View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr 4!!!

This week it's all about concepting.
The most sought-out skill for a 2d artist is concepting, it's the most important thing in developing, whether it's game or anything else bind to visual media. The rule is - if it doesn't look good on paper, than it won't look good 3d or in the movie, etc. So we're gonna make that this week.
Now I'm gonna give you a description of a character, that you will attempt to concept.
Name: Knar'zak Grunkhrzt
Age: 378 ( the race average dying age is 400, so he's quite old )
Occupation: vehicle mechanic/warrior
Personality: very calm, self-assured, not agressive, great sense of humour, happy.
Heath condition : the race is generally very healthly, and he's in better shape than most of the other Krnazkutgz's. But keep in mind, that he's old - so the skin is really wrinkled.
In this challenge you will need to CREATE the image of the character AND his props/weapons - SO TWO PAGES - ONE FOR THE CHARACTER, SECOND ONE FOR THE PROPS. UNLESS YOU CAN FIT IT ALL INTO ONE PAGE, BUT IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DO IT ON TWO PAGES.
You can also add some poses, fighting poses or whatever comes to your mind.
LET YOUR IMAGINATION GO WILD ON THIS, BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN!!!
Deadline as usually - Sunday the next week - 29th.
GO!

:) new challenge! hey, Michael, I have a suggestion here (hopefully to get more participant for this speed paint challenge), how about a prize for the winner? (like the one at speed modelling thread, maybe an award or texture cd?).
The topic for the 4th challenge quite tough and of course...valuable for learning. would be nice to see some entries later:).
interesting :)...but is it ok to draw it anime style or should it be something ...more realistic??
Michael
23-08-2004, 01:01 AM
Androgs - Oh my dear, sweet God.... I thought you already mailed Tom that you won and you already picked you Texture CD!! Go and write him! OF course, that every winner of this comp WINS a Texture CD... for now we can afford nothing else... maybe in the future, though... :)
Mia - the style is totally free, you can make it manga style, if you wish. :)

:o ahh, Ok..ok, shame on me, I didn't know that:p . Thanks for the explanation:D .I just mail to him now. ( finally get a texture cd!!!!!):D :D
Hey Michael,
Could you tell me where you got the quote from
"and as the sign on the Alamo Dome says - you are ALL winners. "
Its been bugging me all weekend!
Cheers

Great topic Michael!
Why is it bugging you ROB?
Cause TheOne, the quote is familiar and I just cant place where it is from.
I cant wait to see some of those character concepts, Its always nice different views on a character profile. I'm especially looking forward to seeing Mia's Anime style of work, I love japanimation!
Well best of luck everyone!

:) Here you go.
My character, NO.3. :) Body, weapons and a vehicle will follow soon.
Hope you like him. :)
Michael-3DT : where did you get that character? :) ....its really challenging ...making him really old ((22 years and he will be dead:xx:))...and yet he is soppose to be healthy :???: ....a worrior ((the skin should be streatched))but no he is old ((lots of wrinkled skin)).... im going:crazy: LOL
ROB :thanx i hope you dont get dispointed :)...i try and do my best
TheOne: your character looks good ....but i think you need to work more on the wrinkled skin ((the skin srrounding the eye and the mouth)) and the nose there is something wrong with it but i just dont know what it is :)
TheOne
23-08-2004, 08:33 PM
Thanks! But... it's not a human... so his skin dont have to be that wrinkled like at a human. :)
LOL i know((its definitly not a human)) :)... but still he is REALLY OLD ... and when i said work more on the wrinkled skin i meant the shading as well coz they look more like a guide-lines :)
TheOne
23-08-2004, 10:15 PM
You have to be pretty good, eh?
you might be right. But it is only a concept. It's hard to do a whole character and the props in less than one week. So I will keep it simple.
Michael
23-08-2004, 11:00 PM
Mia - think - old kung fu movies. Look at the old monks and champions there. The old man can be in a veery good shape, yet his skin can be wrinkled, to accent the age, his hair can be white, the eyebrows can be 20 cm long... The muscles can be thin and small, but with a good definition, covered with wrinkled skin and veins... The health can be shown with a stance - he can stand firmly on his legs or hold the weapon really firmly. Or the way he holds his head up... I see him with the smile on his wrinkled face, like Bhudda's smile. But you can come up with your own idea on how to show it.
Look a Yoda in SW Episode 2 - he's old, has a small hump, yet he's deadly fast and agile. I was thinking about something like that.
I was just picturing myself a calm, happy, old kung fu master. And I completely made him up. Sorry, if it caused problems with interpretation. I hope it's more clear what I was picturing. It's a loose description, you can change some things to what you find best, if it causes you problems...
The One - you don't have to paint ten props and a vehicle. Just concentrate on two weapons and a clothing. ;)
Rob - it's from "Miss Congeniality" ;).

