Sometimes its all in the textures....seriously.
Rule 4:
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
edit: I personally spent over an hour deciding the best way to actually model details...box;spline;etc...

He;;o every one...just submitting an entry moments before closing time...........Its sort of a composition......inspired from my earlier i-sub+i-stick.......However i call it "sound-360" due to its spread of speakers in 3 directions......!!!!
Comments and critics ..more than welcome !!!
All the best ............May the best "speaker" win !!!!!:D :p

Hey, been working on and off the last few days. The models are extraordinarily simple, taking less the 50 minutes, as well as the environment.
Texturing took about 3 hours because of how long glossy reflections take for the test redner. Lighting was really simple set up, rendering time was about 4 hours overall, using QMC secondary illumination in Brazil.
Little bit of PS colour correction as well.
here (http://images.cinenow.com/materiel/7/39/4.751746794.jpg) is the set of speakers they are modeled off.

how did you model those branches?
did you use artisan?
I've had a busy week, but since I swore I'd do atleast one contribution to these comps...
Nothing fun, nothing special... Just my Sony sound system at home.
Time ran out so I had to skip the electric cords and the actual dustcover (a blue ugly thing with a sony logo.. so no loss)
Anyway, here it is.
Time: 45 min (with 5 minutes left I knew I couldn't start on any of the other stuff...)
Textures: 10 minutes, Rendering: about 30min
Software: Max 6
edited-->
I checked and the speakers are for the SA-VE835ED Sony Sound system.
Updated the texture so the details bhind the "net" cover show a little...
<---
I've had no time to go through all the contributions this time, but I guess I'll have to do it when this weeks comp is done.
The things I HAVE seen though have been great.
Good work people!
Cheers!

Just so everyone knows all my pictures are made in 3dsmax 4.2
Ive used no boleans. The textures are mostly procedural textures but lables and stuff are made in photoshop 7.
I've been using max for over 3 years and im 17 years old.
Modelling time for this image was about 43 minutes.
Rendering time was about 4 minutes.
Texturing took me about 15 minutes.
Here's the clay render.
ill post a textured one after.

Hey guys,
Nice work. Really great modelling done by all the participants. Great texturing by some. A few pics were ultra-realistic. So, here is my entry.
I have made three types of speakers of Bose. Though they are sleek and a bit small, they are very powerful loudspeakers according to Bose. I got the reference pics from http://www.bose.com/
In the first pic, there are two typical loudspeakers from bose. One is closed with the panel and the other one is open to show you all how the speakers are arranged. It took just 27 minutes to make it. Very easy indeed.
The Second pic contains again two types of Bose speakers. One is very long and sleek and the other is little short and has a great stand. These speakers took just 23 minutes. They are much easier to model than the previous ones. The reference pics are very important and one should careful look and observe the details.
I used 3dsmax 6.0 and Brazil for rendering. Photoshop for the textures.

Hi all, at first:
Congrats to:
robi : very nice model, and best textures.
chainsaw : the lighting is fenomenal, it looks real.
oinypoind : i like these one ;)
aurorae : very nice render, congrats.
tel : nice model, how much the speakers??
More people have nice models and renders, but these one specially like me, congrat to all.
Ok, here my 5th and last enter to this 4th challenge, at less than 8 hours to deadline ( I think :S)
Modeled in 50 minutes, textures, lights, and set-render, about 2 hours, and render in 32:14 minutes. All in 3DStudio Max 5.
Original model of Pionner, see reference (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/0,,2076_4159_48023,00.html) , a simple description about it:
Pionner Digital Sound Projector (PDSP-1)
500-watt digital sound projector with 254 individual speakers, each with its own compact digital amplifier.
Only 5" thick
It perfectly projects up to seven separate sound beams containing surround sound information (such as Dolby Digital) to pinpoint locations in your media room
We mean YOUR media room. It can be programmed for room size, texture of the floor and walls, and even whether the curtains are open or closed.
Its a "delicatessen" :p and I think just for rich people..

Hi ;)
Ok, here is my entry:
http://gfx.uraldesign.ru/temp/louds01.jpg
Modeling time: 50 min
Shaders/lights/rendering: 30 min
Technique: subdiv. I wanted to do the whole model using subdiv technique, but after first 15 minutes of modeling I understand that I will have no time to prepare mesh for meshsmooth. That why I have used booleans in the final to accomplish details, and thats why wire is so ugly :)
I have no enough time to play with materials and light that why final render isn't so good :(
Here are wires:

Hello everybody,
Here's my render:
Hii Tzstarr...just when i was saying no one came up with i-sub-soundstick....Bang ...u just landed on top of me....We had a sort of simultaneous entry.......I will try to detail it out.......
Stealth3D - Yeah man, within minutes of each other! that's crazy. they certainly are beauties. You've got more detail but I went for thin walls for realistic refraction. I Like your boards. If this happens again next week I'm on my way to India to thrash you! :D
________________
Software: Rhino 2
Modelling time: 50 Mins
Texturing: 10 Mins - could've added the missing detail this way but no time.
Render: Flamingo Raytrace (Rhino plug-in)
Render Time: hours and hours and hours.
Cheers, See you next week.

