speed modelling challenge week 7

The "rules" are simple,

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.

2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.

3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc.

4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"

5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable

6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries

prize of a 3D Total texture CD to the best entrant. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email.

so, here we go, with this week's challenge

deadline - midnight GMT Wednesday 4th august 2004

modelling time - 40 minutes

subject - "Leonardo"

The brief - Produce an image related to or inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci

Slightly more open this week as the "wooden toy" proved very popular.

Let's see how this one goes :)

EDIT: Removed the extra renders and reduced the image size to fit the new rules. To Andy: If I'm one of the people "abusing the system" I apologize wholeheartedly... it was never my intention!

Hi....
This is my second attempt at getting inspired by the great Leonardo....

Well....The detail reproduces a four-ramp stairway system. Each ramp was independent from the other three and thereby proved very useful in dividing the ascending flow of people from the descending one. Such a stairway system proved very functional in a four-storey (military) tower with a square base.

For those who have not yet read this yet, now is the time!!!

1, a maximum of 2 posts per model, one clay and one textured. Any further repeats will result in all posts of that model being deleted.

2, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately

I'm sorry about this guys, but it's getting a little out of hand and some people are kind of abusing the system.

These rules take effect immediately so, if you've entered challenge 7 and are contravening either of them please remove the offending posts

First off, to the guy who did the Teenage Mutant Ninja tutrle, that was awesome and I couldn't help but laugh at that one.

So, here's my 2nd entry. Leonardo's file cutter and I tell you what, something that only took 35 mins to model crashed my comptuer at least 4 times, but hey, I got it done.

Modelling : Approx. 35 mins
Made in Maya and retouched in Photoshop 6.0

Everyone's doing great work, can't wait to see more.

Hi Guys!

Thanks everybody for your replies after my PEPSI-COKE tap, and congratulations to "H2O", your tap was really cool

SO, here I go again, this is my Leonardo 2004, I came up with the idea after a hard brainstorming. What do Leonardo invent if he was born in 90's? Maybe a microwave? a cell phone?... no, he would invent the iMac... (I also think that my brain is falling apart, but that's not the point) ;)

so, I hope you guys like it...

Church with eight multi-apse chapels(whatever that is) by Leonardo.
Modeling: 40 min(sharp)
Textures: 25 min(they are not as complex as they look)
Rendering and post: 50 min

Great work all so far!
ps- if anybody would like to know my little "trick" for the textures I would be happy to share;)

02-08-2004, 05:51 AM
Ok, before anybody asks I'll share anyway...I played around in Photoshop with some different things and tested to duplicate the image, add a chrome filter and overlayed the result on the base layer. The result was this wierd white webbing you see all over the church. I liked the result so much I just had to keep it.:)

Texturing 30mins - need to do more work on the textures (especially the frame) but I'm off on holiday in the morning so won't have time. Would've liked to have made more entries as this was a very interesting topic - and some great models too.

Here is my 2nd and final entry.....Sonicx and ghosts have raised the bar guys!!! I approached this differently, working out on paper beforehand how I would model the main building in 40 mins..it really helped..just extruded splines and -booleans for the windows and vaulted corridor...cylinders for the pillars and added a bit of noise to some parts..only about 4 or 5 models instanced many times.

I just read Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code', which is a marvelous novel, and I thought that this contest would be really nice to make an object from that book: the cryptex.
When I read about it I was already fascinated and I really wanted to design the thing in 3d.

The cryptex is an apparatus that is used for safely storing valuable information. It's a cilinder build up from rings which can be rotated. In only one setting/code it can be opened.

Here's my first WIP. The modelling is mostly done, same for the textures. Only the compositing and lighting has to be done.
I spent most of the time adjusting the textures:
Modelling time: ~30mins.
Texturing time: ~90mins.
Used software: 3dsmax 6, Photoshop.

This is my very first post on this forum.
I am learning 3Ds Max.

Just came to know about this speed-modelling challenge.....felt like giving it a shot. Never knew so much about Leo Da Vinci. This thread has been very educative for me.

Must say that there are many talented members on this forum......looking forward to learning from you ppl :)

Concept chosen: Automatic igniting device
Ref. image: http://www.museoscienza.org/english/leonardo/img/acciarino_automatico_d.jpg

Tool used: 3Ds Max 5.1
Modelling time: 40 mins (rushed it till the last second.......gasp!)
Texturing time: 15 mins approx.
Render time: 8 mins approx. (for the clay)
20 mins approx. (for the final)
(most of it was done with splines)

Here is the clay render

EDIT: Changed the materials and lighting to get this new textured render. Since the modelling was already done, I needed to work more on the materials.

I have deliberately taken off the lustre to give it an aged look.

Ok, here's my final :)
I've spent some more time on the lighting and compositing.

Used time:
Modelling: 40 minutes
Texturing: 2 hours
Composition & Lighting: 15 minutes

Used software: 3dsmax6, Photoshop for the textures.
Rendertime: 32 minutes for the final image.

Final. 1280x1024 (http://picserver.org/view_image.php/9P3PJ0H52728/picserver.jpeg)
additional images:
Detail. 1280x1024 (http://picserver.org/view_image.php/B19X1WC95GC3/picserver.jpeg)

For those who haven't seen my previous post and have no clue about what the cilinder thing is :
I just read Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code', which is a marvelous novel, and I thought that this contest would be really nice to make an object from that book: the cryptex.

