View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr3!!!!!

Michael

So let 'er rrrrip!

Today the challenge is to design a street from 2857 year. I want you to let your imagination flow here, it can be ANYTHING... it can be "ordinary" vertical city with lots of hovercrafts, it can be streets covered with ice, cause another ice age has come ;).... it can be a street totally devastated from a nuclear blast, filled with strange monsters... it can be a nice, quiet suburb street that has a sign - GREEN ALIENS ONLY covered with red spray paint, on which green aliens live their happy life far away from their home planet, where they were cast away from... It can a street on a space station, it can be street on a mothership... It can be street INSIDE the giant tree, totally mechanized...

These are just ideas from a top of my head... you can come up with your own idea. :D Top of my head... you dont want me to go that road again, lads... My shrink told me, that I shouldn't NEVER go taht road again... :D :P   :ufo:

GO!!!

Deadline as usual - 12:00 GMT + 00:00 next sunday, that is 15th August.... man the time flies... :(

TheOne

Just started the concept, but the deadline seems a bit tight for me, for an environment project. :( There is waaaay too much cool stuff you can do...

Michael
08-08-2004, 06:48 PM
Here, as the topic is more demanding and need for details is great, you can take your time with it. :) Three days is too much, though... :) :D ;)

TheOne

JUST speedpainting??? :(

Michael
08-08-2004, 07:43 PM
OK, consider the name as .... official, but take your time :). not JUST speedpainting.

Corky13
08-08-2004, 08:02 PM
I just say "Daily Sketch Group at Conceptart.org" :D they dont care if you make your pic in 10mins or 5 hours...but it have to be done in ONE day..so i thing we could call this Challenges "Weekly Paint Group" and all have to be done in one week..couldnt we ?

TheOne
08-08-2004, 09:16 PM
Yeah, would be ok I think. :)

10h is pretty fast for a painting. if you check out the 2d painting tutorials on 3dtotal you'll see some tutorials on paintings that took 30h and more.

Vego
08-08-2004, 11:31 PM
Michael I love 2d painting challenges idea (btw I am Michael too :D ). But my 2d skill sux, so i won't post any image :( . But I think that if you add some info about your challenges on 3D Total main page they could be much more popular. It's just a little sugestion.

P.S Forgive me my any English mistakes.:o

P.S I will try to use 3D Total painting tutorials to incrase my painting level, so maybe next time I will join.

Cool topic, even though I haven't designed a single enviroment in my whole life. Speedpainting challenges IS learning, right?! :D

Yep, I think this thing should be done in one single day. 3 days is too much, even if it means 15 minutes every day. Learning to paint a *good* image without taking brakes to freshen the eyes is the thing speedpainting teaches and it's one of the greatest skills to have. We fight 'painting blindness' here. ;)

Vego --> Man, don't hesitate to post your picture here! No matter what your skill level is, entering the challenge will be way healthier for your skills than reading 10+ tutorials. You'll get some suggestions, tips, crits here to help you improve. besides, this is simply for the fun. :)
It's not wether you win, it's wether you participate!

Anxious to see the entries. :D

Michael

Vego - we all here to learn, no matter how our skills are. Please, don't be affraid to post your work here.

Speedpainting it's mainly about impression. It teaches to paint the impession that is in your head onto the medium, to catch a mood, general idea, lighting. The environments are very tricky, they are more complicated than characters. And more time consuming in my point of view. Still - every artist should learn how to sketch good ( I loove art by Craig Mullins, he's great in sketching ) and fast, that's why it's SPEED in the title. But I won't disqualify a person, that spent 3 days on the work. That person should push itself to work quicker, though. That's what this challenges are about. And what Insect wrote, of course :) :D

The most important thing is... HAVE FUN! :D

EDIT - right now the challenges are about speed, BUT I plan to do a couple of challenges that you can work thru whole the week. So for now - please push yourself to work as fast as you can.it really helps and is vital.

Thats true..it seems that everybody have to get faster and faster if they want to survive in the Concept-Art business :(....hmmm

TheOne

Yeah, well... :dunno:
That's the way the world goes; everything gets faster... but I dont bother... :)

David, Cool, first entry:D !! remind me a Day after tomorrow.

man, I really love speedpaint, it just that theres a thing can be learn so much in this type of painting. and doing a speed paint daily will gain much a paint skill than doing many tutorial. ( I have to agree with you, insect:D )

keep 'm come, all!!!:D :D

Nice one, David. I really like the mood and atmosphere. I would add more buildings to it. :) Good one :D

David Ciprian

Thanks

I would have added more buildings too, only if they were easy to made/paint :D

TheOne

Non cg is all right, as well, I reckon. :)

The first entry is great David! The second needs a bit more work, in my opinion. :)

David Ciprian
09-08-2004, 06:01 PM
well, I wanted it to look like a sketch or a concept...I'll do better with the next one (if there is time for the next one)

TheOne
09-08-2004, 06:50 PM
If you want it to look like a concept try to show outlines and guides. Than block rough shadows. For concept a non-opacity based brush works better. :)

David Ciprian
09-08-2004, 07:57 PM
I'll try that in the future

Cool!!! VP-View? Ok, i'll think about it next time. With what programs do you make 2ds? I love Painter and Photoshop.

TheOne
10-08-2004, 09:52 PM
I usually block the main colors with Photoshop and then paint the details with painter. (Digital Airbrush + Just add water works great!)

Yea, Try Vanishing Point P. It can add a lot of realism.

