heres my attempt, ran out of time as far as i went out when i was going to be texturing and stuff...

used whole 40mins (well 39 mins and 30 seconds) modelling.

not a great model but my 1st attempt at trying something in restricted time!

time: 39mins 30 seconds
package: lightwave 7.5

and here is a 2nd shot, closer up... excuse the bad shadows... but was a bitch of a render to make (took something like 1 and 1/2 hours .... radiosity! :P)... so didnt have time to go back and make them better... :o

congrtas everybody, I've seen awesome renders here, HDRI works great... but I don't know how to use it... do I need plugins or something? I have MAX5...

so, here is mine
imagine that you are in a desert and you find a tap in the middle of nowhere... from the distance you can see a red button and a blue one (I know that the word is not button, but my english sucks..) you think that they might be for cold or hot water... but they're not... they are for:

- PEPSI & COKE -
:D

model: 35min
textures: 15min
render: 1min

Hello, I'm new to the board and this speed challenge thing seemed like a fun thing to try and do. I was going to make an entry for this facet challenge but because it was my birthday I had to stop modeling to go see Spiderman 2. However I thought it would be okay just to post what I did do just to show it and hopefully get some comments on it. :)

Software: 3D Studio Max R3
Modeling: 39 Minutes
Texturing: About 20 minutes
Sink & Water: about 3 hours (Never used Particle effects before)
Only thing I didn't get to make was the knob to plug the sink.

http://img30.exs.cx/img30/8813/Facet_03.jpg

http://img30.exs.cx/img30/1169/Facet_04.jpg

Ah, and a simple question...is it just me or is 3D Studio Max R3 absurdly unstable?

DangerDude
22-07-2004, 05:40 PM
i use 3ds max 4 and my (very short) experiens with max is that it's very instable. But i think that it's partly a hardware problem.

it hapends to me when i have renderd a couple of times with raytraced lighting e.t.c. I think this is a hardware problem, not enough ram.

But i think i found a bug that makes it crash. When you have put meshsmooth on to an objekt and then delete or add a vertex or edge in edit mesh, and then turn meshsmooth back on, max chashes.
This only happens if you put a edit mesh on to ex. a box, but if you convert the box into editable mesh insted this problem dont exist.

MAX DO TEND TO BE UNSTABLE ON SOME MACHINES, DEFFINETLY HARDWARE AND DRIVER PROBLEMS.

WITH THE EARLY 3DSMAX 2 AND 2.2 I HAND NO PROBLEMS ON OLD
MACHINES THAT TIME.
I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH 3DSMAX 3.1 AT ALL BUT PLENTY
PROBLEMS WITH 3DSMAX 4
I USE 3DSMAX 5 NOW. IT CRASHES NOW AND THEN BUT WORKS WELL.
I HAVE 3DSMAX6 BUT RUN 2000 SP2 WHICH IT DOES NOT RUN ON.
GOING TO SETUP A NEW HARDRIVE AND LOAD 2000 WITH SP3 TO RUN MAX6 AND HOPFULLY IT WILL BE STABLE OTHERWISE I WILL STICK TO MAX5

On my Computer max runs quite well. There are some crashes but not many.

Also with editing a mesh I never had any problems.
What I have to say (and everybody will confirm this) NEVER USE BOOLEAN !!!

Bruth
23-07-2004, 03:16 AM
Why not use Boolean? I find boolean to be very handy, and don't know how I would do certain things without it so easily.

Andy_k-3DT
23-07-2004, 03:43 AM
as a C4D user I find this talk of crashes amusing

the other day I was writing a review of the software and checked back through my crash logs when it last fell over - it was last October when I tried to use a plugin designed for an earlier version :)

I use Max since V.2.It never crashes 4 me if I does'nt try to something foolish. Some graphics cards & also some plugins might make Max crash. But It's very stable.

a quick apology here guys - we are a bit late on the judging this week - mainly because I'm racing to meet a deadline - as sson as it's out of the way I'll get on the case - tomorrow evening (GMT) is the most likely

Max hasn't crashed on me since i upgraded to 6. Version 5.0 crashed once in a blue moon.

eodeo
24-07-2004, 08:35 PM
I used max since v 1.0. Maxes 1-3 never(as far as I remember) crashed. Max 4 crashed somewhat more than I'd like it to so I did most of my stuff in Max3. Than max5 came out. Now that was stable. If it crashed it was when I did some huge memory scenes on my 384Ram Machine.

Now Max 6 crashed a lot before SP1. Now its stable too.

max just crashed,
once every 4 hours roughly.

C4d didn't crash once in the year I used it

Here we go with the winners list for this week.

My usual round up and comments.......

Great entries, and wel done everyone....but why are some of you guys rushing? It's a great shame to see what sould have been superb models if only you'd used a little more time, these are speed modelling challenges with a time limit, so the best thing you can do is use the entire time limit to refine your model.

The choice of this subject was quite deliberate, all of you would need to post "close up" renders of an object which is almost organic in form, this meant that any use of Subdivision surfaces would have to be done very well to avoid facets showing in your render. One, particularly good model by Dymitr (tap 4 shot1), was let down by this.

Honorable mentions in no particular order have to go to.....

renderbunny for the bamboo taps, Dymitr as mentioned above, Ghosts for your entries, funkybunnies for your tap shoes - shame you ran out of time, glahes, Orkron and Honki for your efforts close runners up were idan, lovely clean lines and a nice design, Anduvo for the flintsones tap and cbaristo for his tap plant

Once again, we'll give two prizes

Traditional and creative

For the traditional prize we've selected Otacons entry,

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=215608

just a very good model and render of a traditional tap

the creative tap goes to H2O.

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=218117

superb modelling and a great idea

If the winners can contact me with details of which of the 3D Total CDs you would like we'll get them sent out to you

I felt the exact same way! I'm very happily waiting for mine too.
It will be the first textures that are any good that I've used.
