View Full Version : speed modelling challenge week 1 - gyroscope

Time for a little challenging fun,
following on from the success of the flashlight thread we thought we'd introduce a weekly speed modelling challenge.
The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it.
2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc.
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable:)
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries
I've had a word with Tom and he's agreed to offering prizes of a 3D Total texture CD to the best entrant. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email.
so, here we go, with your first challenge
deadline - midnight GMT Wednesday 23rd June
modelling time - 45 minutes
subject - Gyroscope
Have fun

I was wondering when this was gonna happen. And winning a texture cd is the icing on the cake, so I belive I shall be joining.:D

Oh yeah, I have another question. Does making the materials count as time spent on the model? Cause sometimes it can take awhile to make the right settings to get the look you want.
EDIT: Oh yeah. second question...is there a 1 model per entry? Instead of posting multiple ones.
EDIT2: Cross out both questions. Im blind as a bat.

Andy_k-3DT
18-06-2004, 04:50 AM
what is a gyroscope?
"A device consisting of a spinning mass, typically a disk or wheel, mounted on a base so that its axis can turn freely in one or more directions and thereby maintain its orientation regardless of any movement of the base."
Sorry, my Austrian language is non existant but in German I believe the word is "Gyroskop"
now come on folks, it's not our job to do the research for you as well :)

Andy_k-3DT

no need for post production really, we are looking at the modelling and giving you a target of organising your own workflow. The render is just to show your work :)

it's not that we weren't listening just that we just didn't have the time to organise this and keep it running. We've had other competitions, there are more to come which we are organising behind the scenes, the forums to run and of course our own full time jobs to do.
Anyway, it's here now, so let's see a few entries and thanks to those that suggested it in the first place :)

Hey!
I just joined but I've been frequenting this place for a year or 2 now from 3dTotal. Anyhow I just wanted to say this speed modelling thing is an amazing idea and I'll definitely join the next one. I look forward to being a part of such a cool community.

no excuses bunny, join in on this one, it was only launched today so there's plenty of time - after all it should only take about an hour of your time :)

I had an idea for this for awial but I was thinking have a whole forum for it...where people do speed modeling and "battles"(see first link below to get an idea).
There is one Arena that I like to visit everynow and then to see what kind of art people have made but it is for Photoshop.
photoshop arena (http://www.flashkit.com/board/forumdisplay.php?forumid=77)
Do yourself a favor and check that out.
I don't see why we can't have the same thing just in the 3D world...I was thinking how it would work and then I ran across this thread the other day.
Flashlight battle! (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19125)
If you read through it you see...in a way they have a battle going on.
SO there ya go...I think it would work, I"d gladly join in the battles even though my 3d skills are...none existant, still be fun.
I would join in this speed modeling but Have to go right now...I"ll post later tonight hopefully, good luck to all and more importantly have fun!
later.
edit: Sorry bout that...links fixed.

hey, i got an idea of how u guys could improve ur comp:
instead of just posting 'the comp has begun u can start now' why don't u announce a starting date and time and only give away the theme when that time arrives - that way u don't have to rely on somit as subjective as honesty :halo:

well, i think and i hope that everyone how joins this is honest.
it isnt worth betraying anyway, cos' there are no 'great' prices.
and i think Andy and Tom can figure out whether something was done in about 45 minutes or in 3 hours...

mr demon,
I considered doing a challenge at a set time but then we have the problem that not everyone will be able to enter as we all live in different time zones, what suits me as the person setting the challenge may be totally unsuitable for someone on the other side of the world who wishes to enter.
It's a fun challenge and the prizes we are offering are nice but not really worth cheating for. Besides, if somebody cheats, who are they cheating? This is designed as a "real world" modelling challenge, think about it, a client calls you and says can you do me a model of ******* in an hour as I need to show it to somebody? In that scenario there is no cheating, you either do it or fail :)
We are trying to give people a chance to organise their workflow, improve their modelling skills and have a little fun along the way.
By not setting exact times when these challenges will be held obviously relies on people being honest but we feel that's part of the fun and as someone else has already said, we will be pretty quick to spot models that folks have spent 2 days working on :)

I remember that game as an Amiga game - in fact I've still got a copy somewhere and an amiga to play it on :) - it was a variation on marble madness - now how many hours did i waste playing that game? :)

its not very good, not even close to the standard u guys are doing, but was fun :) (until i noticed one of my booleans had foobed costing me about 5-6 minutes work :/). i'm not very quick at max at the best of times, i know a grand total of 0 shortcut keys lol :D but, heres my go, wont win, but a nice idea for a comp :)
Time: Modelling 40 minutes Textureing: 2 Minutes (max materials baby! :D) Render: 2 secs

I wonder if I'm the only one who's noticed a distinct likeness between Otacon's gyroscope modelled in Lightwave and this one for sale on Turbosquid from December 2002 ?

