Hey everybody... It's been a long time since my last post here at CGChannel's forum. Well to the project:

My idea is to create a man, hard working man, who is very bored by his destiny working hard and til late night every single day. For the final composition and mood I found the inspiration at one of the coolest artists in the world Yanick Dusseault (http://www.dusso.com).

I started this project recently, but I've already got everything planned forward. I think to describe the mood and the feelings, one of the key things are the eyes which I payed a lot of attention to. Also the whole apperance of the man and his facial expression are important as well.

Ok, enough of the boring stuff, here are some of my w.i.p. pics...

The begining:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render01.jpg

The "clay" render:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render02.jpg

A simple diffuse test :: front:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render04.jpg

A simple diffuse test :: side:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render06.jpg

The mesh:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render07.jpg

Finished textures and a simple pose:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render08.jpg

A safety helmet :: begining:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render09.jpg

I haven't finished the skin shader yet... the hair, eye brows and mustage will be done lastly with shag-hair/fur (hopefully). The eyes are completely rigged and fully animatable :)

Well I hope you'll give me more feedback than I got at CGTalk.com :(

Thakns & cheers :D

Thats looking really good man.

What form of modeling do you use.

My only crit is that to make the brim of the hard hat alittle thicker. But then again I could be wrong, never really seen a hard hat close up. LOL.

Thx for posting the wire as well. Always good to see how people model there faces.

:p Lovely modeling and texturing Cyrenn. I may be wrong but may be his ear looks little flat. Looking forwad for updates.

loocas

To Cyrenn: Thank you buddy... but the helmet has no thickness yet :) I added that after this post... I have some more wips but I'll post the helmet after it's finished oks? ;) Btw: my modeling technique is nothing special... I start from a face (PLANE in max) and then covert it to POLY and start extruding the edges to the desired look I need. After a very rough volume is done I start subdividing the polygons more to get the fine details I want. That's all - as it's shown on the wire renders... :)

To saby: Thanks man! ;)

To saby: No worries man ;)

To geoMan: :D LOL

To FCR: thank you very much ;)

To coolguy123: thank you, hope I won't dissapoint you

So here's yet another update from me:

I finished the main part of the safety helmet... the material of the helmet is temporary - will be working on that today. The helmet isn't complete, I'll have to model the strappings on the head. I'm also gonna add some labels and stickers on the helmet etc... to make it look more real ;-)

Looks great :) Really nice textures in the helmet..

I just have two small critics: the specular in the face looks strange (looks like it's made of plastic. Does it has a bump map?) and the ear seems flat.

Hi guys... firstly I wanna thank you all for the comments/crits...

To geoMan: I will show the texture maps later on when finished... thou it's still a wip I still have to tweak the textures a bit...

To FCR: it's caused by the bad lighting in the scene... these are just test renders ;)

To d03boy: I know... I'm a non smoker, so I have to ABUSE one to give me a cigarette... then it will look better ;)

To saby: The shader is very simple yet (I plan to use sub-surface scattering later on...), it has DIFFUSE/BUMP/SPECULAR COLOR and SPECULAR LEVEL maps only (using finalRender stage-1 sp2) with two layers of specular reflections to give it the swet look... The diffuse was made from several photos of a face I used as a reference and then a bit of stamp/brush/burn/dodge etc... in Photoshop :)

To Vitor: Ears were flat in real ;) and the shader is still a wip...

To smoothD: I'll roughen it more a bit later on... and the texture is 2048x2048 ;)

To asfalton: The cigarette is a crap at the moment :D

Thanks again guys and stay tuned for more... ;)

Well... I've got a little update here... I don't have much time for this project, 'coz it's a personal project and I simply can't spend hours on it every day, even when I'd love to... :(

Anyways... here's a little update - well a little... I've redrawn all the textures (diffuse, bump and specular) + I've spent some time on the skin shader, thou it's not 100% done, I think I'm getting closer :D And I've spent some time tweaking the Shag&Hair/Fur (which I HATE, 'coz of it's lack of controls over the entire volume of hair etc... :grr:

Here it is:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render18.jpg

Ok... so, once again... I'd really appreciate some comments etc... especially related to the hair + mustache (note that this is just a TEST RENDER, I'm NOT satisfied w/ the result!)

