A couple of new-b questions about 3ds max. First of all (as you will see in the image) I have filled all my material slots, I’m sure there is a way of unlocking more to work with, but after about 2 hours of trying I decided just to write this.
Secondly I want some lights in a scene but don’t want to use them at the mo. If I hide them the light they cause still renders, how do I temporarily hide them to the camera without moving or deleting them.
Thanks to all those who respond.

Hey,
To hide the light(s) select it and turn it off,to turn it off go to the modifier tab and look somewhere at the top of the light settings, Disable the "on" button.
The material editor can't have more than 6x4 slots, but there is a trick to get more.
Click on one of the materials and click on the "Standard" button and change it to multi sub object, keep the old material as a sub object material. You will see that you have like 10 new materials in it and all have a material ID.
You will need to assign material ID's to your objects, to do that throw a material modifier on your object and give it the correct material ID number and apply the material to the object.

also you don't need to have all your materials listed, you can use the slots for new materials and then if you need to get an old material back use the eyedropper to grab it from the scene
also i'm not sure why you didn't want the lights to be on, but if you meant that you wanted to be able to just use the default rendering light, that is only active when you have no lights in the scene...so turning off your lights will not cause the default light to come on