If I believed in coincidences I'd say it was a miracle :)

Now now Andy, I even own a gyroscope that looks exactly like that and have never seen that one from TurboSquid. The star figure thing is fairly popular, not to mention that I thought the design didn't have to be original.
Anyways, any idea what the next topic will be? As I can't get a decent gyro going.

Ok, finally, heres my attempt. been fiddling on and off for 3 days with the lighting and textures.
Modelling: 40 Minutes
Texturing and test rendering setup, about 4 hours in total
Final render time: 3 minutes ish (800x600)
System: Pentium 4 HyperThreading 3GHZ 512mb DDR RAM, Geforce FX 5600 with 256mb RAM
Heres what I used:
3D Studio MAX 6 SP1, a HDRI Environment Image for the nice reflections, Vray for render. Everything is box modelled primitives, and then cloned to make the rest up, which really sped things up.
Really enjoyed doing this, might have another go...!

the plan was to have it in a snow cone esque shape thing, but i wnt with the diamond shape instead, the center, the plan was to have a orb with an hour glass in it, like i have, but the hour lass is empty, i didnt get time to fiddle that :/ i made that up, so i assume it still counts :D
i hope they link :/

Heres my little effort. Took to a more old styled ( i guess ) gyroscope.
Software: 3ds max 6
Modeling: 34 minutes
Rendering: brazil r/s 1.2
Here we go, my 2 cents (worth of modelling)...
I was goin for a modern look, but lost it with the stand... ah well, i was tryin to think of sumtin to stick in the middle but nothing came to mind.
Modelling, roughly 40 mins
Rendering, roughly .40 secs
Texturing roughly 2-3 mins

Hi Everyone,
Just as a matter of interest, is this a 'life-like' modeling competition, or just a modeling competition? Wondering as many seem to be recreating referenced objects, rather than more conceptual scenes. Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick. Especially as it is much harder to recreate something real, rather than me using the scapegoat of something that dosn't really exist.... :-)
Love the style Otacon...
Many thanks,
Tom

the brief is "model a gyroscope" nothing more specific than that.
Now the rest is up to you to interpret how you see fit as long as it's a gyroscope.
The laws of physics will to a degree limit just how much freedom you have in creating conceptual stuff - it needs to work, therefore it needs a large freely rotataing mass/object at it's centre.

Here's another angle of mine. I added an Environment map to the shaders. Adds more color and life to my previous render. Reminds me of all the hours I spent playing with a gyroscope just like this. Great thread!:D

hi everyone,
my image is done in maya+MR in 25 minutes, 15 for model ( i used primitive object with the torus, only one revolve profile curve, and after detached in five parts, and one extrusion on path for very fast modeling ;) , for rendering i used one ramp texture, one map Hdri with final gathering (preview setting for fast rendering :D )

Hey guys,
First I'd like to say that there are some really imaginative and beautiful pieces on this thread.
I started modeling a piece from one of my favorite shows today, and it turned into a gyro. I disqualify myself in the competition since I don't know how long it took me, this was just for fun. With that said, keep'em comin' guys.

Great idea Tom! I would be glad to see some more speed modelling challenges in the future. I guess I cant win this one, but maybe the next! :)
I think its a great idea, its great for n00bs like me too, coz i dont get bored of a project coz i cant do it very well. As i only have a set time limit to do it. It will also help my creativity with thinking of a sci-fi concept (i just like sci-fi).
So yeh, i cant wait for this speed model forum.
and BTW, should i just go and do the 3d total tuts on Brazil and that to be able to render better. Coz i have nfi about making cool textures and that. I've basically only been messing around with particle stuff the last 6 months. Still, i made a pretty butterfly for some chick friends of mine.
+ No prizes for guessing what one of Mr. Glass's favourite shows is :P

Time spent spinning in chair to understand gyroscope physiques: 3hrs 23min

Just something else to consider: the time to research what needs to be built. I know this one is pretty simple, but sometimes it takes a while to find good reference...
One thing that might be interesting is to actually post specs/diagrams of something to be built... then have one image emailed to you folks to be displayed after the deadline... I don't know, I'm just overthinking it ;)
Just a thought,
andy
Andy_k-3DT
22-06-2004, 02:49 AM
I considered doing just as you said Andy, but at the end of the day it doesn't always happen like that in the real world and giving exact schematic diagrams will stifle the creativity we are seeing on this thread.
Trust me on this one, I'll try and tailor the weekly challenge objects to things that can be easily referenced (I'll run a google search etc first just to make sure).
Of course, things may change as this challenge evolves, but we want it to remain as fun and relatively simple for all who enter whilst everyone benefits.

Here is my contribution to the topic.
Modelling time: 45 min (time was running out but I managed it in time)
Time for setting up lightning, materials & rendering: ~2:15 h (I played around with some settings)
I think this speedmodelling thread is a very good enhancment so I'am looking forward to the next topic!
Since the last one I made was of a more classic style, I thought I'd do a more futuristic version.
Here's the textured one.
40 minutes of modelling

Max 6 and finalRender
three minutes left until midnight here...