Cheers...

Hey guys... no reply at all? Come on ppl! Write something! I command you! :D ;)

Phynius Gauge
20-04-2004, 11:35 PM
Its good, but it could use some work. I think that the helmet would be much dirtier than that, considering the conditions that construction workers face, but I may be wrong. Anyways I may be wrong with this one as well but the shape of that helmet doesn't seem right to me :dunno: . Your character model looks really chill, but the texture could be improved on. I like that you created 3d facial hair for him, but he needs a texture for the facial hair and/or way more of it :) . He kind of has a baby face too, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, just my opinion. Maybe you could make the face just a little more masculine :D .

Stuh505
21-04-2004, 03:18 AM
I think the texture needs a loot of work. it does not look like a masculine workers face. change the tone, add creases, wrinkles, imperfections...there is a good tutorial showing that stuff on this website I noticed. also his lips stand out a bit, not exactly sure why. but most noticeably the stubble is too dark and too spread out. the hair is a bit too bright black as if he dyed (sp?) it, and a bit too frizzy...I don't know if you can control the frizziness though.

loocas
21-04-2004, 06:16 PM
First of all I want to thank you guys for the time you spent on the crits :)

To Phynius Gauge: You're not the only one who suggested to dirty up the helmet and as I said somewhere else, I'll do that :) But as to the shape... I think it's irrelevant, because there's TONES of different kinds of helmets and I just took one of them and added some mods just a little bit. The texture is gong to have some more tweaks... The hair are TOTALLY WIP, I'm not satisfied at all with the way it looks! ;) And the worker is a young man, who has to work on a site which he HATES, so that explains his looks ;)

To Stuh505: Well I appreciate your comments/crits but I'm satisfied with the way the mesh looks, I really wanted to capture a young worker for the sake of the mood of the picture and ofcourse, I went through such situtation in my life... ;) But I agree with you as to the wrinkles, dirty pores, imperfections etc... as soon as I get the LONG AWAITED texture CD I add some of these IMMEDIATELY! ;) The lips, as to the geometry, are fine to me, but I'll tweak the texture a bit later on too. And the hair... yeah, I know... this is actually the first time I'm using Shag&Hair and I really HATE this plug-in :D Ofcourse I can control the frizziness, but the tweaking the hair takes TOO long than I would like to, so I leave the hair & mustache & eye brows at the end of the process, when I have got everything done, so I'll have just to tweak and tweak and tweak... ;)

Thanks again and hope you'll stay tuned and keep posting crits&comments :)

All right... I have three quick tests of the head for you to crit at the moment...

I made a minor changes to the textures of the head and to the hard hat as well... I made the skin tone a bit ruddier and dirtier as well as I made the hard hat to look a bit dirtier too. Now, all the test renders use a 3S shadin, so the skin appears a bit brighter.

Here's the first one...
Rendered w/ a simple gradient background and a simple skylight...
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/lighting_test1.jpg

The second one is rendered w/ the same skylight settings, but without any background.
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/lighting_test2.jpg

And the third one is rendered w/ HDRi background for the sake of a bit complex lighting situtation.
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/lighting_test3.jpg

Allright... although I'm not very satisfied with these test renders I'm showing them to you to add some more comments/crits. Remember, I'll be working very hard on the final tweaks at the end, so take in consideration that EVERYTHING you see or have seen is TEMPORARY and can be more or less easily modified/changed - so please, I BEG you for some time spent on commenting my work, it's very important to me, 'coz I wanna get this to TOP galleries over the net as well as to the frontpage on CGTalk.com :)

And the very last thing... I'm pretty much done w/ the head as well as w/ the hard hat, next week, I'm gonna present some progress (finally), so please be patient with me... 'coz as I said - I'm working on this on my spare time, which is extremely precious to me and which I, unfortunately, haven't got much :(

Thanks and C'Ya soon...