I've learned a lot of this speedmodel contest. Mostly on hurrying with modelling and texturing/composition. I hope that you guys can give me some comments on my work. :)

------------------------------------------------------------
Time for my stuff now:

- 3Ds Max 5.0
- Brazil R/S 1.0
- Photoshop 7.0
- A bit CorelDRAW 9.0

- Modelling time of the compass (the most down one; those both objects are called 'compass', but only that down one is founded out by our dear Leonardo ;) ) = 37 minutes
- Scene modelling = about 45 minutes
- Texturing = about 3 hours
- Lighting = HDRI map, so just about 5 minutes
- Rendersetup (+ final texture adjustments) = about 1,5 houres
- Rendertime = 4 x 35 minutes (renders are combinated in Photoshop: all renders have a different Specular rate :) )

Now the final image under here! Hope you'll like it...!

@Carvin: how is the middle of the bar going to move (or rotate) when it is attached to the hull?
It won't be able to rotate like this I think....
Your model looks very nice though!

Now that I took a second look I think that I see the system. The paddles will slide forward when you're rotating the bar in the middle isn't it?

Hehe, this is a speed-challenge, and it takes you four days (and counting) to give the results...hmmm :p

No just kidding, take your time Andy, the beach and your family is more important than this of coarse ;)

four days to judge, have a life and of course do some work for the people that pay me :) - I had a pretty big article to write for Computer Arts which took a lot longer than I expected hence part of the delay, add into that the weather and a few other factors and I seem to have lost a week :)

We'll post the results within the next couple of hours

OK. the very belated results for the Leonardo challenge.

I know I say this every week but this week you really have all excelled yourselves, nearly every single model that entered was good enough to win which has made judging incredibly difficult.

First of all I'd like to thank the really honest ones amongst you who took slightly over the time limit yet had the decency to admit it - better luck next time hopefully you've learned enough to speed up your workflow slightly

Honorable mentions go to MartyMcfly for your superb war machines, nanko, welcome to the forums and a lovely model too, Idan your bridge was great as was yours aliased. Phil Craigie we liked both of your entries so you kind of get two honorable mentions. Dr Suess. Viper 0, travis jinx, mille, sonic X and monica (for your architectural models), Pjanssen (despite your nagging we really liked your crypto), in fact you very nearly ended up on the runners up list so well done and finally Orkron for his leo02 image

The concept/comedy images were great as well. Mr Glass, you were one of the few who didn't take up on leonardo Da Vinci - excellent render and good interpretation of the brief same to you wdekreij for your leonardo di Caprio image and to hrbmilk for your very disturbing portrait.

so, to the runners up, no prizes, just the satisfaction and that lovely warm feling that goes with it

Jorey

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=224696

absolutely brilliant and had some of the modelling been a little better (particularly the way the drawers fit) you would have won

The Bully

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=225167

a great model and an even better render which was totally in the DaVinci style - Sketch and Toon is a powerful piuece of software and it's nice to see somebeody using it as well as this

Webwolf

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=224521

another great image and so close to winning

Finally then, the 2 winners.

Ghosts you submitted so many great models this week it's hard to pick just one, any of them were good enough to win but in the end we went for the helicopter on page 7

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=224561

Much the same can be said about our other winner , a whole raft of super quality models that were virtually impossible to seperate. So CutCopyPaste, well done. We thought that the modelling in this one was superb, accurate and intricate. As we've said before it doesn't need to be textured or finished to enter - at least it doesn't when it's this good

http://forums.3dtotal.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=226045.

Well done folks, this really was the hardest of all the challenges so far to judge. The standards were exceptional. Let's keep it up and make our lives harder every week :)

If the 2 winners drop me a line telling me which of the Texture CDs you would like I'll arrange shipping for you

By the way, my dictionary translates the word 'nagging' as 'continuously complaining'.... Might I ask for some explaination about that ? :p
Thanks for your comments :)

@nappa: I think, you could have used a different texture - this texture makes the model look - i don't know... - dirty or something.
And the lighting. You could have used another light to lighten the sides that show towards the camera so we get a better look at the model.
And the model itself: Your ship looks like it has been cut out of a single piece of wood. You should have used more objects for e.g. the planks. I know there was a tight time constraint but maybe you would have been faster with using more pieces for each part of the boat.

well said webwolf,

Nappa, a rule of thumb is that when you are entering a modelling contest submit a render that actually shows your model :)

DAM-NOT WINNING YET!
ATLEAST HAVE TWO ONARIBLE MENTIONS SO FAR.

CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS AND EVERY-ONE ELSE THAT ENTERED
ALL THE MODELS WERE GREAT.

Andy_k-3DT
10-08-2004, 09:18 PM
yes I know there was a clay/wire submitted, but as Webwolf said the hull of the boat was too smooth. Take a look at a few of the other boats that were entered and compare them to yours.

Yours wasn't a bad model, it just that in this particular case we felt it wasn't up to the standards of the ones we singled out for mentions or prizes.

Nappa,

that's enough now thank you.....

You asked how your model could have been better and you have received constructive critiques from more than one person.

Now is the time for you to move on and look at your work compared to the others and see for yourself how you could improve.

If you have any further questions please feel free to drop me a PM but don't expect any more "why didn't I win" type questions to be answered in this thread
