hi!

This is my 2nd serious car! I made some other wheels vehicles but without so many details as this jaguar.

I started this car a lot of months ago! I made some progress and then it was in the freezer for a long time. Few days ago i started to work on it again. I will try to remove its WIP condition! : )

this picture is how it looks the last time I was working on it (months ago). It was made in max 5 and with brazil, now im working in max 6 with vray.

I made a lot of progress last week. I will show you this progress with some more pictures first so ill get some feedback about this work. I will tell you when the pictures you are seing are the actual state of the car.

hope you like it.

here you can see some problems with the door. I really had a lot of problems modeling the doors.

cbaristo looks really nice so far! What are you planning to do next? Do u want to work some more on the exterior? You also want an interior?

novoAlias

cool, looks a little long even for an e type tho ;)

cbaristo
14-06-2004, 01:09 AM
hi zuc,
There is few more things to model in the exterior like door handles, mirrors, etc., and then the interior.

I found some things to fix in the main body but I will make this corrections at the end of the project.

This is the second version. This was rendered with Vray. Every mat was erased and I come back to clay look. I modify some little details on the main body like the "interior edge", now it has some kind of "wall" that continues the door shape and I did model some new details like mirrors, door handles and seats.

cbaristo
14-06-2004, 01:17 AM
here you have a couple of pictures of the seats.

cbaristo
14-06-2004, 01:24 AM
hi blackwolf,
thanks dude

about the long of the car: I used blueprints, so if the car looks longer than the real one i picked bad bluerpints : ( hope not.
But I have a lot of photo references and a bburago model and I think the long is ok.

thanks for the replys and comments guys!

O man i love the rims on that car how did u create them please give a brief description. Thanks

PS pics would be nice to on how u did it lol

cbaristo
14-06-2004, 08:40 AM
no problem whiteboy, here you have a description of the entire wheel. Its simple.

see the attached picture,
a. this piece still needing extra drawings so it is momentary. It is just a spline + lathe modificator right now. I think I will make it an editable poly to make the drawings. The color difference was made with differents IDs in the spline and using a multi/sub object material.

b. another simple spline + lathe modificator.

c. and another

d. this is an editable poly with meshsmooth.

The hardest thing about this wheel was the rays position because I never found a good picture with this detail.
I just got positioned a couple of rays in the final position and using the piece c as center of rotation I made an array to get the count of rays I was looking for.

each ray is just a line (spline) rendereable with some thickness.

thanks for posting,
hope helps
cya

edit: change just an english problems : (

It looks really nice so far, only one crit! I think the back of the seats is a little too thin if you know what I mean! It's ok if u used some ref pics but it still looks a little too thin for me! Maybe make it thicker...

cbaristo
14-06-2004, 09:36 AM
hi again zuc,

I dont know exactly what direction are you talking about, a? or b?
but anyway I agree that the back seat looks thin from any point of view. But this is how it is. At least the one I took as reference.

This seat doesnt look comfortable at all. its very small!
I studied industrial design and this seat proportions are not in any book i think! But we are talking about a sport car from the 50s, and at this time the ergonomy wasnt as important as today in the car industry, sepecially at sport race cars.

zuc
15-06-2004, 04:53 AM
Yes, well, weird, I have never seen that type of car seats:). I meant the b picture, even with the ref pic it still looks a little thin! Well, It is really confortable where yor butt is :) and at the back it looks stiffy. Lol, it's a weird seat design:) Crazy ppl those days:) lol
Got some updates?

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 05:08 AM
update, lets put some color to the project. This is just the v12 over a plane, there is no car here, just a test render now with vray.

I will have more updates later, after work.

zuc
15-06-2004, 05:34 AM
ccol! Ir looks nice! U use HDRI?

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 05:46 AM
thanks, yes I used a vray HDRI map.

I love these Jags and am following this thread with gusto. This last emblem is awesome. Show us a nonsmoothed wire.

Thanks for the tut. I also used renderable splines on my wires.
Also, your model deserves better tires. they look like tube objects. You may "fatten" their cross section for more realism. And to add yet more realism flatten and bulge them out at the bottom.

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 08:26 AM
hi dan, thanks for your comments and welcome to the thread.

yes you are absolutly right, those tires are kind of simple stuff. I made this at the very start of the project and the entire job quallity went up but the tires stills the same. I was thinking to remake the tires in the near future making new drawings on it. the jag definitively deserve this change!

I will make those deformations you are talking about. I was thinking about a displacement plane so I can animate the tire and keep the deformation in place.

is a gusto to see more people posting some feedback like you guys!

cya.

PS. I will post the wire you asked for later, once at home!

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 12:59 PM
hi,

here is the v12 wire.
The first thing modeled was the "V", I used the symmetry modifier to build it and once done I converted it into an editable poly in order to make the "12".

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 05:48 PM
following the 3Dan comment I went for better reference pictures and I totaly remade the tires!
Now i think i have the same quality of details than the rest of the car.

There is only one thing missing about the tires, the drawings, I wont model it because it is so mesh expensive and i think this is unecesary. I will use bump mapping for this stuff.

about the making of the new tire I made it almost in the same way than the original one so the "tutorial" wont change a lot. There is some new objects like a lot of spheres and a new poly piece at the end of the rays, simple new stuff.

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 06:08 PM
now the rim has the right number of rays and it looks much better with the chrome applied. I will work in the mats and specially in the tire bump mapping in the future, now i am going back to the rest of the car.

15-06-2004, 06:26 PM
SUPERB are the rims, the V12 logo, the seats !! EXCELLENT! !!

on the other hand I still don't feel fully convinced about the exterior. I don't know if it's the bad blueprints you said you got, but it looks somehow flat and streched, like if it had been smashed as a rubber.....