No replies at all? Why do I bother... :grr:

All right, I have some new models:

The T-Shirt model:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render19.jpg

The T-Shirt quick render:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render20.jpg

The torso:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render21.jpg

Well, at the moment I've got the T-Shirt textured and I'm modeling another Shirt on top of the T-Shirt, which I think could look cool ) After this I have to model arms/gloves/belt etc... so I have a lot work to do ahead ;)

I have to say another thing - the drapery on the T-Shirt as well as on the Shirt is NOT final! I'll run the models through a heavy dynamics simulation after everything is finished and when I will be working on the final pose for the character! So don't crit the drapery please ;)

Hey Saby: :) Thanks very much!

Well... yet another update... ;)

I've fixed some errors I got on the T-Shirt mesh, so it's nice and clean now - ready for the dynamics simulation ;-)

The T-Shirt :: fixed:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render23.jpg

And I've started working on the second shirt, which will lay over the T-Shirt (I just thought it could have looked kinda cool?) - which is still not finished yet. What you think anyway?

The second Shirt:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render24.jpg

Well... Soon, I'll have both shirts textured and 100% ready to go through the simulation... but before that, I'll have to model the arms and the gloves etc... as I mentioned earlier... ;)

Oks, so here's another progress... this time I spent a lot of time tweaking the shaders and textures a bit on the head...

The head without the hard hat:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render29.jpg

The head w/ the hard hat:
http://duber.flammable.cz/ie_wip/test_render30.jpg

Don't worry about the lashes and eyes... I was just testing the skin shaders. In my opinion, it's fine, but it needs some color corrections, which I'll be doing at the very end...

Yeah, and my girlfriend suggested me to redo the shirt texture in terms of scaling the checker pattern down a bit, so I did... ;-) Hope you'll like it too guys and add some more comments... ;-)

Well... no replies so far? :( never mind... I've got an update anyway ;)

This time I compounded the Shirt w/ the guy and I modified the skin shader a bit, to make it look more real... Yeah, and I also created an 360' flyby around the model, so you can see the model from every angle... well, it's actually like 300', because at 5am in the morning I got pissed off by the fans in my comp, so I cancelled the rendering progress :D, but anyway... it's packed wit RAR 3.30 and the file size shouldn't be more than 4MB...

The tweaked skin shader:

the cigarette, the helmet and the shirt look great, but the face color doesnt do it for me, its too pink, try to reack a more orange tone. also it lacks of bump mapping (does it have any?) specially some wrinkles around the eyes. try to think in Marlboro guy.

The ear looks a little flat where it meets the head, i think you should mapped separated from the head and paint little veins and details in it too.. also the mastoid muscle (neck) looks weird too, too curvy.

keep it up

jeb
15-06-2004, 07:11 PM
here is a little paint over of what i mean.

-color
-stronger shin
-little wrinkles near the eyes(they should be more)

hope you dont mind

neiy0
17-06-2004, 09:30 AM
i think that paint over makes him look to girly.. also, his eyelashes dont look right, they look to perfect, and thick..

are you going to do some more hair? I really liked it with the hair and the stubble, it looked more real.

also the shirt looks to short, the white under shirt that is, if you put his body to it, i think it would look like a belly shirt..

the cigarette is still to short and skinny, fatten it up a bit

hope this helps, you've done a fantastic job so far, 5*'s from me:)

loocas
17-06-2004, 04:50 PM
Hey guys ;) thx for the crits!

well, the skin was just a test of the shader, if it works... and now, I've painted several layers of dirt over his face so, here it is:

first layer:
http://www.duber.cz/dump/ie_wip/test_render39.jpg

second layer:
http://www.duber.cz/dump/ie_wip/test_render40.jpg

and the final dirty texture:
http://www.duber.cz/dump/ie_wip/test_render41.jpg

To jeb: the cigarette will be a real challenge, 'coz I'm a non-smoker :D but the ears are that flat in real :( it's not my fault the God didn't give me better ones :p and I'll take another look at the neck and the wrinkles... and yes, bump mapping IS present ;)

To neiy0: hopefully fixed the girlish look and don't worry, at the end he'll definitely have the stubble and hair back, but because I render the hairs in separate scene, I don't want to spend so much time tweaking the hair just for the sake of test renders... I'll tweak the cigarette yet, so hopefully it'll be allright ;)

Thx a lot guys and C'Ya l8er ;)

hpslashluvr
17-06-2004, 08:23 PM
I think the girlie look is mostly due to the fact that he has pale eyes and dark lashes, so it looks like he's wearing mascara. Lots of guys have this actually. Maybe if you made the lips even more neutral colored, it would help.

