speed modelling challenge week 6
The "rules" are simple,
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.
2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.
3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc.
4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"
5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable
6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries
prize of a 3D Total texture CD to the best entrant. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email.
so, here we go, with this week's challenge
deadline - midnight GMT Wednesday 28th July
modelling time - 40 minutes
subject - wooden toy

great concept, I'm gonna have at least 20 entries in this one...I have a 2-year-old, so the number of wooden toys I have for her is the number of models I plan to make LoL.

being as the challenge is to model a wooden toy I'm guessing a sensible answer would be "no"
however, why not do a little research - google is your friend :)
or simply model a plastic one and put a wood texture on it

Hello this is my first post on this forum and my first ever speed challenge.
wheni was growing up my favorite thin gin the world was to play with my brother on the bunk beds. Jumping off of it playing tag on and under it. i had loads of fun with it. plus this speed model is probably going to be tweaked and added to the house im moddelling right now.
anyway to the stats
20 min modding bed
20 on matress as well as 3 redo's and still crud, but matress isn't focus, so ...
5 min texturing (obviously i suck)
about 10 sec render.

Besides, not saying that I like it does not mean I don't like it.

your car is great. nice model and nice rendering. the one thing I think you should fix is in your texture. this toy doesnt look like it was carved out of wood because the wood grain is not flowing all in one direction. I dont know 3dsmax but in maya we have projection texture which gives it that look of real wood grain.

Well I just want to say that I do work fast, I'm pretty extreme in this way, I think if you ask my workmates they would confirm this. Also I was going extra fast for the sake of it here too. For textures and stuff like lightiing I have a lot of assets since before so I didn't need to actually "make" any textures other than for the eyes.

Mille - i dont think what orkron said was directed at you.. you jus hit a nerve ^_-
smallpiece - bust some non textured pics.. your texturing is really awesome, as is the overall render.
I usually try to stay away from stuff like bumpmaps and realistic textures in these competitions since it's a modeling comp., and supposedly texturing and lighting dont play a part in the judging decisions. Texturing like what you've submitted can really add to the model, make it look like theres more geometry than there really is.
..i'd say theres a few questionable entries in every week's competition.. but since u cant proove either way. This week i'd say theres only 1 that i would deem questionable.. but i try to have an optimistic look on things.. instead of saying "theres no Freakin way!" i say "That guy must be really fast!" ^_^

I know what you mean Glahes, about textures adding to the geometry and therefore the whole picture. Firstly I'd like to thank you for saying my textures are that good. Guess i got lucky with the ones I used, as i was under the impression my texturing was pretty taime compared to some of you guys.....anyway heres a couple of clay images showing how simple they are.
...cheers...

come on guys, calm down, this is meant to be for fun :)
in Orkron's defence, he didn't actually call anybody an idiot, just saying that pot leaves were for idiots and I suspect you realised there was a chance of a response like this when you posted the original image. It wasn't big and it wasn't clever posting it in the first place.
As to the time comment, I must admit that sometimes we are a little suspicious of some of the entries, and if this is the case we drop the person a line asking how they did it in the time and so far, with one exception the answers supplied have been pretty convincing :)
Anyway, let's all calm down and get back to the fun side of things.

My 2nd "Wooden Toy"
3D Studio Max 5.1 (modelling, assembly and texturing)
Photoshop ME (.jpg compression)
Modelling time: about 30 mins (I know that seems like a long time for such a simple model... but I guess I wanted it to have a certain shape and I wasn't satisfied until it "looked" right)
Texture and Lighting time: a few hours... (Mostly tweaking and test renders... like many other people here, I feel that texturing is my weak point!)
Rendertime: about 2 minutes (default scanline render with skylight)

ishotharold - looks pretty kool, i remember tinker toys.. hehe.. good stuff.

