This is a WIP of a fictional lager/liquor for use in a print advertisement. (temp label will be replaced with actual label) I'm going to shoot for a semi-oil-painted look.

Any ideas before I get too far?

I'm using 3DS Max 6 and Mental Ray.

I added a set of keys. Can you guess this is for a "don't drink and drive" ad?

Any tips on overcoming the cliche of a glass bottle? I tried putting a few drops of colored liquid inside, but didn't know if that was enough to draw attention from this being just another bottle pic.

Oh well, you make what you have to, I suppose. When I'm done with this, I'll do some artistic work, instead of creative work.

Any more tips on rendering, etc. are welcome.

Your background seems very plain. Perhaps use a chamfer box instead and flip the normals, that will give you some nicer joins between the floor and walls. Aside from that, i think just keep working on the render, its a little too dak at the moment, and the bottle doesn't seem to use the screen very well.
I agree with the lack of inspiration though, I tried to brainstorm it for a bit, but I like drinking too much to try and put people off :D
Good luck.

Thanks, Desmark. A chamfer box had never even crossed my mind. I was actually going to get rid of the joints all together, so that there didn't appear to be a room or space at all.

I needed to put the bottle off cam a little. I want the pic to look like a still life, but not to feel like one. Does that work this way?

As far as the darkness goes, I'm going to up my global illum. I'm not using final gather because this is set up so that global illum will give me that "painted" look.

Thanks for the crits. More welcome.

I agree it's a little dark

now a couple of suggestions - please feel free to disregard them

Maybe rather than focus on the bottle push the focus on to the keys.

how about having a smashed bottle ? implying that drinking and driving can cause accidents - leave the label intact and visible with a picture of a car wreck on it - good caption there "wrecked? don't drive!" :)

put the keys on a keyring made from a set of handcuffs? implying the illegality of drink driving

adding a breathalyser unit to the scene - maybe inside the bottle?

The glass and the key looks vert good, scene is a bit empty though...

Those are all good ideas, but I'm out to make this look like an advertisement supporting liquor. In fact, I'm thinking of taking the keys out alltogether.

My idea: a caption at top, "Auchlande Lager" and at the bottom, "controlling the population since 1513"

I've tried lots of ways to rephrase the bottom caption, but I like this one because control can mean many things, not just death.

Here's an update with a little more energy and a brighter light. I also fixed my corners by adding the Shell modifier to my box and using Mesh Smooth. I removed the keys (hid them, actually) and am thinking about adding a slight blue tint to the background. Ideas for other colors to add a bit to the overall feel?

They're turning this into a TV ad (Mother's Against Drunk Driving). So I have to animate. Here's a near finished shot, and I'll post the reel soon.