Michael

3dmaxler - yeah, it would use a Vp perspective here. It doesn't show us much of a city street. Try to change a point of view here :)

TheOne - WOW, what an improvement! Great job! Look realy like a marker job. Now try to come up with the whole street view :)

TheOne
11-08-2004, 03:04 AM
Can't you count that as a complete street? :p
I am still learning, so I stick to simple things... I almost never finish big projects, if they don't turn out how I want.

Thanks anyway!

Scroll
11-08-2004, 03:22 AM
Well I just drew this up in a couple of hours, going to paint it now

TheOne
11-08-2004, 03:52 AM
Looks good so far. but a couple of hours seems pretty long!
Also, there are some flaws in the perspetive, don't worry tho, the perspective in my drawings isnt flawless as well.

Nice work anyway, can't wait to see it finished. :)

And I hope you don't mind that I am always pointy. :D

Scroll
11-08-2004, 06:33 AM
my perceptive wrong? all inclined planes go off to false viewpoints.. I drew this from a ground plan so there arent any colision of space, could you be more specfic please?

TheOne
11-08-2004, 02:40 PM
I really don't want to bother you being pointy. :blah:

But here you go:

1: The two lower curves seem a bit out of perspective. The top curve is good.

2: This area looks strange. I think the roof should be rounded off a bit more.

3. If line b doesn't vanish to the right vpoint then line a can't vanish to the left vpoint, unless your building doesn't have 90° angles.

That's all. It's really good tho! :)

TheOne
11-08-2004, 02:43 PM
Just as always.

3dsmaxler
11-08-2004, 02:54 PM
Yeah. I can't wait too. I would draw some Hovercrafts or something else onto the streets, cause it would look a little bit empty.
So i ll wait......

3dsmaxler

Scroll
11-08-2004, 03:30 PM
actaully line B is actaully inclined, unforently I drew the base to the same false VP and the builing looks on a different angle, hah I marked to many points on my board and kept not looking where they were getting marked ha

I have no Idea whats wrong with number 3 there

TheOne
11-08-2004, 03:35 PM
Accidentaly I did the numbers the wrong way. 3 is supposed to b1 and wise versa.

ROB
11-08-2004, 08:53 PM
Hey One I like your bridge.
And Scroll, Lookin' forward to seeing your finished piece.

I've put up my work in progress, it's kinda bare and I do know there are one or two flaws.

Time so far: 40mins
Package used: Photoshop

TheOne
11-08-2004, 09:09 PM
Wow nice! There are some buildings that are a bit lopsided. Very good work tho! Will you color it using the cell shading method or will you paint it? :)

ROB
11-08-2004, 09:18 PM
Probably keep with the cel shading, keep it simple!

TheOne
11-08-2004, 09:29 PM
Yep, right. :) Can't wait to see it finsihed. :)

12-08-2004, 12:52 AM

Howdy, nice idea, this speed-paintin'
I decided to give it a go, I know it isn't very good...
but I am also a horrible painter :p hopefully you can
recognize it

a street of the future in an 80's animated series, yes,
it is Cybertron (or supposed to be anyway), with...uh....
teenage mutant ... ninja turtles....

3 hours all in all

I thought maybe if I used watercolor PENCILS,
then maybe it would look better, but alas...it did not lol

the rest done in MS Paint and ...uh...freaking Paintshop Pro 7...

ok, well anyway, here's my noobish entry :D

Can't wait to see some of these :)
good luck, all

ROB
12-08-2004, 02:29 PM
I got to work on the shadows lastnight.
Next up is some detail!
Time so far: 1h 40min

TheOne
12-08-2004, 03:30 PM
@ Funky Bunnies: Nice, but dont mess you paintings up with paint.

@ ROB: Nice indeed! Can't believe thats all PSP.
Very good, keep it going!

Argalius
12-08-2004, 05:56 PM
ROB, looks really nice, how did you make those shadows, did you all paint them by hand?

TheOne
12-08-2004, 06:11 PM
Seems so. For vector forms they arent exact enough. They look good tho!

ROB
12-08-2004, 06:18 PM
Yes Argalius the shadows were done by hand. They took me a while to do, but having a graphics tablet helps. Once I decided where the light was coming from made it easier to place the shadows, although that came after I drew about a third of the shadows! :dunno:

3dway
12-08-2004, 08:24 PM
It bears a striking resemblance to greeble, toon shader, direct target light.

ROB
12-08-2004, 09:01 PM
I would agree myself because greeble was used as a reference point, but thats as far as it goes, no lights were involved.

Anyways, did some block colouring, started detail on the buildings and added some fog.

Time so far: 2h 40min

ROB
12-08-2004, 09:02 PM
oops, forgot the pic!

3dsmaxler
13-08-2004, 12:58 AM
Looks good. But don't overdo it. Just a bit color and that's it. But already a great work. Simple, digital, futuristic.

keep it up
3ds.....

ROB
13-08-2004, 06:09 PM
ok, I think I might be done now!

Total time: 5h 10mins

Michael
13-08-2004, 09:50 PM
ROB - hmm... looks good.... I would also consider colouring it... adding some lights to windows - even if they are really tiny... But yeah - it could be easily overdone, since the distance to the city is great... maybe some hovercrafts?

I'm just thinking here, you don't have to apply any of my ideas, these are just ideas. ;)

3dsmaxler
14-08-2004, 12:57 AM

It's noobie stuff, but this is what I came up with after 50 minutes of messing around with photoshop 7.