Maybe I should look at the car in real life.....

in any case you already have an astounding model...keep it up !!!! want to see more

travis_jinx

nice work, looking really good.
just wondering what HDRI image are you using on your rims, looks sweet !

cbaristo
15-06-2004, 07:33 PM
hi everybody,

ZUC: once again thanks for your comments.

NICO: Hi man, thanks for the kind words. I checked the car proportions once again and once again I found the car is ok. I attach a render with the blue prints. Once done I look at this render and one think I realize is that I modeled the car without the ceiling and this is maybe why the car looks flat or something.

Anyway you have to remember that this car should be a very long one because it has a V12 ENGINE inside the front and this is not a small baby, and a big back too.

tomorrow I will make a last test rendering my car from the same angle of some reference picture so I can get a real idea of the proportions.

TRAVIS_JINX: Thanks man, I got the HDRI from this webpage: http://www.debevec.org/Probes/
this is the page from the official brazil HDRI tutorial (www.splutterfish.com). The one from the rim is "Campus at Sunset"

3DAN: as an e-type lover i really would like to have your opinion about the car proportions, so if you are there and have some free time let me know what you think

thanks guys!

cbaristo

one question, I dont know how to solve this union.
I have no pictures with this detail.

so, does anybody have an idea on how to solve this detail?

thanks in advance

wow, how did i miss this? very sweet car! I remember in Sega GT 2002 this was one o fmy favorite cars, but i couldnt find any good places for blueprints. Anyways, its a very nice job on a very nice car. The seats look great as well. In fact everything baout it lol. I love the shift boot. The only thing that i saw I think is that the trunk looks like it had a couple of alignment issues. Anyways, keep it up, its very sweet :)

edit: heres a picture i found, it looks like its really close up to the dashboard or whatever, but ill try and find some more pictures for you

Mystikos :
thanks dude, i really like the wheels too, they looks much better and more real than the originals to me.

mrc64 :
thanks man, I will post something like a small tutorial later. By now here is a small settings explanation:

its very simple, there is no trick at all. All you need is to have Vray but you can get the same results using another renderer with very similar settings.

V12 CHROME
..:: VRAY MATERIAL
........:: LIGHT GRAY DIFFUSE COLOR
........:: WITH REFLECTIONS
.............:: WITHOUT GLOSSY
.............:: WITHOUT FRESNEL
.............:: WITHOUT FALLOF MAP

.............:: HARD THRESHOLD
....................:: HIGH 0,6
....................:: LOW 0,4
........:: WITH VRAY HDRI MAP IN THE ENVIRONMENT SLOT

CAR PAINT
..:: VRAY MATERIAL
........:: DARK RED DIFFUSE COLOR
........:: WITH REFLECTIONS
.............:: WITH FRESNEL FALLOFF MAP
.............:: WITHOUT GLOSSY
........:: WITH LOW AMOUNT REGULAR NOISE BUMP MAP (EVEN LOWER THAN THE CHROME AMOUNT)
.............:: SMALL SIZE (BIGGER THAN THE CHROME)
.............:: NOT SO HARD THRESHOLD
....................:: HIGH 0,8
....................:: LOW 0,2
........:: WITH VRAY HDRI MAP IN THE ENVIRONMENT SLOT

hope helps dude.

Hi man, its nice to see an old threedy car modeler here. I cant see the aligment issues you are talking about, please tell me where!

Thanks for the picture, it helps me a lot and gives me some new details to model too.

well, updates..

here you have another view of the interior. Now you have a complete idea.

mmm :D it's looking better and better

I know you are in the test stage....there's still aliasing here and there and some areas look faceted....

but that's nothing serious the day you finish your model, add iterations and then go to bed to wake up a few hours later to see a wonderfully smooth Jaguar :P

wanna see more of the interior getting done !!

MariusvZyl

hey cbaristo, its really looking amazing. When i get home i will circle a couple things that i see. The things that i see are probably like present on most cars, but if ur aiming for the number one perfect top mint car model then i have like 2 things to circle maybe? Ill do it after this computer final, everyone elses computer is broken haha. Anyways, good luck! Ill also try and find more interior pictures for you

cbaristo

hi again

jawahar and idan:
thanks dudes
I dont have too much free time so better than make a setting description or "tut" about the materials I uploaded a zip with the complete v12 scene. There you have mats and mesh. Of course you will need vray if you wanna render it.

here is the file: www.cbaristo.com/threedy/jaguar_v12.zip (http://www.cbaristo.com/threedy/jaguar_v12.zip)

what you wont find in the zip is the hdri map, but you can download it here: http://www.debevec.org/Probes/

I insist, those mats are simple stuff, no big deal.
there is a bonus wallpaper into this zip too : )

nico:
hi bro, thanks for your comments.
yes you are right, the car has some faceted areas.
But I think increasing the iterations wont be my solution because I will over charge the mesh in other places that are ok right now. To keep the amount of mesh as low as possible is something important to me, so I will check out the car looking for those faceted areas and add some mesh there and only there.

MariusvZyl:
hi dude!, thanks for the english class!! : P
I will check that thing about the headlights it looks that you are absolutly right.

sarN

the V12 on the trunk doesn't seem to be as realistic as the one in the close up shot, so you check that out cos' you don't wanna waste that beautiful piece.

And I would work a just a little bit more on the leather hood you are just a few inches away from getting it right.

yes, use it as bump map.

nico!
you are right dude, Im having some problems with vray bump mappings. The closeups works fine but when I step back a little the bump just dissapear. The v12 bump mapping is kind of small so it is comprensible, but in the headlights I used a really big bump amount and the effect is allmost unvisible when you are not rendering the detail in big.

so, i dont know.

cbaristo
22-06-2004, 06:27 PM