20 minutes, very sketchy ;)
Michael
24-08-2004, 01:33 AM
LOL :D
Michael-3DT LOL thats exactly what i thought about :)....and i really like that character you know i never drew an old character not a male nor female so it was really challenging looking for some pic of an old men and trying to draw 1 here ...well i ended up with 2 characters here is one he is kindda old and i donno... do you think i over do it with the skin ?? :p

Haha! Great charracter mia! :)
Here is mine... I worked on the wrinkles a bit more... I hope they are better now... still the perspective is a bit weird... thats cos i didnt use guides... well it gives an unique look to his face. :D
http://takuan.de/drawings/no3finished.jpg
still you need to work with the nose i drew aline i think you should place the ....thing on the head on the line to make it better and the nose well....i drew it somehow (( using a mouse so dont laugh at it :P)) but you r really good with the shades ...i cant wait to see the final image :)

Despistado - try to make him less human like... :)
The One - really good eyes. Mia is right about the shape of the face - it looks like he was hit really hard and the face collapsed into the skull ;) :P
Mia - really nice start. Make full pose of his... and maybe less human like?
TheOne :) lol sorry :)... whats important is that the pic is here and you can see what i mean
DESPISTADO thanx and you know its my first time to be here ((new member...))... your character is really nice (( but he looks like a jurk...dont ask me why :grr: ))lol j/k...and those are really nice wepons.. good luck :)
Michael-3DT im did on the other character that is :)....but i wont send him untill friday :D ... but i will send the pics of this character untill that day ......umm by the way is it ok to do 2 characters instead of 1???
TheOne
24-08-2004, 06:59 PM
Thanks mia! I changed everything a bit.
It's still not perfect but unless I want to erase big parts I cant change some things.
I hope you like it anyway, it's finished now. Next, I will do the body! :)
see the nose look much better now :).... by the way you can use a transperent paper to re draw the pic and make the changes you want instead of erasing some parts ((i use this method sometimes :D))

Trkls - nice one. :) looks a bit abstract, a bit rough, but I like it. You could add some more details to it - like more definition to the face etc... :)
TheOne - looks much better now :)
DESPISTADO - I see some colouring over here :D. Cool. The background is a bit strange :P but it's still cool.
Ahhh good good.
Well here's my contribution so far, I'm not getting much time to work on this one this week.
PhantomOokami
26-08-2004, 12:35 AM
Anyone notice they're all starting to look the same? XD
TheOne
26-08-2004, 12:45 AM
All the same? nah. They're all old, that's right, but they dont look the same... :)
Although one could be more creative. :D
i think PhantomOokami is right and thats bcoz they r all look like old humans ((exept for you (the one):)))....ooh well i finished the character clothes ....what do you think:) ((the pose look stupid... i nowthat  ))
TheOne
26-08-2004, 02:40 AM
:o thanks! :)
He looks very good. Nice details, and all. Would you mind scanning a bigger one, so that we could see more of the details?
umm details...:) ....ok just b4 i do this i want you to know that im not really good with details (( thats why i made this tiny image :D)) it made it look good ....alittle ;) ...but dont worry i'll send thelarg one....with the final image :D ...is that ok?
TheOne
26-08-2004, 03:20 AM
Sure! And don't be afraid! :) I'm not good at details either. :halo:

here is an update.
PhantomOokami
26-08-2004, 11:56 AM
Its not just that but they seem to look very similar. Where the placement of the horns are and such.
I think the reason behind the characters looking the same is because of the description.
1) the character has to be looking old
- therefore lots of wrinkles
2)the character is in better shape than most of the others
- therefore not fat!
3)calm, self assured, non-aggressive, happy
Most of these points lead us to a common image of a happy go lucky skinny old man i.e. Kung fu master
because of the portrayal of such characters on TV and in the Movies:!!!:
If you look at Star Wars or Star Trek there are only a hand full of characters that are non humanoid. Its mainly because that’s all we know is the human shape then the remainder of the characters are based on insects. We use and mix and match what is around us and what inspires us.
So when we get a description of what the character should be. Most of us work on the first character that pops into our head, rather than working out a few designs and picking out a more original design.
what also contributes to the design of the character is what has not been said by the description e.g. the second point I gave, "the character is in better shape than most of the others" this implies that the character is not fat and very healthy for his race.
So if we add all these things together, I think this is a reason why some of our characters look the same.
Maybe I'm just rambling now but if we are aware of what shapes our ideas maybe we can start thinking outside the box we've put ourselves in! (Me included ;) )

Aedilhum is here! :hurt:
Good work anyway!
PhantomOokami
26-08-2004, 07:32 PM
;) but no one said that being fat was unhealthy in his race.
But its not the kungfu thing I'm seeing here..
wo0ow its really awsome Aedilhum :).... i made this new face (( dont ask me what that thing is coz i dont know :S )) .... does he look like a human??
http://www.geocities.com/celestial_emptiness/old-monster-face.html
and ((the one)) dont ask for a large image of it ok;)
p.s here is the image of his clothes....:)

Androgs
27-08-2004, 02:22 PM
and the props, the above one is a props that he usually got at his hand and the below one is the energy tube that you see on his back.
hope you all like it and hope to see some other entries .:)
Good luck all!!!
Here's my effort.
I went for more of the mechanic side for the development of the character, Many hands make light work!
His main weapon is the staff, good for poking and doubles up as a wrench.
Also there is an assortment of tools in his handy tool belt.
Unfortunately I'm not going to get around to doing a weapons sheet, got too much going on this weekend!
misterD
27-08-2004, 07:18 PM
Hi all
heres my first draft, done in pencil then scanned, will colour up face over weekend. He has a pickup truck that runs on an antigrav drive and more props to follow which will be on two pages.
Weapons also to follow...

28-08-2004, 08:45 AM
And here's mine. I sketched the concepts on my way to class, with pencil and copy paper. I would have scanned it in, but... [long story omitted] I ended up using Photoshop instead. I used a basic brush, size 5 (third one done in the big list, as is), and a Wacom tablet.:) For me it's very similar to pencil.
I will color this in as I have time, and I will scan in the concepts sometime.
edit: oh, and about everyone's drawings still looking human... it just seems natural to draw a human body, usually standing, no matter what head is drawn first
LittleFish
28-08-2004, 08:50 AM
...and the tools.
The hammer/ax combo tool is the only one yet; he will get a more fitting tool later. This one is for the basic construction/repairs of wooden boats, but he doesn't have his tools yet for the motors. The sword is his battle choice, otherwise, he just carries his spear, and throws it head down in the ground while he's working.
Almost forgot the times:
The sword was done first... about 1 hour
Then the hammer... about 10 min
Then the man... about 1 - 1.5 hr
(I drew the man first in my concepts, but I wanted to get a feel again for PS before I tried something a little more complex.)

