You can`t extend the number of mat slots.
However you can import other parts of your scene and the texture info will remain intact.
So for example...if you have a interior scene.....and all your mat slots are taken...and you need to model another chair with different textures. Then you can model that chair in a new scene...texture it..and export it.Then import it into your interior scene....and the textures will remain as when you exported it.....hope that makes scence....:D

the Mat-editor is quite a hansom tool - and when you get used to it, you wonīt miss. So it is possible to display all the Mats in a Scene at once, when importing a Mat (beneath the sample-slot-window, the left one :)) - this might fix your problem :D.... you should hit F1 and entere "Material Editor".... ;)

The material info is not contained only in the material editor. As long as the material is applied to an object in the scene you will still be able to retreive it and modify it.

Think of the material editor as a list of the ten (or however many) favourite toys in a toy box. Your parrents haven't thrown out the other toys, they're still in there, just not on your top ten list.

If you want to make a new material, just make it over top of one of the ones in the material editor. As long as you give it a new name you won't modify the old material. If you need the one you modified over top of, you can use "get material from scene".

Yeah... multi sub object is usefull...

And, once you are done with setting up a material, and it is aplied to the model, you can reset itīs slot in the material editor, and start creating new materials. The only think you have to be sure is to give different names.

and just in adition to this, after you've reset a material but left it in your scene you can select your object, hit get material >selected and drag the objects material back into the mat editor somewhere for editing.