Calm down.
This speed challenge is more about learning new things and honing your skills rather than winning. You can still post your gyros for people to see.
Mr. Glass
24-06-2004, 08:45 PM
I agree with otacon, I just barely missed the deadline, but it's not a big deal. These challenges are supposed to be practice at honing your skills, and more importantly, fun. If you want to show off what you made go for it. They won't be entered, but if you're proud of your work then show it off. Besides, there's a new challenge up, you've got 7 more days to do it all over again, but this time, get it in before 12 GMT.

24-06-2004, 08:48 PM
nice work all
ill do this next one what ever it is methinks..
I agree with Octagon and Mr Glass (and Blackwolf!)
The idea of the speed modelling "contest" is to be kind of a carrot for all modellers.
It's just something to focus the creativity at.
For example, people have overshot the 45 min and posted their result anyway, so the rest of us can see the result anyway.
It's more about triggering each other into great ideas.
I've had tons of inspiration by modelling and by looking at awesome posts here. (Which reminds me, there are a couple of people here who really, to share with the community, should make some nice tutorials...) :)
And about deadlines.
I've learned through hard work that deadlines are the finishline that you can't budge. A professional artist respect the deadline and do everything in his/her power to make it (including double-checking when it is).
About GMT:
Time zones can be tough to consider, but hey, I live in Sweden and always have to follow other time zones, if it's in my job, at eBay, for contests, for meetings etc.
Here's the official link for GMT:
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/
And here's an okay map, which you can download and print.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezonemap.htm
...so no one misses the next modelling challenge due to some time trouble.
Cheers people!
Good luck and happy modelling to you all.
Get going on that toothbrush!

25-06-2004, 01:05 AM
yeah, i only entered cos i knew it'd be fun, no chance of winning, but a nice side distraction :) don't gett all worked up cos u didnt read andys messages :D
and GMT is the time that ur time is worked off of generally, hence whenever u install windows or whatnot is goes "GMT -6" etc
Andy_k-3DT
25-06-2004, 01:25 AM
Yep, GMT is the "standard" by which all time is measured since it's measured from the Greenwich Meridian - 0 degrees longitude.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/
I actually ended the challenge using the forum time because I noticed it was wrong and thought that it was fair to all to end with a clock that was clearly visible
These things have to end sometime and right at the start I specified the deadline and as others have said it's just like working in the real world where you have to match your time with the "clients"
I've just spent the last 3 months working for a couple of clients in the USA and had to work on their time - so my working day with them was starting at 8pm in my time zone and ending at 5am.
If you missed the deadline, I'm sorry but there's always the next challenge and any time you've spent planning etc will stand you in good stead when it comes to organising your work in future - nothing is wasted, it's all about learning :)

giving everyone a score and ranking would almost seem to take the fun out of the speed modeling. Even though i wasnt able to participate in this one, i see this a a good way to just get better at what we all love to do. The point is not to win and score higher than everyone else but to get better at modeling under pressure...and have fun while at it. you can still post your work in the forums... many artists will gladly give you their opinion of your model, be it praise or crit..

let's try and answer a few points here before this gets out of hand
1, Nobody was "screwed by a stupid time zone rule" that rule was clearly stated in original brief. If you didn't read that you weren't disqualified because of the time zone but because of your inability to fully understand something nearly everybody else managed with no problem
2, you can see how your images stack up against other peoples by looking through them
3, what are you suposed to learn? That's up to you, may I suggest reading and understanding briefs, planning your workflow, how to take a few shortcuts that save time, brushing up on modelling techniques, how to have fun with the rest of the community etc etc etc
4, why should entries that are entered late be included in the judgng? That's the whole point of challenges and deadlines. If you don't make the closing date or the deadline then you don't get to enter. do we have to judge every single entry even if it arrives 6 months after the closing date?
5, All future challenges will be run along the same lines with the same time limits and deadlines.
6, This is a fun challenge so organising a peoples vote would take too much time, Tom and me went through the entries this morning and chose a winner who's announced in the next post.
7, rifz. so far you have made 4 posts to this community. One was your image which was after the deadline and the other three have been complaining about the rules. Not the most auspicious start to your membership is it?
8, it's been said before and I'll repeat it now, this challenge is just for fun with the added bonus of a prize awarded to the best submission in the judges opinion. Agree with it or not I'mafraid that's the way things are going to carry on.

Let me start by saying thanks and well done to all those who entered our first speed modelling challenge. It's proved very popular and we'll ensure that it carries on.
We saw a huge variety of entries from all levels of modellers and using many different platforms. There were some very good models and some very nice renders and hopefully everyone has learned something.
As with all competitions there has to be an overall winner and after a lot of thought we've selected the model Chipnuts submitted. It's simple, clean and illustrates a gyroscope perfectly.
So, congratulations Chipnuts, if you drop either Tom or myself a message we'll arrange to get your CD shipped

nice model sonic-x, but it wouldn't work from a physics perspective. It would just fall over as the rotation axis of the wheel is free to translate under gravity, without variation in the angular momentum.