Well here is stage 2... Had no time this week, was coming from work @ 9 pm.
Some very nice works here, I think this challenge is getting more and more popular
I deicided to go with more realistic look, "in a galaxy far far away" :D tools and weapons tk. hopefully :D
Michael
29-08-2004, 01:17 AM
WOW, guys. You really like the subject! That makes me so happy :D... I thought it would be not so popular, but look at all the entries!
TRKLS - That's starting to take on some shape, hurry up to make it before the deadline it looks good!!
LittleFish - it's nice, but try to capture more details.
Mia - great entry, detailed work. Good face.
Aedilhum - great work. Good colouring, looks like pale dead to me :). Good weapons. The hands seem to be a bit off... something wrong with the perspective there, I think... But great entry nevertheless. :)
MisterD - nice entry, too much of a human in my taste though.... :) he was meant to be almost 400 years old. He looks like pretty normal old guy around 60. :) Don't get discouraged though, it's pretty good :D.
ROB - great concept about the four hands :D. It would use a bit of definition in linework and some conctrasts, but nice :)
Androgs - great entry, I really like it :D
One more day - still some entries can arrive. :D
LittleFish
29-08-2004, 04:45 AM
Michael -- you mean in the skin, with muscle definition and wrinkles/skin folds?
edit: what specific parts of my drawings?
are the weapons detailed enough?
does the face/arms/feet/loincloth/etc. need more detail? specifically what.
Michael
29-08-2004, 01:04 PM
LittleFish - yeah, I meant more definiton to the face and muscles. I don't thik you'll have time to make another pose, so maybe just tweak the face and muscles a bit... I loove the chest - saggy, hanging old man's chest :D
LittleFish
29-08-2004, 01:08 PM
yeah, my dad's almost 62.
okay, I'll see what I can do on the face, and I'll probably have to redraw the arm a little wider so it can have finer definition.
can't wait to see everyone's finished work. best painting comp yet (for me).

I hoped you'd post that 3 hours later. I've just started painting. :D Oh well, I missed another one...
Very cool entries everyone! Very simmilar in quality aswell, hard to choose. :)
1. Aedilhum - the rendering of the head is superb, though the body asks for more work.
2. Androgs - nice and clean style, cool cartoony design. :)
3. Theone - I can see lots of work put into that. Though next time concentrate on the whole more than the details.
See ya at the next one everyone! (This time I mean it. )

no, I'm not worried I couldn't finish; i just didn't have time. oh well, what are you going to do. (I'll post it up on this thread and/or in my sketch thread when modified.)
too human... but it's a shame that we only relate to the human emotions.
1. Aedilhum. good skin on the arms and the neck. He looks like an old mechanic. Too human? maybe. I haven't figured that out yet.
2. Androgs. Nice bright colors. Simple, wrinkles, and less human.
3. Mia. Good detail. Most helpful to modelers I think.
(I might have nominated LittleFish, but it had no color, and therefore no atmosphere to the composition, save for the grass and the rock at the bottom.)

Ok, here's my votes :).
1. mia, good detailed design:), has a bold manga style on it.
2. Aedilhum, cool portrait, you have a serious skill in painting, man:D.
3. TheOne, keep it up, mate. you're doing good this time:).
Happy voting and see ya in next challenge :D!!
My Votes are:

I don't want to sound rude but no one said anything about my entry. I don't care if you vote or not but it was kinda ignored... probably because its on the first page.
PhantomOokami,
your sketch is good. it gets the idea of the character across, but it would have been better if we could have seen the whole character, cause he's got no legs!
Nice colouring though!
misterD
31-08-2004, 03:06 PM
heres my top 3:
Mia: V nice work. details...v fine...face looked gentle and intriguing
Androgs: resolved concept what can I say, also recognisable style.
Rob: Liked his silhouette and ears. With a little work could see him in a game
. as a footnote on my own entry, didnt finish him. well cos he looked to young although I was pleased with his vehicle which i will probably use for something in the future.
as my old art teacher said; shelve your first idea till you've sussed your second, well i didnt do that and hence i think it came across in the concept.
Still i am not gonna be too self critical just move on to the next and explore more avenues before commiting to an idea.
And I have now got senior citizen ref for any future characters who are in need of shop mobility.
