wow awsome, post more renders and a small tutorial for the render :p
eXe69
28-07-2004, 03:29 PM
the render was done in Maya's Mental Ray using a HDRI map there are pleny of tutorials around explaining procedure I'm sure you'll be able to find some good stuff just like I did, as far as the car beeing finished there are few details such as interior to be looked after. This is what I have so far.

Did you use blue prints on this??
The only reason i say this, is because in the first picture, the car looks alittle bit squased, i am not sure if it is the angle??
Apart from that it looks very very nice, how long has it taken you?
eXe69
28-07-2004, 05:58 PM
thank you, excelent suggestion, I'll have to double check my proportions to make sure it's not squashed. I haven't been able to find any blue prints on this car but porsches website has some awesome hi-res wallpapers. a perfect side (or so I tought) and front, the top I found in google. I will post a different angle soon

well i usualy create scratches by using a Grayscale-Metal bumpmap.
oh and five stars from me dude :D
great work

thank you blao... I'll begin texturing soon and will give it a try

You could try creating your own bitmap like this one and apply it as a bumpmap:
http://www.wavestone.de/threats/bremsscheibentextur.jpg
It is done with Photoshop, simply by applying an "add noise" filter on the blank background - choose a mid gray for its color. The second step is to apply a rotation blur filter on the grained background. thatīs it! Just play with the settings to achieve the best results....
hope you like it ;)
to the model: AWSOME!! Keep on rocking like this....

are the seats supposed to be that far back? normally your steering wheel is above your knees... maybe the steering wheel is to far forward. or maybe the car is supposed to be that way, just wondering

here's the largest render I have so far... will post larger when the ride is done
Still pretty good - Iīm just a little confused about the cowl - cuz it looks like detached and not fitting properly....

Great pics!
I love it.
Nice paint, nice lighting, nice model (though I agree with Wave's comment about the cowl...)
Can you give us some hints/tips for the set (lights/background/...)?

thnx guys ... now that you mentioned it I see it as well... will fix it soon and post photos.
as far as light setup goes it's pretty basic... the scent only has two directional lights which are only casting specular highlights, one for the rims the other for the body.
the entire light and shadows are coming from an HDRI dome which is above the car with one of the downloadable HDRI probes. (there are lots of online tutorials for that stuff but let me know if you have trouble finding anthing onthis topic I'll try to help)
for mental ray I used "Production" settings with "Final Gather" turned on at 512 the frame takes about 5 min to render on a P4 1gig ram 3Gig cpu 128MB Nvidia Video Card
for the car paint shader I really toned down the reflection to eliminate the visibility of the HDRI dome and give it that studio look.
hope this helps
thnx again for all the coments, and crits

1. delete the edges in problem areas
2. deleting floating verts will result in a straight edge from pont A to B
3. align anything that needs to be aligned
4. recut faces to maintain quads
5. cross your fingers and toes hoping it will work

thx ill try some of the stuff ouit
Tvaren
01-08-2004, 04:45 AM
Yeah, wow! I never really thought of eliminating the problem areas that way before. Usually I just chop em out and extrude another poly, which generally results in the same problem over and over until I just give up and start pushing vertices around. And it's so obvious, I'm ashamed I never thought of that. :o
This has to be among the nicest looking renders I've ever seen on this board. The only crit I have is that the Porsche logo looks like it's embossed just a little too much -- recommended cure would be either tone it down a little or just apply more antialiasing... great work overall!
*edit*: Oh and one more thing -- any chance of seeing an unsmoothed wire? :???:
eXe69
01-08-2004, 06:37 AM
glad to be any help... here's the low poly you requested

Thnx Steph and saxo_boy.
As of right now I don't have any of my models online. But I will work on my site once the car is done. I never tought about giving away my models but it sounds like a great idea. I used to use 3D Max and have quite a few models saved so I'll give them away including Homer Simpson (my personal hero)

Very impressive renders!
I have one comment though:
the tire-texture really needs work. It looks way too smooth and one-colored to 'feel like rubber'.

thnx man.
the paint shader I downloaded from
http://www.highend3d.com/files/dl.3d?group=mayashaders&file_loc=metallic_paint_V2-v2.0-.zip&file_id=780
and with some modification I got it to look like this
as far as the rims go that is just a basic blin shader
eccentricity 0.2
roll off 1.0
spec color : white
everything else default

Up to date I've spent around a 1.5 month. I've been doing modeling with max for a year and now maya for 6 months
Which do you prefer, 3dsmax or maya?
I hear alot of people start off with max and then when moving to maya will never look back!!!

that is true ... I wouldn't go back to max unless I had to but I do miss it sometimes, both have advantages and strengts it's just that you'll develop a certain workflow to make the best of whatever you're using curently and any change wouldn't be welcomed. I'm sure if I was using max for six months and had to go back to maya again I'd think twice about it.

hi, good stuff.
what is your light set up, are u using MR or default renderer.
are u using GI , hpoton mapping or FG?
please explain a bit about you rendering set up. and about the last car render, it looks like a miniature car next to that little wall.
eXe69
18-08-2004, 07:55 AM
you're right about the minature car ... it looks like that because I used a wrong lens so the prospective is all mesed up
as far as the setup goes
I used MR with 512 FG points... and an hdri dome, everything else I left at default.