(keescopy, maybe you weren't talking about me)
Hi everyone,
I totally understand that many of you would doubt that my last post was made in time so here is how i did it, those of you who have maya can see for themselfs that it isnt as complicate as its seems.
1) The flowers:
for example you create a polygon cube no matter the dimensions but make it with divisions like 5 5 5 or 7 7 7 or wathever you like. Then you convert it to subDiv and then go to Modify->Transformation Tools->Move Tool [] an press the little square, then you choose Normal. Now move it by the normal few times in opposite direcctions and you will see how easy is to create those strange flowers (by the way is not something that I invented, i dont remember the name of the guy that called this keleidoscope modeling) so for the flowers is not more than 5 min.
2) The main roots:
For the roots i didnt use artisan, but the tools that i use are maybe maya specific anyway.
-make a few 2D circles place them as you want, the important thing is that the pivot of each circle must be in the 0,0,0
-set the time slider to 30 frames or more or less as you want (this will be the divisions of the roots).
-Now group the circles.
-animate the 2d circles, make them go up and rotate as many times as you will, also you can rezize.
-now that you have an animation of 30 frames here is the trick: I found this tool wonderfull. While you are in the animation set of buttons, go to Animate->Create animation sweep [] and press the little square, then choose Time slider, to do it for the whole 30 frames, and thats it, you have the roots. Then I modified a little the inbetween circles that maya has created to make a bit of noise in the roots (if you have history on).
3) little roots:
made them very fast with nurbs and as I was coping them I was modifyng a bit the vertex and scaling to make them look diferent
4) How i place the little roots so fast:
This is also a very important feature that maya have (I beleave other programs do) that save me a lot of time:
First of all place the pivot point of the object you want to move in a good position, in this case for the little roots at the bigining, then press the move tool and then hold the c key (that is a shorcut for snap to curves), then with the middle mouse button , dont try to move the root itself by pointing at it but rather point and press in the place where you want it to move, if maya found other object behind that place, you will be moving the little root along the closest wireframe of the mesh behind, you can also snap to vertex pressing the v.
so thats how i make it so fast
I hope this will clarify the situation, I hope you can probe it by yourself how easy it is.
If some of you still have questions or dont beleive please tell me i will try to explain it better.
beleive it or not i am happy to share with you this
edit: posted a little better image

nope, we are definitely in the UK which is why we've been running these challenges on GMT - the forum clock is running 8 hours behind GMT because as far as I know our servers are located in the USA (now my head hurts :))
Andy
Orkron
15-07-2004, 04:55 AM
But if the forum runs 8 hrs behind...then wouldn't it be US time?

tee hee Orkron, we said all along we would run by GMT, now the forum clocks are set to GMT - 8 so to find the GMT time you need to forward the clocks by 8 hours - does that make sense?
Anyway, I reckon this waffle takes us up to the deadline - next weeks challenge will be started in a few minutes so it's time to focus on that one.
As usual, we'll get the results to this one posted as soon as possible.

Hi Guys,
Good luck to all!
To the mods, when the results are know would it be a good Idea to repost the winners image at the end of the Thread? or maybe start a new thread with all of the Speed modeling winners posted as they are anounced?
Thanks for these comps.

lots of great models ,love to see who wins
good luck all
To Hellkab:
I did the same last wednesday... Left everything and went to see Spider-man 2. :)
And I have to agree... (as an old spider-man-fan it was even more worth it...)
Andy, about the GMT thing. How good control do you people have over the forum clock settings?
Why not just run it on GMT? I guess it's easier for us europeans to relate to GMT... after all for me it's only one hour away.
Not changing it though will make people learn about the wonderful world of timezones though. :)
Oh and about this weeks challenge.
Good work people!
It was less gruesome and strange this week, but not less creative. (considerably less blood and weapons.. for a strange reason...) :p
Will be fun to see the winner.
Cheers!
Andy_k-3DT
15-07-2004, 02:49 PM
I don't think we can change the forum clock to GMT, however as this challenge is partly about simulating working in the real world an understanding of time zones is pretty important.
Although I'm UK based I work for companies all over the world and sometimes it can get a little chaotic trying to work out what day/time it is when I'm talking to clients and I tend to end up splitting my day into two "zones" morning for European work and evenings for US based work - not that this system works every time but it's some sort of structure :)
As to posting the winners images, well, I've been posting links to them is that not enough or would you all like to see the winners images again?
Andy
I say, do as you've done before... post links.
Works good.