Can you post a pic of your eye texture? I'd like to see it, I'm working on one too.

neiy0
18-06-2004, 03:18 AM
hey loocas, the grimy look looks nice.. one thing tho, the eyelashes look to thick, they look painted on and there is no area where you can see through them into the skin..

loocas
18-06-2004, 07:38 PM
To neiy0: thx man :) well, the eyelashes aren't done at all... so I'll definitely tweak them even more later on...

To hpslashluvr: hey m8 ;) yepp, the girlish looks will be probably caused by those issues... which I'll fix later as well... and as to the texture... it's not that important, more important is the geometry of the eye... I've got two modified spheres, first with the eye-white and iris/pupil and second is transparent, refractive/reflective... the texture was just a bit modified photo of my own eye :)

THX and C'Ya soon with some updates...

Nice hand. I can't tell so well from the angles you've posted, but the thumb looks out of proportion compared to the rest of the hand. Also, the eybrows in in one of your previous posts look way too thick for this guy IMO.

As I said somewhere else: I'M A FREAK :D everybody crits things on the face which are actually present on MY VERY own face :D same with the gloves... my thum really looks this weird :( well... I'll finish the texturing and then will post it, so it should add some depth to the model ;) The eyebrows are just a test, they're be radically different at the end from these ones... ;)

Btw: thx for the comments mate ;) stay tuned...

Don't trip dude :p . Everyone looks different, I was just basing my crit on the fact that most people don't have eyebrows that thick, unless they are of middle eastern origins, and that guy looks pretty white to me :) . But you do have a big thumb :p . Now that I look at those eyebrows again, I'd say that they don't blend in to the face so well, maybe you should work on the opacity map a little bit to fix this.

hey man, one thing i was looking at, and this is just a minor detail, the shadows reflecting on the skin, for instance with the earing on the skin, it looks to crisp.. my earing when light strikes it, is fuzzy against my skin..

just a quick observation, also the hands look kind of funny, the gloves rather, look to long, and slender for work gloves. especially for a worker. my work gloves, are generally shorter, and stockier, with not so crisp out lines.

the general anatomy of the gloves is nice, but the fingers are way to long..

glad to oblige..:)

are you in college?

loocas
22-06-2004, 05:02 PM
To Phynius Gauge: ;) no worries man... I know about these bugs, which I'll definitely change at the end! I promise ;)

To neiy0: Well, this is a very speculative subject, due to the fact that there is TONS of different gloves etc... I want the worker to be situated in a near future, so the gloves/cloths/hard hat etc... are a bit HYPE and I really work with heaps of reference images that I took pictures of or I downoloaded them... I don't want these objects to look too regular and "normal" but I definitely agree and see the imperfections regarding the eyebrows, some texture imperfections and even some anatomically incorrect proportions... which I'll fix, 'coz I think they're just minor, by the end... ;)

And, yes, I'm at a cllege, CGC (http://www.cgc.com.au) that is :)

hey, that looks like a nice college, are there any art colleges in australia..im still looking for good art schools, and it might be neat to move to australia for school

loocas

To neiy0: Well, I'm originally from the Czech Republic and I had moved to Sydney only because of this college... so I really don't know much about Sydney's artistic background... :( but this college in particular is pretty cool... You go through all aspects of CG and theory... I'm currently finishing the 2D traditional animation course and after this I'll finally move to the 3d animation courses... which I can't wait for ;)

