View Full Version : Living on the cheap!

Gidday gidday =) I'm in the process of moving into a flat by myself, so my rent is about to go up. I'm also paying off my computer, and I'm about to take out a loan to buy 3dsmax (it's not tool big a loan- I have some of the money saved already). On top of that, exactly half my weekly wage goes towards hiring a plane to go flying once or twice a week (building up hours towards a commercial pilot's licence).
So! I need every possible tip for living on the cheap! How do all you starving artists get by without...eh...starving? =P
Cheers-

If I haven't been flying for more than a week or so, I get all tense and edgy and irritable. Longer than that, I start twitching and chewing on things. I'm addicted =P
To get a student version of Max, I'd have to be a student. No such luck =P
Bread and butter sounds like the plan, then. *grin*
just buy the things you really need , and dont wast your money on things that you will throw away after you buy them for like a week

well take it from me, it's a big adjustment, I went from not paying for food or rent to paying everything and paying for university...
first of all, flying, are you nuts? Scratch that... As for buying expensive software, well, if you really want it, but make sure you can pay at least the minimum montly payments.
For food, I allow myself 200 a month. From that, 50 is a big bucket of mega mass protein, so 2 shakes a day for 1 month. And for regular food, roughly 40$ a week for milk/meat/vegetables/fruit and stuff.
As for going out, having fun... that's where it hurts, gotta try to incorporate it in the budget, lol
ps. oh yeah, for rent, a roomate is always good, 1/2 or everything you know

If he wasn't nuts, he wouldn't be human... :)...
Save up some money before getting Max. Pay off everything else first. Have a big stash of cash hidden away somewhere. And each week, I try to keep my account balance above a certain figure. And don't buy dvds or stuff like that for a while. Have 50 quid/dollars/wotever currency you use for food...
No idea if it works or not tho. I still live with my rents.

Budget..budget...budget.... your money! In short, do the math and write it down! Set your priorities and if there is room for eating in there... great.
Wait till ya have to pay the rent, all the other bills and raise 4 kids.:)
imo..flying is for the birds:D

Well you can cook your meals once a week and freeze them in, microwave them afterwards, but that doens't save money, only dishes and time.
Oh and if you get enough vitamins (pills) you don't crave as much food.

yeah, ramen noodles. but bread and butter? maybe bread and peanut butter (probably the 1950's equivalent of noodles). don't drive. don't fly. cancel your cable (if you're really broke, both modem and TV). eat cheap food (get, but don't buy or steal, maybe, yourself a little fridge). don't eat out. don't go out on dates, with friends to clubs, or anywhere. if the flat is going to cost you too much, get another roomie :P. and lastly, hmmm...
what DanielB said.

yea, noodles are king. :) and when your friends who have money go out to get pizza, steal their pizza sallad... it's not very filling, but you can live off it. :P
Oh, and flying.. are you mad? Ditch the flying and replace it with smoking, they can both get you killed.. but smoking is cheaper!

my god, no cable, no internet, no food? what's he gonna do?
Guess I'm lucky, I have free cable since they forgot to disconnect it, been free for last 6 months. But I pay 15 for cable internet and 370 a month for rent. Add 200 for food. What's the point of malnutrition, 50 a week gets you by fine, ennough for all basic food groups. If he has a job he should be fine. Just needs a roomate so basic house bills are / 2.

ehehehe :D I already don't drink, smoke, drive or gamble, so those are covered. And since those are the main reasons to go out, I don't do that either. I don't watch free-to-air TV; I can't even imagine paying for it :p
Anyway, flying's firmly on the cards. The only things that beat flying on the budget are the things that will get me evicted/arrested if I ignore them. Seriously, you should all go to the local aeroclub and have them take you up in a light plane, take the controls for a while, follow through the landing, then tell me it's not worth $200(NZ) a week :p
Cheers X)

That depends on wheather or not one is affraid of heights.
And IDownUpI. The amount of time it takes is irrelevant. Its the "attempt" that matters;)... heh... tho the slaming into the ground part is sort of a bonus... ;)...

I can't believe your thinking of moving out and flushing 200$ a week down the toilet for flight school. For a month that's 800$, jeez that's more than twice what I pay in rent monthly. If you can afford it, props to you, but it's a huge waste.

if flying means so much to him we should accept that he needs to spend some money on it. it might be worth consiering another flight school or less hours per month, though.

Oh well, like they say, any landing is a good landing.:D

I agree. I'm not sure you can take less hours though, if it's anything like shooting, you loose the hang of it pretty fast.
If it's not, definately worth a try, just halving the time will save you 400
BTW, isn't it so that once you've got your license you have to keep up a certain amount of hours per year not to loose it?

Hey. One small tip is if you buy bread to buy the day old bread at the bakery, as it is usually on clearance.
Good luck!

screw buying bread. If you live in a city, find some bakeries, and stake out the dumpsters behind them. I know of two in my area that throw out the two-day-old bread, put in nice clean plastic bags in the dumpster. If you aren't too picky, that's some good eats.
If you happen to live in a place with lots of hippies, find a food co-op or community garden. Growing and sharing food can be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying it.
Besided that, there's the usual stuff-- don't buy furniture, sleep on the floor, and only use lights occasionaly, to keep utilities down. Good luck on the whole flying thing....at least it's cheaper than a heroin addiction!

Man, don't ditch the flying. I been taking care of my eyes religeously for years because I have aspiriations to be a pilot. I'll tell you what, if I had the ambition, daring and cash to take flying lessons, i'd ditch 3D, computers, even drumming to learn to fly...
Ramen noodles are great if you wanna keep your stomach full... Other than that I have no experience with.
DanielB, please PM me or email me with some sort of meal plan. I swear I have an eating disorder. I can't think of anything to eat, thus I get bad nutrition, thus i'm gaining weight a lot slower than I want to be ... :( *help*
