)
I have already tried to add lips and was unhappy with the result though I plan on trying again. It would be nice to have lips to animate snears and such :)
Thanks for the feedback.
Everyone Keep it coming.

very awesome modelling! and model aswell! I don't see this kind of character more detailed... do only the texture and its great for animation. in my opinion of course
hm.. I would also sugest to tweak that part where the thighs meets the abs
good luck! and good job so far :D

Diego : Thanks. Your right I'll work on where the thighs meets the abs.
T0XIC: Thanks.
SNap007be: Though it wasn't in the origional design I have been considering adding a tail and will probably be adding one. I think it will help the creature keep it's balence as currently its so top heavy. Thanks for the feedback :)

The gumline is still thier but under the lip ;)
I figure when I animate it I can lift the lip in a snear when I want to show off the gums which will be alot :D

Worked on the inside of the mouth and some random mesh tweaks I think I'm done with the modeling. So If you have any comments or suggestions now is the time. Else I'm connecting the halves and then bringing it into Zbrush for the textureing and displacement.

Been a while. havn't had much time.
I worked on the head. Changed the form and added detail in zbrush
I posted the strait zbrush render and the render in 3dstudio. I havn't been able to get the quality I want in 3ds yet. :( I think it's due to the fact that I can't subdivide more then 4 times in 3ds without the render running out of mem. (In Zbrush I can subd 5 times.) I only have 1 gig of ram.
If anyone knows of any tricks about working with displacement in 3dstudio let me know. (I can't afford vray :( )
Well here it is.

First of all, I love the zbrush details. Makes him look stoney (as a gargouille should). The not so good news its that, if you are going with this look, you'll have to make it over the entire body, whitch will be damn hard.
Suggestion for 3ds and displacement: first create a diffuse map (you know, colors, details wrinkles and such). Then take the diffuse map and desaturate it, play around brightness contrast just a bit and name this bump map. Take the bump map, lighten it a bit more, decide what parts would you like to displace and with the multiply tool in photoshop add some darkness and, maybe some detail.
In 3ds texture can do what mesh definition cannot without eating through your computer like a crazed gibberling. My advice is to create your details through texturing and not through modeling. You have to create the illusion, not the actual thing.
Think about that.
ColeKindred
03-11-2004, 06:58 PM
Ya I still have to do the body. Havn't started it yet. I was thinking about taking the scales out of the displacement map and putting them in the bump. I'm in denial though cuz it's a pain in the but.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get started :)
ColeKindred
05-12-2004, 10:20 PM
I decided to scratch the zbrush detail and start over. I liked em but as avatar said Much of the detail should be in the bump. (plus I think I can make em better)
Also I hated the structure of the head. SOoooo I reworked the form to make it more defined and evil looking. spent alot of time on the front view of the head. Tell me what you think :). Once I'm happy with the new form I'll go back to zbrush. Thx. :)