To neiy0: OH no!! no, thanks god! Sorry, it might have sounded like that, but I HAVEN'T lost the whole project, in fact, I haven't lost anything, it was "just" the Mother Board which had burnt down like a matchstick house :grr: It'll take up to two weeks for the reseller to fix it, respectively to send it back to ASUS and ASUS back to the reseller... :( And after that, I'll have the whole body of the worker done! ;) So you may have something to look fwd to :)

Well... first of all, I have to say, that I'm very proud of myself  'coz I've made the textures in 2 hrs and I've hand-drawn it from scratch... but I let you judge :)

So, C'Ya soon, w/ another update... :)

neiy0
13-07-2004, 10:33 AM
when i saw your email thing in my inbox, i cried..

the gloves look good, they still look weird to me, sorta like retro gardening gloves.. but that's besides the point because we've already had this discussion..
the texture looks nice, but there seems to be something wrong under/between the ring finger, and the middle finger.. there is possibly a vertex that has gone astray? it looks as though there is a sharp point that is coming out of the hand if i am not mistaken?

other than that the texturing is done very nicely (how did you create the textures, photoshop?) and i look forward to more updates, as always.. especially when you have the whole thing put together;)

cheers, and i hope that your computer is not giving you anymore significant problems:)

loocas
13-07-2004, 11:55 AM
Heeey... neiy0... how are you? It's been pretty long, hasn't it... :) And don't worry... now, the computer works absolutely perfectly! :D

As to the textures/model, the model is fine, it's closed, so the vertex isn't the problem... what you've pointed out is a coordinates problem, because when I unwrapped the mesh I had to detach all the fingers... so... it'll be fixed today ;)

The model is alright, in my opinion, and it's the way I want it to be... but... you know... we all have a different taste when it comes to modeling a volume :) which is good, ofcourse.

The last thing... yes... I work with Photoshop and Photoshop only when it comes to textures... and as I wrote before, 90% of all the textures are hand-drawn, with a mouse :grr: ;)

Thanks a lot and C'Ya soon, w/ some more updates :D

Haven't seen this thread in awhile. Too bad your motherboard burnt out, but at least it wasn't your hard drive :) . I would feel handicapped without my PC for more than a couple weeks... Anyways your gloves look pretty tight with those nice textures. I'll be checking back here soon :) .

To Phynius Gauge: Yeah... tell me about that... I thought I'd die without my beloved one! :D And thx for the comments on my works ;) and the gloves are probably tight? I don't know myself, but I wanted to paint such textures on them since the begining... hence the final scene will be from not far future... :)

I have to complain a bit more... I just have to get it out of me: First... I bought these components to update my old P3 1GHz, 256MB Ram and GeForce 2... So I bought P4 2.8GHz HT Prescott with 1MB L2 Cache, 512 MB 3200 DDR Ram, GeForce 4 TI 128MB DDR... BUT then after a month or so... My NORTH BRIDGE chipset (the one, that has to manage all the I/O devices = IDE, USB, COMs...), so I went after the reseller and put it into warranty (hope you understand this sentence, because I don't know the right words for it... :o ), so they told me to wait for two weeks, at least, after the two weeks I brought it home, but the MB didn't seem NEW, it didn't smell new (believe me, it's important to smell it!) and it certainly didn't behave as new... :grr: so, finally today... all my HDDs and CD-Roms stopped working..., I checked everything and on a different system, my HDDs and CD-Roms work perfectly... well... once again... :grr: Sorry for this, but I feel a bit better when complaining to some one... :(

To neiy0: Ooooh man, you should have seen the "poor" girl at the counter... :) she was new, so she had no idea what I was doing there such angry/mad whatsoever... so I just said what I had in my mind... she listened, silently openned a shlef, picked up a whole new MB and gave it to me without a word... so I finally have my comp back as it was when I bought it and am very happy workin on it now on :) So expect some updates on monday/tuesday (I also have to work on some commercial stuff), I have to finish the arms, which will remind you a bit of Ronnie Coleman, if you know him ;) and then probably trousers... that'd be it for the guy, so I'll finally get to model some inorganic stuff aswell, jack-hammer, some environment, lots of concrete, stones etc... then I'll have to rig the freakin' worker and pose him to look very tired and annoyed at the same time... and at the end... rendering on A3 @ 300dpi -> print -> exposrue :D

