I remember this one from a while back. Turned out to be a fake, someone just made it up there was no research. There are also plenty of words that become unreadable when you scramble the letters between the first and last so its not a very robust rule.

Fun though :)

well basically it is true but the vocals should stay in their positions inside the scrambled word, its because our brain while reading is primary check frist the positions of the vocals and if it is a known word...voilà... only if its a not knows word that you read for the first time then your brain checks every letter after eachother and "saves" the positions of the vocals.

i just happen to remember this because i made after i first read about this an experiment in school with the whole biology-class to prove this theory, but it only works if: the word has the same length and the vocals stay in their original position.

It is actually really simple: the reason why it works is that we see the shape of words, not the individual components. in german this is called Wortbild. directly translated that would be "wordpicture".

hey this thread is good practice for those word scrambles in the back of the newspapers :D (well canadian newspaper, dont know how it is in other countries)