heres mine in.. "clay" i guess.. no color or bump added. first image i posted had a procedural texture, by the way, no image maps.
Orkron

millie : As people have already said, I was not targeting anyone specifically.
I felt like throwing that out there so people would be less likely to abuse the "honor system"
I never went back and checked to see who I meant because I didn't mean anyone in
particular.
Also: You could spend 6 days on textures and it wouldn't bother me in the least,
aside from being jealous :-) This comp is about the model not the maps.
Which made me laugh in one of the other comps when andy mentioned that
the textures made some of the judging harder...So, despite sometimes turning
a very simple piece of geomotry into a very nice model, textures generally don't always
help.
GlahES: Thanks for coming to my defense, however I think i was trying to get
a rise from people...if only to make some people be more wary of posting bullsh*t posts. Love the truck btw.
potsmoking guy: You knew that it would offend some people cuz u posted a "pc" version...I don't remember marley ever saying he
had a fooseball table as a kid with pot leaves on it....
If you're offended, o well, I'm not politically correct
edit: anduvo Nice chess set...I was not targeting you. If you look at mine,
then yours...you'll see mine is very detailed (lots of small poly shaping)...yours
is (not an insult, seriously) a lot more basic. I believe you did that in the
time limit
P.S. I will not be making anyone's ego feel better after this post so please don't
ask me if "you's is the one I meant" because I'll tell you it was!
GlahES
25-07-2004, 10:44 PM
also about the texturing.. if u have a crappy model with good textures, it ususally end up crappy. unlike smallpiece who has a very well made model and great textures.
Smallpiece - in the textured one did u add bump maps as well? jw.
smallpiece
25-07-2004, 10:45 PM
..Cheers Glahes, they're all pretty simple cause i'm kinda paranoid about the time running out half way through, but they come out pretty well for what they are.
This next one took me a couple of attempts to get right, mainly cause i used splines which are not a favorite of mine.
model time: 36 mins
texture: 20mins
render: about 2 mins
P.S...impressed with everyones entries so far, theres some pretty slick looking toys about.(I was deprived as a kid, all I had was that damn woodpecker on a stick)
smallpiece
25-07-2004, 10:49 PM
I usually add a bump map to all my textures, varying the amount for each object. I find its an easier way to 'bring it all to life', so to speak.
So yeah, they've all got bump maps.

For someone who was "deprived" as a kid... you're coming up with some pretty nice models! I'm definately jealous... all I've come up with is a top and a stupid yo-yo!

Marty- you may have only done these simple objects, but thats what everyones doing. all wooden toys make people think of things they had years ago, which are things like yoyo's and spinners.
I think were all on the same wave length, keeping it simple.
Orkron- Cheers.., I think 'simple' is the key to this project, so thats what i'm working on..
keep up the good work fellas..
...oh, and heres my 'clay' version.

My 3rd "Wooden Toy"
3D Studio Max 5.1 (modelling, assembly and texturing)
Photoshop ME (.jpg compression)
Modelling time: 40 minutes (I definately would've liked more time on this scene... but it's not a scene modelling contest, it's a speed modelling contest so... at least the important parts were finished.)
Texture and Lighting time: a few hours... (just trying to make things look good... as usual)
Rendertime: almost 4 minutes (default scanline render with skylight) I'm starting to like this skylight thing... :)
Story: Frustrated because he has been outmatched by someone he feels is inferior to himself, our antagonist smacks the board and storms off in a "Jealous Rage". Some people just don't know how to have fun...
EDIT: I just noticed to pieces interpenatrating... so I fixed them. :D

...Well I think you're doing alright....creativity is only half of it. Most of the objects posted here are based on something that exhists, that alone gives you a good starting point. I guess the rest is how you interpret it.

Marty_McFly nice but also remember that if the pieces were made out of the same piece of wood as the board then you need to adjust the texture sizes on the pieces and make it bigger

There is a tutorial at 3dtotal.com that includes making grass, here (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/tutorials/zaheer/zaheer_basic.asp). Just scroll down and look for "Creating the Grass." There is also a very good tutorial at 3DCafe.com here (http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorials/max/grass/grass.asp).