To hpslashluvr: check would be fine  ;)

Like I said before, the demon kicks ass. Too bad your client cancelled the project :( , but at least now you've come through with a badass hellspawn on your hands (OK, maybe CG hellspawns aren't as good as paychecks, but yours is pretty damn good :) ). My only crit is that those veins are kind of sharp, and look a little bit unnatural (the ones on the forehead look great, but the ones on the neck need work). Yeah I hope to see an update on the construction guy, and good luck with your other projects :) .

Heya Phynius Gauge, how are you? ;) Yeah... it suxxx that there's no "reward" for my work on the demon... but thank you for the kind comments! and I started a new WIP thread for the demon, so, anyone can check it out here THE LINK (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=229144#post229144) and I don't have to post off-topic pics here, which is meant to be a place for my employee :D

Thank you again and see you as soon as I finish the demon with some cool concepts for the construction guy! :!!!: :D

on the gloves, the index finger and the ring finger look like they should be swapped. looking at my own hand, my ring finger is the same length as the index finger, on the other hand, the ring finger is slightly longer. in both cases, the ring finger is thicker at the end - not as pointy as the index.

maybe that's just my hand. :P

Really lil' update after a while... well... little, in terms of the project, but huge in terms of the guy's face, 'coz I've repainted, yet again :D, most of the textures, changed the shaders and finished some new textures on his face, the new textures are mainly local masks for some of the channels used. I plan on creating new eye shaders. He's still missing hair and eyebrows etc... those ones are just proxies... I'll prolly use HairFX (if I'll have some time at work after the main job is done) or Ornatrix, which I find very cool!

Hope you'll like it and post some comments and if you see this for the first time, please take some time and skim through the whole thread, you'll make me happy :D

hey loocas long time no talk, your model is looking really good, however, i must say that the eyes are looking a little flat, and not very reflective. i know that you are going for the dirty, grimy look, but they still would still have some sort of mucas in them to keep that more shiny than they appear to be as of now. as for the textures, as always, they are looking good. i do hope that you do add hair again, as you did before, because that looked tremendous.

good to see that you are still working on this project, because it is one of the best in the forums:)

keep updating as much as possible;)

loocas
07-10-2004, 09:35 AM
To neiy0: Man, thanks a lot for the encouragement! :) don't worry, I wanna finish this project, because I wanna get it in some competitions and also expose it in printed version somewhere as well ;) Anyways... I have some problems with the eyes, coz they seem to not reflect anything unless I overexagurate the HDRi's exposure a lot, which is not right... As for the hair/stubble/eyebrows etc... I'll do that in the end, because I don't want to spend additional minutes on every single test render I wanna show off, you know what I mean... so, he'll have fully 3d hair/stubble and eyebrows definitely, but in the end... :)

07-10-2004, 11:32 PM
Hey guy, very nice model. I also think you need a little more work on the eyes... and maybe the eyelashes? Don't know but I'd maybe try to fix it a little they seem to me like the ones of a doll... It's only a suggestion.

Anyway, great work!

I know what's missing to this character! First, the irisis must have some darker color. The miss life right now. Second, the character needs some facial bump mapping! And the diffuse needs a lot of work. Would be better to use a real person photo to strech it over your UVW in photoshop. Good luck!

loocas
09-10-2004, 07:08 AM
To neiy0: :D yeah... I know, but that's one of the things made on purpose ;)

To Avatar-3DT: Hmmm... I'll be reworking the eyes completely, so, that should be allright... The diffuse... what is wrong with it? I'm finally happy with it and it seems like I'm wrong again :) I used a photo ref. for the diffuse in the first place, but it didn't give me the look I was after, so I painted the whole textures from scratch... Well... it's still a heavy WIP, so I'll be definitely touching it sooner or later ;) THX fro the comments guys! I really appreciate that!