Well done everybody! I pitty the judges having to decide on a winner.
So did u like my second entry...which was a derivative of i-sub.... >>> Page ::17<<< i think !!! flurocent green glow light within the central-glass/acrylic body.......for rave parties...!!!
Hi stealth3D,
Thanks for your comments.
Yeah I like it - could have a laser running up it then being spit at the top and projecting into the sky.Hard to tell scale - something I forgot about with my entry too - but i assume they're pretty big - would have to be to make enough sound at a rave.
In fact I think the i-sub has a blue light either in it or on the casing giving it a glow - Don't think it'd last long at a rave though - someone might stamp on it or think they were being attacked by jellyfish. Hope to see your 'tap' soon in the next challenge. I've just had delived my new 3Ghz/1GB laptop so need to set it up and install software/network so probably won't get round to modelling for a few days. got an idea taking shape in my sketchbook though - Decided to go for something original this time. Hopefully it will differ from yours  :D

hi there, this is my first entry and also the first time i took part in a competition. well i had some trouble with my account activation, so i couldnīt post before 12pm. i know that itīs too late to enter the challenge, but i want to show my work - so i havenīt done it for nothing.
the speakers are giger style, because i didnīt want to model a typical plastic or wooden box. here it is:
time 50 min
soft max6
rendering 4:52
untextured and no lighting except one skylight with default settings. rendered with standard scanline renderer and blur filter, size 4
http://mitglied.lycos.de/PsychoMantis666/speaker/closeup.jpg
http://mitglied.lycos.de/PsychoMantis666/speaker/camview.jpg
http://mitglied.lycos.de/PsychoMantis666/speaker/front.jpg
well its obvious that its impossible to model it out of the head, so i made a sketch, and developed a technique in my head, so i knew what i have to do. basicly itīs just boxmodelling and lots of use of the extrude along spline modifier. itīs easyier than it looks.
here are some other pictures
sketch (http://mitglied.lycos.de/PsychoMantis666/speaker/sketch.jpg)
left (http://mitglied.lycos.de/PsychoMantis666/speaker/left.jpg)
maybe one day itīll be textured, it shall look like an alien - or something i donīt know now. if you wonder about the green rings wich surround the membranes - these are coronas, inspired by bmw headlights - i love these things... and they give the speakers a nice green glow.
hope you like it.

let me get this straight..... that took you 50 minutes??????
Psycho Mantis
16-07-2004, 12:34 AM
yes. about - maybe 5 more -my icq bothered my - but i switched it off. as i said - its helpfull to work with a sketch, or think about the whole thing before modelling it. that helps to prevent mistakes.
i always use editable poly for my moddeling. so i have got some experience on that - and so i know what to do. but i have no clue working with nurbs or splinecages etc... so you see - specialisation is not always the best :D
you can do a lot of this work just with camfering beveling and axtruding - max does the most work for you. it really looks like hard work, but it isnīt and its very fast
I agree,
working with editable poly and then using smoothing groups and a mesh smooth modifier makes it pretty easy to do quite complicated forms...
I checked in to see who won... But I see that Andy and Co are out in the sun haveing a cup of tea.
:D
Or..(revelation.. they are hard at work...)

Once again, congratulations to everyone who took part, the standard, as expected was very high which made judging very difficult. Honourable mentions and very close runners up in no particular order were Tattarn, Cyrix, anduvo, otacon, monkeyhead, bumbi, robi, altruizine, oindypond, aedilhum, hellkab, Qubical, death monkey, cbaristo, sonic x, firebat and laserjock
two winners again this week.
concept speakers has to go to Mr Glass for his wonderful flower speakers
http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=212945
standard speakers goes to Orkron who managed his usual 20 or so entries but this one really stood out.
http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=213174.
If the winners can drop me a line with their contact details I'll arrange to get the prizes sent out.
Just as a note it seems that we have been a bit slow getting stuff out to previous weeks winners. We'll try and make sure everything gets sent out asap but we have been a bit snowed under with stuff over the last couple of weeks. They are all in the system and should arrive pretty soon.
Well done everyone and good luck on the tap challenge

Strange results, I think that there are much more original or technically better modeled speakers in this thread... cant understand the choice of 3dtotal team. When I have read nicknames of the winners I have real problems with remembering they works. Instead of a couple of other works that still are behind my eyes.
Anyway - my congatulations to the winners. :o

why did they win?
well .......
Mr Glass won the "concept" speaker idea because we felt it was a superb design, well thought out and well illustrated.
Orkron won because he presented an accurate model, well rendered in a sympathetic environment that showed all aspects of the loudspeaker design.
Judging will always be subjective and we try to ensure that everyones images are judged in the same way.
What I must add here is that what may have been some very good models were let down by mediocre texturing and worse still by poor lighting. whilst we are not judging on these criteria it makes it very hard for us to judge models that are under lit with heavy shadows when the whole image is out of focus due to over use of Depth of Field. In any competition visual impact is important, you need to make sure we SEE your image :)

Wow, I just wanted to say thanks for the honor. I don't know if I'll be in any challenges for a couple weeks, things have been pretty busy around here lately, but I will be back. Keep up the good work everybody.

I don't think anyone is going to send you anything. Do not bump a 2 year old thread. PM the guy for christ's sake.
